Humiliated and heartbroken, she disappears from his life... and from the world.

Chapter 1 THE BEGINNING

Angie's POV

The beeping of the hospital monitors was steady, like a rhythm. It was an awful reminder that time was slipping through my damn fingers with every passing second. As I sat in the corner of my dad's hospital room, my hands wrapped around myself as I tried to hold the remaining part of me from falling apart.

I watched as my father laid still on the bed, pale and white as a ghost. He was the man who once lifted me up to his shoulders when I was little. He was full of life.

Now, he has his worst cancer, stage three. For some reason I couldn't say the word out loud.

As I drifted far into my thoughts, my phone buzzed beside me, again. I picked it up to see mail for a reminder of the payment of the hospital bill. Also, another reminder of the rent we owed for six months.

I did not bother to open the message to see the details. I already knew what it said. If we don't make payment soon, the hospital will stop the treatment, and we could also get thrown out of the house.

My hands shook as I put the phone down beside me.

I had no one to help me. My mum was working a double shift in a diner and her salary was only enough to get us what to eat and take care of my little sister, Lily, who was seventeen, trying to juggle school and her little work.

We were all spinning and trying not to drown.

"Miss Hart?"

I was startled by the voice. I looked up to see a man with a sleek and expensive suit. He stood by the doorway. For some odd reason, he looked out of place in the run-down hospital corridor. He looked like he had walked out straight from a magazine shoot.

He kind of looked familiar. Where have I seen that face? That's when it hit me.........

"Mr. Julius Cole?" I blinked hard, trying to snap myself out of my hallucinations, but the more I blinked, the more real he became, "Don't you work for.... Mr. Vale....."

He gave me a faint smile, "May I speak with you? Privately?"

I slowly realized that he was talking to me. I slowly rose to my feet, brushing the dust off my feet as I walked up to him, "Hmm, is everything okay at work?" I was beginning to panic. Why was my boss's assistant here in the hospital? This was not a good time to lose my job.

"Hmm, that's not related. I need five minutes of your time."

I glanced at my father. I gave a slight nod, "sure"

We stepped into the hallway and Julius led me to a private room at the end of the corridor. I had only seen it once, and it was kept for the VIPs. He closed the door behind us and turned to face me.

"Sorry about this, I understand this is unexpected" he began. "There is an urgent matter and it kind of involves you.....and Mr. Vale"

I frowned at what he said, "Mr. Vale doesn't even speak to me, or doesn't even know I exist. So why does this involve me?"

He studied me for a while, "because you are the only one in the position to help me right now, and he is willing to compensate you generously for your assistance to him."

I blinked, eyes widened by what I heard. "What kind of assistance?"

He hesitated for a while. "I rather he explained this himself. Can you meet him this evening? " Can you come to Vale Tower by, let's say, 8:00 pm?"

I stood there in shock, "I don't understand......"

" Elena, I promise you, this is a changing opportunity. " I would advise you to hear him out. He lowered his voice. "He knows about your......situation and is willing to help you out."

My heart dropped to my stomach, "How?"

Julius did not answer. He placed a beautiful card into my hands with an address written on it, "Come tonight, 8:00pm"

He turned and walked out of the room, leaving me stunned.

*****************************

The sun had already set when I stood in front of a private elevator to the Vale Tower penthouse. I had gone home to change and wore the best skirt and blouse I owned. I wore them on the day of my interview at Vale's Industries, two years ago.

Once again, I felt small, out of place. Everything looked so fancy and expensive. Even the air smelled expensive.

When the elevator door slid open, I stepped into a world I had only imagined in my dreams.

The penthouse was nothing short of breathtaking. Its sleek lines, the black marble floor, the gold decors, the floor to ceiling windows, the fucking view. The penthouse gave out a cold, airy vibe, like no one had ever lived here before.

That's when I saw him-Damien Vale.

He stood by the window with his back turned, he had a glass of scotch in his hands and he did not turn til I was halfway into the penthouse.

"Angie Hart," he called my name, and I shivered, as his eyes assessed me, "sit."

I looked around, and I slowly sat down on a leather couch that cost three times my salary. He walked past me and sat at the little coffee table. He dropped his drink down as he cleared his throat to begin.

"I will be direct and quick. I need to be married within this month. It is the most I do, if I want my life's work to go to me. If I am not married by the end of this month, I will lose everything to my cousin,"

I paused, "o...ka...y..."

He didn't pause as he continued to say, "I need someone who is discreet, someone I can trust not to betray me. I looked at your file, and it says you have worked for the company for two years. You are quiet, loyal and most importantly.......invisible."

I stiffened, hoping it wouldn't be what I thought.

"I need you to be my wife," Damian finally echoed the word, my eyes widened in horror.
