Chapter 1 1

The eldest daughter of the Fowler family, Sallie, loved Colby Powell with a passion that consumed her.

The whole world knew it.

But on the eve of their wedding, Colby discovered Sallie had been keeping a male model on the side.

She even went to Nevoria to marry him.

Ten years of devotion crumbled to nothing.

With that, Colby decided to stage his own death and vanish.

But the billionaire head of the Fowler family, in front of everyone, declared with a manic expression that she would die for love.

Stars glittered faintly, and the night felt cool.

A month before the wedding, Colby received the call he had been waiting for.

"Hello, Mr. Powell. The staged death service you ordered has been officially approved. The planned death is set for the day before your wedding, by driving off a cliff. If there are no issues, please sign the electronic contract later."

Colby lowered his eyes and agreed without hesitation.

After hanging up, he lingered by the roadside for a long time before heading home.

A mall's LED screen played the video of him proposing to Sallie.

In it, Colby knelt on one knee, his eyes sparkling with hope as he held up a diamond ring.

Sallie, visibly moved, took the ring and then knelt to propose back.

After slipping rings on each other's fingers, they shared a smile, tears of emotion in their eyes.

The Fowler family's global empire meant their heir's upcoming marriage was a grand affair, with their proposal video broadcast worldwide.

A passing couple saw it and gasped in awe.

"Colby and Sallie are a match made in heaven. Childhood sweethearts to engaged couple, always only having eyes for each other. That's real love."

"This must be Sallie's dream come true. Everyone knows she's crazy about him.

They say she confessed first, fought to save his family's business, and even became the youngest double-degree master at Ivy University at twenty-two, just to return to him sooner.

Colby's got a weak stomach, so Sallie cooked for him every day for a decade. That's the kind of epic love story you don't see every day. She's a legend of devotion."

Colby passed by them, a bitter smile tugging at his lips.

Everyone thought they were perfect together, that Sallie was hopelessly in love with him.

Even he couldn't believe at first that someone like her would keep a male model on the side, already married to him.

Countless nights when Sallie had "urgent matters," she was with her lover.

When Colby first learned the truth, the pain tore him apart, landing him in the hospital with a stomach flare-up.

His ever-attentive fiancée was conveniently away on a business trip.

That same night, a message came from an unknown number.

"You think Sallie really loves you? She's lying next to me right now."

Attached was a photo of them in bed, too explicit to bear.

Colby's expression faltered, his mind drifting to their past.

A decade ago, the Powell and Fowler families were equals, their ties strong.

But when Colby was ten, his parents died in an accident. Relatives swarmed, fighting over the company, and the Powell empire collapsed.

They bickered over who would take him in.

At that critical moment, Sallie burst through the door, grabbed his hand, and declared, "Colby doesn't need anyone else. The Fowler family will take care of him forever."

From that day, no one else existed in Colby's eyes.

Sallie remembered every food he liked, gave him gifts for every birthday from one to ten, learned to cook for him, set off fireworks across the city for him, and even returned during a pandemic to be by his side.

Their friends teased her for being the ultimate romantic.

At eighteen, when Sallie confessed her love, she cried in his arms, swearing to stay with him forever, to love him with her life.

But now, the one who made that vow had betrayed their decade-long love.

So Colby chose to stage his death and disappear from her world entirely.

It felt fair.

His eyes stung as he started to walk away.

A luxury car pulled up beside him, and Sallie, dressed in a sharp suit, stepped out in a hurry.

"Colby, didn't I say I'd go with you to try on suits after my meeting? Why are you out here alone?"

She draped a jacket over his shoulders and touched his hand, her eyes full of concern.

"It's chilly. You didn't even grab a coat, and your hands are freezing. What if you get sick?"

Colby stayed silent, studying her quietly.

How could someone with that same face profess love while cheating?

At the suit shop's entrance, the manager, who had been informed in advance, waited eagerly.

"Mr. Powell, Ms. Fowler, your suits are ready. Twelve sets, available to try on whenever you'd like."

Sallie nodded, about to respond, when her phone pinged.

A photo appeared, and her cheeks flushed.

It was the same look she got whenever Javier James reached out with an "urgent matter."

Catching Colby's gaze, she pocketed her phone and looked at him apologetically. "Sorry, Colby, something came up at work. I have to head back now. Don't forget to eat dinner. I'll check in later."

She kissed his cheek and hurried back to her car.

The manager approached cautiously. "Would you still like to try on the suits?"

Colby gave a faint laugh and shook his head. "No need. I won't be needing them."

After all, a corpse didn't need a suit.

But on that pivotal day in a Lower East Side bar, clutching my gift, my dream exploded. I overheard Jax' s cold voice: "Can't believe Savvy's showing up.
