Chapter 1 One

"Focus, Elena I can't see where you're going with the scalpel" Elias's voice was calm, yet firm, as he assisted her during the complex surgery. "The patient's life depends on it."

Elena's hands moved with precision, her eyes fixed on the patient's exposed abdomen. "I'm trying, Doctor. But this case is... complicated. I don't see the veins and if I'm not careful I may cut through it"

The operating room was a symphony of beeps, whirs, and soft murmurs.

The scent of antiseptic filled the air, and the bright lights overhead cast an unforgiving glare. Elena's gloved hands moved in a synchronized rhythm with Elias's, their movements choreographed and characterised by years of working together.

The patient, a young woman in her early twenties, had been in a severe car accident. Her spleen was ruptured, and her liver was bleeding profusely. Elena and Elias were working tirelessly to repair the damage.

"Step aside Let me take a closer look," Elias said, his voice low and measured. "Suction, please."

Elena expertly took the suction tube and carried out the suction, clearing the area of excess blood. Her eyes met Elias's, and he nodded in approval.

As they worked, Elena's mind wandered to the strange occurrences that had been plaguing the hospital.

"Elena, clamp," Elias's voice brought her back to the present.

She quickly handed him the clamp, her hands moving with precision. The surgery was a delicate dance, each step carefully planned and executed.

"You've been spacing out lately. Do you need a break or something." Dr. Elias asked.

The hours ticked by, each one a battle to save the patient's life. Elena's focus never wavered, her hands moving with a precision that belied her growing unease.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they finished the surgery. The patient was stable, and Elena breathed a sigh of relief.

As they closed up the patient, Elena couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.

"Elena, you're doing great work," Elias said, as they scrubbed out of the operating room. "But you need to focus. The patient's life is in your hands."

As they walked out of the operating room, Elena caught a glimpse of Dr. Adrien Cross, the new surgeon, watching her from across the hall. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Elena felt a spark of electricity run through her body.

She quickly looked away, she had always been uninterested in men and particularly hated Adrien because of his guts. Who did he think he was and why did she feel like she was drawn to him?

The rest of the day was a blur of surgeries, patient consultations, and hospital meetings.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, Elena made her way to her office. She needed to review some patient files and prepare for the next day's surgeries.

As she sat at her desk, pouring over the files, she felt a presence behind her. She turned to see Dr. Cross standing in the doorway, a smile on his face.

"Can I help you?" Elena asked, her voice cool.

"I just wanted to introduce myself," Adrien said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I'm Dr. Cross, the new surgeon. I've heard great things about your work."

Elena's voice was rusty but calm. "I've heard about you. And I hope we will work diligently avoiding each other's parts."

He walked up to her and offered to shake hands. As they shook hands, Elena felt a jolt of electricity run through her body. She quickly pulled her hand back, her face flushing.

"I look forward to working with you," Adrien said, his eyes never leaving hers.

Elena nodded.

Adrien left and as Elena was about to go home, A sharp knock on Elena's office door startled her.

It was the charge nurse, pale and breathless.

"Dr. Elena... the patient from the OR this morning-she's gone."

Elena stood up, heart racing. "Gone? What do you mean gone?"

"The bed's empty. No signs of struggle. Security footage... is missing."

"Ethan, this is unethical. It's criminal. She hasn't consented." Those chilling words, whispered in the sterile hum of an operating room, were the first thing I heard as consciousness flickered back. My heart pounded, cold dread snaking through my veins. Dr. Ben Carter, Ethan's old friend, was arguing with him. "She's my girlfriend, Ben. Practically my wife," Ethan scoffed, his voice laced with a terrifying casualness. "Chloe needs this kidney. Ava is a perfect match." Kidney. Chloe. My blood ran cold. The beautiful, fragile Chloe Vahn, who had always haunted our relationship, was now taking a piece of me, quite literally. I tried to scream, to move, but my body felt like lead, my throat raw. I felt a sharp tug, a searing line of fire on my side-the scalpel. Ten years of love, of sacrifice, building Ethan Reed and his company back from nothing, all for this. To be carved up like an animal for the woman he truly loved. When I finally regained full awareness, Ethan was by my bedside, a practiced look of concern on his face, spinning a lie about a ruptured ovarian cyst. But then, the overheard nurse's whispered conversation confirmed my nightmare: "Chloe's kidney transplant... he barely left her side." The pieces slammed into place. My despair solidified into a cold, hard resolve. No more. I grabbed my phone, scrolling to one contact I hadn't dared to call. Noah Hayes, Ethan's rival, a man of integrity. My finger trembled as I typed. "Noah," I managed, my voice raspy. "Are you still looking for a COO who knows Reed Innovate's strategies... and perhaps, a wife?" The silence stretched, then his voice, calm and serious, cut through the noise of my crumbling world. "My jet, seven days. LaGuardia."
