Chapter 1 Betrayal Unveiled

Lois went past the Reynolds estate's high gates as dawn spread its pale fingers across the sky. The estate, a huge structure made of glass and marble, glimmered in the early dawn, offering the biggest engagement party the city had ever seen. Not because she was nervous, but because she was excited, her heart raced. Today was hers and Steve's, and the future was full of dreams and promises.

She wore a light cream dress that fit her slim body well. Her chestnut hair was loosely pinned back to show off the gentle curve of her neck. The servants at the mansion were busy arranging flowers and changing the linens. The air smelt faintly of roses and polished oak. Lois felt something was wrong, even if everything looked great.

Her feet slowed as she got closer to the garden terrace where Jane was standing, her body stiff and withdrawn. Jane's hair was dark and silky, and her eyes were cold and calculating. She looked nothing like the sister Lois had known before. She wore a fashionable black dress that was crisp and exquisite, but the way her mouth was tight showed that she was nervous.

"Jane?" Lois shouted out softly, wanting to close the gap.

Jane's eyes twitched but didn't get softer. She said with a tight voice, "I'm fine." "Just... busy."

Lois nodded and tried to brush off the feeling of worry that was building in her chest. She got closer, but Jane's focus turned to something else. A tiny vibration drew her sight to the small device in her hand. Lois heard a name whispered, but it was so quiet that she couldn't hear it. "Steve..."

Jane's lips twitched in a rapid mutter, and her breath hitched. "He's on his way." "Not a single mistake."

Lois's heart raced as her perplexity turned into fear. The air got thicker, and shadows crept in even though it was morning.

"We need to be careful," Jane said in a low voice. Not yet can anyone find out.

Lois discreetly stepped back, but her stomach felt like it was getting tighter. Why keep it a secret? What kind of trouble had Jane gotten herself into? The estate, which was so beautiful, now felt like a golden cage, with the walls closing in.

She looked away, but the heaviness of that quiet talk stuck with her like a storm cloud about to break.

The quiet rumbling of a car coming up the driveway could be heard. Lois's eyes jumped to the fancy door as Steve Reynolds stepped outside, looking like the picture of power and privilege. Steve was tall and well-dressed, with dark hair pulled back to show off a strong brow and keen jawline. He moved like a guy who had been born into riches and power.

His fitted navy suit fit perfectly on his powerful body, which he had worked hard to build up over the years. His smile had an irresistible charm that melted even the hardest hearts.

Lois's heart raced as he got closer. "You're early," Steve said, looking at her face with warmth for a moment.

"I wanted to see everything before the crowds got there," she added, moving closer. The smell of his cologne mixed with the early air.

But then Steve's eyes darted quickly and sharply to the garden terrace. He nervously stroked his phone in his pocket with his fingers.

Lois looked where he was looking and saw Jane, who was uncomfortable and withdrawn. When Steve took out his phone and typed quickly on the screen, her stomach turned.

Lois saw a flash of light: a message preview from Jane. The words were too short for her to read all the way through, but they were enough to make her blood run cold: "Meet me." Important.

Lois's breath stopped. Why do they keep things from each other? Why the urgent message before a celebration?

Her mind raced as she tried to put together the pieces of the morning's worry. What was Jane keeping secret? And what did Steve know that was even more worrying?

Steve put his phone away and turned his focus back to Lois. His smile came back, but his eyes were far away.

He remarked, "Everything is going to be perfect today," his voice steady yet hiding storms beneath.

Lois reluctantly nodded, although her gut told her it was dangerous. Something unseen moved through the estate's immaculate halls, a secret that was about to come out and change everything.

Lois's willpower was weakened by her curiosity. That afternoon, she pretended to be checking out the flower arrangements and slowly made her way to the private garden, her heart racing with every careful step. The garden was a hidden paradise, with beautiful flowers surrounded by thick green hedges and fountains that made delicate sounds like whispered secrets.

Just in time, she paused behind a carved marble pillar to see the impossible. Jane and Steve were caught in a passionate hug, and Lois had never seen anything like it before. Jane's dark eyes sparkled with something. Their bodies were close together, and the tension between them was strong and electrifying. Steve's fingers became stuck in Jane's hair, and his lips brushed against her neck in a possessive way.

Lois's breath seized and her chest tightened with a betrayal so sharp it took her words away. She could practically feel the heat coming off their skin, and Jane's lips were full of unspoken promises in a sensual voice.

Then Jane's head shot up, and her eyes met Lois's hidden figure. Jane's smile was a sharp, icy, triumphant, and ruthless blade.

"Well, Lois," Jane said, her voice full with poison, "did you really think you had a chance?"

Lois fell back, and the ground moved under her. The sweet smell of the garden turned into a cage of lies.

Lois's world fell apart as Jane and Steve's laughing echoed behind her. The lies that had been holding up her future were now falling apart.

The moon was low in the sky, and it poured silver light over the well-kept gardens of the Reynolds estate. Lois's breath caught as the cold air seeped through the thin fabric of her dress. She couldn't take her eyes off of Jane, whose dark hair fell like waves at midnight and whose face was a mask of bitter pleasure. Steve stood between them, tall and imposing in his fitted suit. His jaw was tight, and his eyes were stormy but unreadable.

Lois replied, "So this is how it ends," her voice shaking but clear. "With both of you behind me."

Jane's smile turned into a sharp, poisonous curl. "Don't get too full of yourself, Lois." It was never about you.

Steve's voice came through, chilly as the night air. "That's enough." This silly game is ended. He stepped forward and squinted. "You don't know what's at stake if you think you do."

Lois's heart raced and every nerve was on edge. "Then what is this? What falsehoods have you told yourself that make you think it's okay to betray someone?

Jane's laugh was a brittle sound. "Lois, you're in over your head." "You never belonged here."

Steve's eyes darted to the estate's tall walls, where shadows danced across his sharp features. "You think you know me?" You don't know what passes through my veins.

Lois's eyes hurt. "Then tell me more."

His voice got lower and more threatening. "Things about this family that you're too weak to deal with."

Jane's laugh morphed into a snarl. "Why waste your breath on someone who's already lost?"

Lois moved closer, her chest full of anger. "I might be down, but I'm not done."

Steve's lips twisted, and he didn't even try to hide his disgust. "You'll never make it in this world, Lois." "Not without us."

Lois's anger was like a raging inferno, but his words were cold. "Look at me."

Jane stretched out and touched Lois's arm with her fingers. It was a cold and possessive gesture. "You'll fall again." No one will catch you this time.

Lois tore away, and the air was thick with tension. Steve's laughter resonated behind her, a frightening sound that threatened death.

The huge staircase looked like a shining white river to Lois. The marble steps caught the warm light from the crystal chandeliers above. There was a lot of tension in the air surrounding her, and every breath she took was like a jagged shard cutting through the silence. Steve was only a few feet away, and the wide hall framed his silhouette. His dark eyes flashed with a cold fire that sent a shudder straight through her.

He said in a low, clipped voice, "Lois, this isn't your world."

Her heart raced, but her eyes never wavered. "It's as much my world as it is yours."

Steve's jaw got tight. "You don't know what you're up against."

"I know betrayal," she said back, each syllable full of silent rage. "I understand it now."

His hand flew out without warning and grabbed her wrist with a grip that felt like iron. "That's enough."

She jerked away, but his grip only got tighter, drawing her closer to him. The cool marble air combined with the strong smell of his cologne, making it smell both good and bad.

He said in a gruff whisper, "You're in over your head."

Lois's breath caught. "I'm right where I should be."

His eyes got darker, as if a storm she had never seen before was behind them. Then he pushed her back with a swift, violent thrust.

Her body fell, and she gasped in shock as the world whirled out of control. She tried to catch herself by waving her arms, but the smooth marble didn't let her.

The cold, hard surface came up like a wave that would not stop until it devoured her whole.

The sound of her heels hitting the steps, the gasp of horror from people who couldn't see her, and the sound of the crash all made time seem to slow down.

Pain shot through her body like a white-hot light.

She remembered Steve's nasty smirk, Jane's mocking laugh, and the future she thought was hers slipping away.

And suddenly she was taken by darkness.

The great estate's wealth melted away, leaving nothing but silence and the painful knowledge that things would never be the same.
