Chapter 1 Knowing Juliet

"Hello friends, tonight is my eldest daughter, Juliet's 20th birthday. On this special occasion, she is also going to be engaged to the handsome millionaire Collins Cordis, the CEO of Cordis group." Sherilyn announced in the large hall of guests. Juliet's jaw hung to the floor. It was the first time she heard Sherilyn address her as her daughter. If this was a dream she does not want it to end.

Juliet's dad was the biggest philanderer in the world. Her mother waited with patience for him to change. But that day never happened. Unable to accept her father's infidelity, when Juliet was ten years old, she killed him and went to prison.

Sherlyn was one of his courtesans who was smart to play the game on him and enjoy the Greenfield's millions worth property. She entered Juliet's life as a mother but for a curse. Sherlyn took over the Greenfield hospital that Juliet's mom owned since she was in the prison and accepted custody of Juliet. However she had never seen Mollie and her the same.

Sherlyn enjoyed the profits of the hospital and spent hardly anything on the upbringing and future of Juliet. While Mollie her daughter was doing her graduation in an ivy league university, Juliet struggled to earn a scholarship in NYU because the former wouldn't spend a penny on her.

But tonight she understood something was fishy. It was the eve of her engagement with the love of her life. She did not want it to turn into a disaster bringing Sherlyn. Juliet ignored her.

The guests clapped for her after the announcement was made and some even personally came and congratulated her. However, all of them were fake. She could hear from behind the mocking whispers of people calling her a murderer's daughter.

Juliet could not digest the insult. Her eyes welled tears. She saw Sherlyn from the corner of her eyes. She had a sinister grin looking ahead and talking to the guests as if she did not hear anything.

Juliet boosted her morale with positivity. Once Collins is with her, he will put a stop to all the nonsense. Nobody can point a finger at her. She will be Mrs Juliet Cordis, the wife of millionaire Collin Cordis in no time. "Where is Collins, Sylvia?" She asked, looking around the fancy meeting hall decorated with flowers.

"He might have been struck in traffic, will soon be here." The enigma in Sherlyn's looks was unmistakable. Juliet hopes everything is going to be fine. She doesn't want Sherlyn to create a drama during her engagement and bring discomfort to Collins. He is a gentleman who agreed to marry her despite her frosty family. But a part of her warned of the possible cynicism. Why is he not in the venue yet?

Juliet took a long breath and brought out her phone from her handbag. She couldn't stand the wait. Anxiously she called Collins and the line connected on the second ring. But much to her predicament instead of his voice, she heard the moans of a woman from behind. Her heart made a leap but before she could function on it she heard Sherlyn call her.

"There are more guests arriving. Will you keep sticking that phone to your ears or greet the visitors? Well, what better can I expect from a lunatic's daughter." Sherlyn huffed out fanning her face with her hands and sashayed to the entrance in her stylish long pencil heels with a plastic smile.

Ten minutes later, they stepped out of a luxury car. Her stepsister arrived, holding onto Collin's arm and their eyes met. Mollie and Collins's intimacy was obvious which brought a jolt of electricity on Juliet. The moans of the woman earlier were of Mollie, her step sister. It was clear to her now

Lately, Collins had been distant and was always using work as an excuse to avoid her. She should have understood it as a warning sign. But she was stupid to trust him. Her heart sank at the realization. "Why did you do this to me, Collins?" Her soft voice involuntarily broke out though she wanted to be infrangible.

They had been together for five years and just last month, he even invested a million dollars into the hospital. Why would he invest in her holdings if he had no interest in her? Now she understands the mathematics behind it. That was the investment on Mollie. Were they also going to snatch her hospital away from her?

"Hello sissy, how are you? Happy Birthday to you." Mollie greeted her with a contemptuous simper.

Juliet did not acknowledge her. She was fuming from within. As she covered their distance, she noticed the red marks on Mollie's neck and the creases on Collin's shirt. Earth shook under her feet. The uneasy feeling in her grew.

Collins looked at her with a glare as if she was some sort tincture which would burn him. Such an amount of abhorrence? Why? What did she do that he suddenly hated her so much?

Mollie pretended ignorance even after witnessing their strained relationship. Juliet knew for sure she had a good say it. She was dressed lavishly, as if she was the star of the banquet. The fancy dress screamed like it was her engagement more than hers. "I am sorry Juliet, Collins had insisted on picking me up, which was why we are together and a little late. Hope you do not mind."

Forcing a smile, she spoke to Mollie, "Cool. It is alright. Collin is soon going to be your brother. I am glad you could finally bring him here." Juliet was smart if only her days were in favour, she would have shown Mollie where she actually belonged. She was now sure Mollie was playing a number on her using Collins.

Mollie choked on her own spit after hearing her words. Her face went red with anger as if she witnessed a storm but no sooner she saw the placating features of Collins, every discomfort in her vanished. "You were busy, Collins?" Mollie had a lopsided grin. The satrize in her eyes was unmatched.

"What's so funny about it?" Juliet exchanged looks between them while trying to control her erratic heartbeat.

She tried to take Collin's arm to lead him onto the stage, but he coldly pulled away. "Don't touch me with your filthy hands, you whore." He shouted.

"A whore?" Such a brutal accusation was unacceptable. Juliet looked at him in shock as words got sealed in her throat. Butterflies rolled in her stomach with grief. "Think before you make a nuisance here, Collins." Her voice was low but influential with caution.

"Oh yeah?" Sarcasm in his question was evident. He pulled out a report from the file and threw it on her face. "You are carrying another man's child in your womb and want to get engaged to me, you pimp?"

His preposterous, inhumane allegation made her jump off her own skin. With shivering hands she took the fallen report from the floor and blood washed away from her face. "Pregnancy Positive."
