Mate. The word forms in my mind with absolute certainty. After years of loneliness, I've found my mate. I look up into his green eyes, expecting to see the same recognition, the same wonder. Instead, I see horror. "Excuse me," he says, his voice like ice. "I think you're mistaken." The happiness in my chest freezes. "But I felt-" I start to say. "You felt nothing," he cuts me off. "And I'd appreciate if you kept your distance." Each word is a slap. People around us turn to look. My cheeks burn. "Some people will do anything for attention," he says loudly. "Even manufacture connections that don't exist." ~ Luce is an orphan werewolf hiding her true self at university, afraid the powerful elite who ruined her family will find her. Daniel is the golden-boy heir to the most famous werewolf pack, pressured to marry a "perfect" girlfriend chosen by his family. But when they accidentally bump into each other and they both feel their unbreakable connection. Scared of his family's anger, Daniel rejects Luce in front of everyone, crushing her heart. Now Luce wants to vanish, convinced she'll never belong. Daniel tries to forget her, but the bond won't let him. When danger hits his pack, he has to ask Luce for help. She agrees, but only to protect others. But slowly, secrets unravel. They start to see each other clearly: two outsiders, pretending to be someone they're not. With rival packs circling and Daniel's family closing in, they must decide: follow the rules and stay apart, or risk everything for a love that could change their world... and themselves.
Luce's POV
I keep my head down as I navigate through the sea of students. The campus feels too open. It feels too exposed.
My scholarship letter is folded in my pocket. It reminds me that I don't belong here among the pack elite. I grip the strap of my bag tighter. It's an old habit when I feel watched.
Someone bumps into my shoulder without apologizing. I don't look up.
The letter in my pocket crinkles when I touch it. I was standing in my tiny apartment when I received months ago, my hands shaking.
"Full academic scholarship to Stormclaw University," I had read aloud to the empty room.
I should feel proud. Instead, I feel like a target.
The campus clock rings, startling me. For a moment, I'm not here anymore.
I'm five years old again. The clock in our family hall rings midnight. There are screams outside.
"Luce, hide!" My mother pushes me into the hidden space beneath the floorboards. "Don't make a sound. Don't come out until I call for you."
Her eyes are wild with fear. Blood stains her nightgown.
"Mom-"
"Promise me, Luce!" Her voice breaks.
"I promise," I whisper.
She kisses my forehead and closes the hatch. Footsteps pound above me. Growls vibrate through the wood.
Then comes the screaming.
I clamp my hands over my ears, but it doesn't help. I hear everything. The tearing. The pleading. The silence that follows.
No one ever calls my name.
"Hey, watch it!"
I blink, back in the present. I've stopped walking in the middle of the path. A guy scowls as he walks around me.
"Sorry," I mutter, but he's already gone.
I hurry toward my dorm. It's the only place I feel safe here, apart from the library.
My dorm room is small but private. It's a rare luxury I fought for, claiming a medical condition. The administration didn't question it when Professor Nolan backed my request.
I spread my books across my desk.
I spend several hours studying. Knowledge is protection.
My phone buzzes with a notification and I finally put my pen on the table. I shouldn't look, but I do.
Caroline Matthews has posted new photos. "Pre-gala shopping with the girls! Can't wait for Friday!"
The images show her and her friends surrounded by shopping bags. They're laughing in a high-end boutique.
I scroll further. Daniel Harrington appears in the comments. "Can't wait to see you there."
I close the app and set my phone down harder than necessary.
The annual University Gala. The social event of the year. I've managed to avoid it for two semesters. This year is different.
"You can't hide forever, Luce."
Professor Nolan's voice echoes in my memory. It was the last conversation we had before his heart attack last month.
"The Abernathy line has always been resilient," he had said, his lined face serious. "Your parents would want you to live, not just survive."
"I'm fine on my own," I had argued.
"Connection isn't weakness." He'd squeezed my hand. "It's strength. Your parents knew that."
I rub my eyes. The invitation to the gala sits unopened on my desk. As a scholarship student, my attendance is "highly encouraged." That means it's mandatory if I want to keep my funding.
I pick up the cream-colored envelope. My finger traces the embossed university seal.
One night. I can endure one night.
The next evening, I stand in front of my small mirror. The dress I found at the secondhand store is simple but elegant. It's black, floor-length, with cap sleeves. It doesn't scream money. It doesn't whisper poverty either.
I twist my dark hair into a simple updo. No makeup. No jewelry except my mother's small silver pendant, hidden beneath the dress.
My phone buzzes. The rideshare is here.
I take a deep breath, grab my small clutch, and leave before I can change my mind.
The campus center has been transformed. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling. White flowers spill from tall vases. Students in formal wear mill about, their laughter echoing off the marble floor.
I hesitate at the entrance. My heart pounds so loudly I'm sure everyone can hear it.
"Miss? Your name?" A student with a tablet stands at the door.
"Luce Abernathy," I say quietly.
He scrolls, then nods. "Scholarship student. Table fourteen."
I feel the stares as I walk in. Or maybe I'm imagining them. Years of hiding make you paranoid.
Table fourteen is at the back, filled with other scholarship students. None of them are from established packs. We're the charity cases, carefully segregated from the elite.
I take my seat, nodding at the others but not introducing myself. The empty chair beside me feels like a relief.
From here, I can see the entire room. The social hierarchy of Stormclaw University on display.
The wolves who will someday lead our world laugh and drink champagne at the center tables. They were born into their power.
And then there's me. Last survivor of the once-respected Abernathy pack. If they knew who I really was...
The doors open again. A hush falls over the room.
Daniel Harrington enters with his girlfriend Caroline Matthews on his arm. His pack surrounds him like a protective detail. Even from here, I can sense his power.
My breath catches. I've seen him around campus, of course. Everyone knows the Harrington heir. But tonight, in his perfectly tailored suit, he looks every inch the future alpha.
For a moment, his eyes sweep the room and seem to land on me. I quickly look down at my empty plate.
"I just need to get through tonight," I whisper to myself. "Just tonight."
I feel something shift in the air. It's like the moment before lightning strikes.
