Chapter 1 A Debt Solution

"Can you stop calling me? This is barely 6am and I'm trying to get some sleep. You need to get a life, Trey. This can't work." I heaved a sigh, as I responded to the call that had me up from sleep.

Ever since I ended things with my boyfriend. I had been greeted every morning with incessant calls and messages. He would often cry via the call or send long paragraphs of text on how sorry he was with the way he treated me.

Just like always, a call came in the morning. Not bothered to check who the caller was. I quickly hung up the call, in a bit to catch some sleep, just before the sun was up.

The call persisted for a moment, forcing sleep out of my eyes.

I grunted, squeezed my fist into a tight fit then hit it on the bed. I rolled over to the edge of the bed, picked up the phone, answered the call without a second thought.

"Abigail, are you okay? Who's Trey?" the voice from the other end of the line responded back.

On the realization of who the person was. I placed my hands over my mouth as my cheeks blushed bright pink. What had I just done?

"Sorry, dad. I thought it was someone else. Nevermind all I said." I responded with a slight heave, my hands clung tightly to my bed sheets.

There was a moment of silence. I kept wondering how I made such a mistake. I knew I was used to the routine of Trey calling every morning but then I should have just checked.

"Come to the balcony. We've business to discuss."

"Business? Is everything..." I was about to ask when he dropped the call on me.

One thing I've come to know about my father over the years, was that he never liked to repeat himself more than once.

I found my way to the balcony.

Father's shoulder was broad, I could vividly remember how I hid from my mom behind his back when I was much younger. That had been one of those few times when I saw him smile. His back was against me as he looked over the outskirt of the city.

"I'm here, dad." I called out with a slight cough to get his attention.

"Have a seat," he said, his back still against me.

After what felt like forever, he turned over. Walked towards where I sat and dropped a file on the table.

"Open it," he commanded.

I took hold of the file and opened it up. It was a stack of printed papers. More like audits of the company.

"Dad, what's this,?" I asked as I flipped through the papers.

"We are at the edge of losing our company."

I stopped dead in my tracks. My eyes glued to the various negative remarks on the audits. How could this be? There's no way my dad's company was going to fold. It didn't fold during the pandemic, it certainly won't now.

"Dad, that can't be so. I mean we have been at this stage before and we got out of it. We can't let it happen. We must do everything to have it back."

"I love the enthusiasm but I'm afraid we haven't gone down this way before. We can't handle it. We are losing customers and the government has placed heavy impoundment on our imported goods. Nothing is going out, nothing is coming in either."

"Oh my God...so we let all the years of labour go in vain?"

"Certainly not, there is one more thing left to do and that's where you come in."

"Sure, anything to move the company out of this deepshit."

It still amazed me how dad was quick to let everything he had worked for go like that. I knew there had to be something that could be done. Everything can't go just like that.

"Marriage! That's the only solution. You're going to marry Jonathan Edwards, he has offered to clear all debts if the two of you marry."

"My marriage? How is that going to help out with anything? I don't even have a fiancée to start with."

"You don't need to have one. There's one waiting for you and he needs you already."

"Dad please, that's enough. I can't get married and you know it. How do I get married to a stranger." I responded before I stood on my feet.

"I wasn't done talking to you. Sit down!" Dad hollered out just as I was about to leave the balcony.

I went back to my seat, folded my hands in akimbo before crossing legs over

"You'll do as I say. You dare not disobey me. This marriage is one of the sacrifices you've to make for the family."

"How about the sacrifices I have been doing for the family? What has that brought me."

"You better watch your tongue right now. You just have to be married to Jonathan for six months and after that, you're free to do whatever. Six months that will help restore all the debts we owe and save our business. Do you want the company to fold up?"

"Dad!" I called out, standing to my feet. " I can't do this. I understand how the company could fold up as a result of this but you've to consider what I feel. How do I get married to a stranger? I won't marry him."

"You dare not!" Dad thundered before smacking me across the cheeks.

I held my cheeks firmly, I stared at him as I searched his eyes to know what had gotten over him.

I walked out of the balcony, tears dropping down my cheeks.

"Sweetheart, are you okay?" mum called out just before I got into my room and shut the door behind me.

How could dad make such a decision without considering how I felt?. I was his only child but that didn't mean he could use me as a means to set up his company again.

I sobbed out loudly, my sobs and tears being absorbed by the pillow I had buried my head in.

Just then, my phone rang out again. It had to be Trey this time. He hadn't called since morning.

"Trey, not this time please. Just drop a message." I answered, trying to wipe off the tears from my eyes.

"Trey? Ouch, I'm hurt. My name is Jonathan Edwards and I suppose you must've heard of me already. Tomorrow you're going to be my wife and I need you to be in your best behavior."
