Genevieve Reed My life was full of happiness. Graduating from university with flying colors, and getting my veterinary license at a relatively young age. I was a girl my parents would be proud of. Until that terrible day came. The kidnapping lasted for one horrible week. Torture and unbearable pain from hunters looking for a Wolf. Yes. One. Because once I realized who he was looking for, was a Werewolf who trapped me into his world. Easton Kane My destiny has been outlined. I would be the leader of the pack and be their protector. I never thought my life would be different, until I Genevieve Reed. The veterinarian who helped me. The soulmate I never thought I'd find. As soon as I wanted to pick her up, the damn hunter took her away from me. Once I got her back, I wouldn't let her out of my grasp.
This hurts.
I can't take it anymore. I want to give up. This is too painful.
A kick came flying back at my head, but I quickly parried it with my hand. I groaned from the unbearable pain as my fractured hand came face-to-face with his leg again.
"Stop!" I muttered between pain and exhaustion. "Please."
But they don't stop. They won't stop this torture. They need something from me, something I don't have. Unfortunately, reality won't satisfy them. They will always think I'm hiding what they want. What they need.
I slowly stood up. My body was too weak to fight back. I knew that. However, I will never die without a fight.
That made one of my attackers furious. "You damn stubborn girl." He kicked me once more, and for the umpteenth time, I was thrown to the floor. The pain again made it difficult for me to breathe. The man pulled my hair again. "Tell me where he is?"
"I don't know," I said breathlessly. "I really don't know."
The man kicked me again. "Shit."
The door to the dark room opened again. His partner returned from nowhere with bread in his hand. "He hasn't said yet?"
The first man let go of my hair. "This damn woman won't open her mouth." He hissed and slapped me once more. I staggered to the floor. He stomped on my back. "If you don't say , I swear you'll-"
"Relax, Liu." The second man pulled Liu back, and squatted in front of me. "We don't want her to die. But, you should immediately rethink your decision to hide the Wolf' whereabouts." I tried to get up, but the man grabbed my neck and pressed me to the ground. The man's eyes flashed with anger. The only thing going through my head at that moment was DANGER. I immediately squirmed. "I don't have much time, little girl. You'd better rethink your decision before I kill you."
This is too much.
I couldn't breathe. His presence seemed to pull the air from my lungs, and I couldn't breathe.
Please. Please. Somebody help me.
I grabbed his hand. Trying to pull him away from me, claw him, hit him, whatever, but I was too weak to make him budge. My eyes watered, but I tried to stay focused. It was so hard to focus when he was trying to kill me.
"Lan, you almost killed him." Liu said.
Lan just smiled and let me go as if he hadn't just tried to strangle me to death. He placed a piece of bread and a bottle of water next to me.
"Drink," he ordered.
Liu just glared at me and left the room.
I tried to get up and do as he instructed. My hand holding the bottle was shaking.
Lan looked at me with his piercing eyes. He was watching all my movements carefully, as if he wouldn't miss a single move I made.
"You should answer the question, Little Girl. There's no benefit to protecting those wolves. We don't want to torture humans, but you're not giving us a choice."
Was it another of his manipulation techniques to get me to talk? But, Lan was wrong, I really didn't know anything.
"I...don't...know," I stammered. My neck ached from his choking. I was sure his handprints were embossed on my neck.
Lan sighs. "Why are you protecting him so much?" I shook my head in desperation. "I really... don't know."
Lan tilted his head. His hand grabbed my jaw and I closed my eyes. Afraid he'll strangle me again.
"Look at me! Tell me that you really don't know."
My breath caught. However, I forced myself to open my eyes and look at him. "I don't know anything."
Lan was silent for a few seconds before he swore. The man got up and ruffled his hair. "So how come the smell is on you?"
"Smell?"
"Tell me, Little Gir1. Did you meet a big dog or a wolf?"
I leaned against the damp wall. "I'm a veterinarian. Of course I meet many large animals, including dogs. However, a few days ago someone brought in a dog that had been shot. I'm not sure what breed of dog it was, because the person who brought it was so in a hurry. He just asked me to remove the bullet from the dog's body and he took it away after giving me a wad of money. That's all I know. Really."
Lan was silent for a long time. Seems to be hoping to find a lie in my explanation.
However, I didn't lie. "Why didn't you say it from the beginning?"
"Your colleague, Liu, didn't believe me. I already explained it."
"You said he was shot, huh?" He pulled out a gun and I was stunned. Trying to crawl away from him. "Relax. I'm not going to kill you now." He took out the bullets. Unlike the other bullets I've seen, the bullets had a pure white color like silver. "Is the bullet like this?"
I nodded slowly.
"No wonder you have the smell." Lan looked me up and down, then . "You look like shit, Little Girl."
"What?"
Lan didn't answer. Unlike Liu, he only watched from afar.
They kidnapped me from my house three days ago. Liu tortured me for three days while asking me the same question. 'Where is the wolf?' A question I've answered a hundred times. I don't know. Liu will keep trying to squeeze the answers he wants out of me. Lan would just look, watch, and once he did, he was lethal.
I was much more afraid of him than Liu. "What exactly are you guys looking for?"
Lan refocused on me. He stared at me silently for a moment before crouching down in front of me.
His hand went through my hair and placed it behind my ear. "You really don't know, do you?"
I shook my head. "What wolf are you referring to? Why are you so stubborn?"
Lan didn't answer. His eyes only focused on my body. Then he slowly checked my wounds. "You're going to need to see a doctor," he said as if he wasn't the one tormenting me in the first place. "I need to confirm your statement, Little Girl. Tell me your full name."
"Genevieve Reed."
"Genevieve Reed. Of course. I'll find out about what you said, Little Girl. However, if you lie, you will know the consequences."
I gulped nervously and nodded.
"Get some rest. I'll get the medicine box and clean your wounds. Eat that bread first, I'll bring you some food."
Lan returned a few minutes later with the medicine box he'd promised. I was too scared to question. So, I just focused on the gentleness of his touch. He was completely different from what he'd shown me over the past three days.
Maybe he did trust me. Maybe his kindness was part of his interrogation technique. But whatever it was, I was grateful that he was willing to treat my wounds. I may be a veterinarian, but I also have some knowledge of human wounds. Had he not treated and cleaned my wounds, I could have gotten an infection and everything would have been much worse.
"When we confirm what you said, I will return you, Little Girl. However, on one condition, you won't tell them anything about us. After all, they won't be able to find us."
My hands clenched into tight fists. Who exactly are these people?
