"Hey, I saw your profile. You seem... real." Nia stared at the screen, her thumb hovering over the reply button. She'd read his message three times already. In a sea of tired pickup lines and copy-pasted introductions, this one stood out. Not because it was clever. Because it wasn't.
It started with a message.
"Hey, I saw your profile. You seem... real."
Nia stared at the screen, her thumb hovering over the reply button. She'd read his message three times already. In a sea of tired pickup lines and copy-pasted introductions, this one stood out. Not because it was clever. Because it wasn't. Was it the message or the sender, Nia wasn't sure. But she knew it was different.
She replied.
Within minutes, the conversation flowed easily, surprisingly so. His name was Jay. He worked in marketing, had a rescue dog named Bax, and claimed his greatest accomplishment was learning how to make the perfect scrambled eggs. Nia liked that-modest, warm, oddly specific.
After a few days of messaging back and forth, they graduated to late-night phone calls. Nia found herself laughing at 1 a.m. again, something she hadn't done since college. Jay was funny, but not in a performative way. He didn't try to impress her. He just was. And it impressed her. Greatly.
"I love me a guy who can effortlessly make me laugh," Nia thought to herself.
By the end of week two, Jay asked, "So, should we do this for real?"
"You mean, like, meet?"
He chuckled. "Yeah. That old-fashioned thing."
Nia smiled at her ceiling. "Yeah. Let's do it."
They picked a Sunday afternoon. Quiet, unassuming. Coffee and a walk in the park. No pressure.
