Chapter 1 Whispers in the Void

Rain-soaked cobblestones gleamed under the lantern's wavering glow as Liora sprinted across Nightwell's silent square, her cloak snapping behind her like a midnight pennant. Every breath she drew felt electric, as if it carried a secret she was only just discovering. The observatory's wooden doors loomed ahead, carved with swirling constellations that had once been her greatest comfort. Tonight, something ancient and terrible was stirring among them.

Inside, the familiar scent of beeswax candles and oiled brass greeted her, but the stillness felt wrong-hollow, as if the room itself was holding its breath. She leapt onto the observation platform, her boots clattering against the planks, and lunged for her father's telescope. The great brass instrument, normally a portal to the heavens, sat cold and silent beneath the shattered dome above.

Liora's heart pounded as she peered through the eyepiece. Instead of the usual tapestry of silver lights, she found only a patchwork of black emptiness. One by one, bright stars blinked out like distant lanterns snuffed by an unseen hand. A ragged gasp escaped her as she swiveled to the star-chart pinned to the wall. Finger tracing trembling lines, she reached the Celestial Crown-a ring of stars she had charted as a child. Now, it was gone, replaced by a yawning void.

A tremor ran through the platform, and she stumbled back. The candles guttered, casting dancing shadows against the walls. Then, without warning, a single star tumbled from the sky above, trailing crystalline light. It fell in a graceful arc, like a tear of pure luminescence, before striking the wooden floor with a crack that echoed through the hollow chamber.

Her breath caught in her throat. Instinct propelled her forward; her hands shot out to catch the falling shard. She cradled the tiny orb-no bigger than her palm-as it pulsed with a soft, aching glow. Warmth seeped into her skin, and she swear she heard the faintest whisper, carried on a breath of wind that had no place inside these walls.

"Liora..."

Her name, breathed with hushed urgency. She froze, eyes wide, heart lodged in her throat. The shard's light flared, and a chorus of distant voices rose around her, a weaving tapestry of pleas and laments.

"Save us... please..."

Tears blurred her vision. She glanced toward the door, desperate for reassurance. Instead, it creaked open, and a tall figure padded into the room, face hidden beneath a deep hood. Candlelight glinted off the hilt of a dagger at his belt, and panic hammered through her veins.

"Step away from it," he ordered, voice low and urgent.

Her instinct shouted to flee, but she clutched the star to her chest. "What is this?" she managed, voice trembling.

He froze for a heartbeat, then stepped closer. His eyes-dark, haunted-flicked between her face and the glowing orb. "A fragment of a dying constellation," he said, each word clipped. "It belongs to the Celestial Crown. Without it... the rest will follow."

Liora's stomach twisted. "But why me?"

His gaze tightened. "It chose you. And that may doom us all."

She retreated a step, knocking into a coil of rope. The shard slipped free and rolled into a pool of candlelight. Its glow spread across the floorboards, illuminating delicate runes carved into the wood. The air thrummed with raw power, as if the very earth was awakening.

"No!" Liora lunged for it, but the stranger's hand closed around her wrist, firm and cold. Sparks danced along the runes, and the candles snapped out, plunging the room into darkness broken only by the shard's spectral light.

A screech of splintering glass rent the air as the dome shattered overhead. Moonlight poured in through a jagged hole, revealing a sky that was no longer still. The stars writhed, blinking in and out of existence like dying fireflies.

The stranger released her wrist, stepping back with an expression of grim resignation. Liora knelt and retrieved the shard, its warmth now a fierce pulse against her palm.

"I'll help you," she whispered, voice firm despite the tremor in her limbs. "Tell me what to do."

He studied her, darkness in his eyes giving way to a sliver of hope. At last, he nodded. "Then come. The night is darker than you know-and only you can bring back its light."

Above them, the heavens trembled-an urgent plea echoing across the void-and Liora's heart surged with both fear and purpose. The journey had begun.
