Chapter 1 Chapitre 1

Chapter 1

Isabelle had never wanted to know. Since his childhood, her aunt Liza had explained to him that certain things were better ignored, better buried. But by discovering this old dusty grimoire, covered with old runes, a strange thrill traversed his back. It was an accident, or maybe not. Her trembling fingers had opened her before she even thought about it. The cover, worn out by time, did not seem to want to give in under her hands, as if she resisted her touch. But Isabelle was not a child, she was no longer a child. She was ready to discover what he had been hidden from her, which Liza had always forbidden her to know.

The words took place slowly, like a litany, engraved in a language which it did not know. However, in a way that she did not understand, they seemed to touch her in the depths of herself. The meaning of the sentences formed, even if her mind was screaming to stop him, to warn her that she crossed an invisible line. It reads again and again, the spirit invaded by fragments of meaning. A prophecy. His prophecy. That of the cursed companion.

"... the soul mate of the cursed companion will perish under his love, and his heart will be broken, carried away by the curse which will twist his destiny ..."

Isabelle froze, with a beating heart in her chest. His hands closed on the pages, as if reading itself had pierced it. She got up suddenly, overthrowing the old wooden chair. The calm and silent room seemed to tighten around it, like an invisible trap. She had read what could not be read. She had discovered what Liza had always hidden her.

His thoughts were in disorder, whirlwind like a storm. She should have stopped before turning this last page. But she had continued. Because she needed to know. Because she no longer had a choice. And now, a truth that she would never have wanted to face was imposed on her: she was not just the companion of an alpha. She was that of the Alpha that she had not yet met. And fate had decided that he would die for her.

She felt the ground tremble under her feet. No. There must have been an error. A misunderstanding. A bad omen. But nothing could hide the growing concern in her chest, the one who sneaned under her skin like a poison, insidious and slow. Isabelle brutally closed the grimoire, as if to expel this truth written in the pages.

"Why ... why didn't you ever tell me, Liza? She whispered, her eyes filled with tears, throbbing pain in her voice.

It was the first time that she asked this question. The first time she dared to face this truth: Liza had lied to her. All her life, she had protected him, hid it, but at what price? Why didn't she tell her the truth? Why had she condemned him to live in the ignorance of her own destiny? Isabelle dropped on the sofa, her swirling spirit, exhausted by revelation.

A noise in the corridor made her jump. Voices. Steps. A cry, perhaps, but more suffocated. She got up suddenly, her eyes scrutinizing the door. It was the sound of a threatening foreign presence. She heard murmurs. These foreigners were there.

She rushed to the window, trying to see through the curtains, but he was too dark outside. However, she knew. She knew they were there. And they were approaching.

With a beating heart, she turned to the door. Liza was not in the house. Where was it? Isabelle should have known it, but fear had taken over, obscuring her thoughts. She couldn't wait. She had to leave. NOW.

She grabbed a bag, supplying the little she could take: a few gold coins, clothes, important documents. The bases of his existence, reduced to a few objects which could not appease turmoil in his mind. She didn't have time to think, no time to cry. The steps in the corridor approached. They were there. The smell of the stranger, subtle but present, invaded the air. Isabelle rose to the back door, where a steep path led to the forest.

A massive silhouette appeared in the shadows, blocking his way. A man. His short breath mingled with the fresh air of the night. He was wearing a dark jacket, his piercing gaze fixing her. Isabelle took a step. He looked too sure of him, too calm. An alarm echoed in his head. Who was this man? What did he want?

He smiled, a smile that promised nothing good. "You can't flee, Isabelle. »»

She stared at him, hugging her fists. She didn't know him, but he knew who she was. And he also knew that she was not alone.

" Who are you ? She asked in a firm voice, but trembling with a fear that she did not want to admit.

The man advanced a step. "It's time that you understand, Isabelle. It's time that you understand everything. »»

She felt an icy chill run behind her back. His instinct howled him to leave, to flee, but it was too late. Another silhouette emerged in the shade. There were many of them. Their goal was clear. They were there for her.

In a quick movement, Isabelle turned away, seeking to escape their grip. But before she could take a step, a firm hand landed on her shoulder. A simple contact, but he made it stop. She turned her head slowly, crossing the gaze of the one who had caught her. His eyes were dark, almost threatening. An alpha. A powerful man. Alpha.

She didn't know why, but something in her recognized this man. An invisible link. But there was something else. A danger, a whirlwind of power that made her suffocate. And that was all she knew. She was condemned, and the curse that weighed on her was just beginning.
