Chapter 1 Part One

'zrrrr! zrrr!' I could hear the sound of my mum snoring from where I'm standing doing the dirty dishes, I could tell she passed out from having too much alcohol. The only time she's sober is if her alcohol finish and we don't have money for a new one.

She always tell me that I'm lazy, that's why I don't make more money. Whereas I have several jobs I'm doing and all the money I make from those jobs, she always spend them on alcohol. The house we are staying in was brought by my father before he died. He died when I was ten years old and now I'm eighteen years old.

My mum suffered a great loss with his death and since then she has not been herself. She has dated a lot of men after, some who are alcoholic like her, some who are abusive and some who even make passes at me. And she always bring whoever she's dating to the house to live with us.

The house has worn out after my mum has sold everything in it, the house was the only thing left that truly belongs to us and she has threatened me many times that if I don't make enough money, she would sell the house or marry me off to old man Harry, whose breath stinks due to too much drinking.

I finished the dishes and checked whether we have anything left to eat this morning, because if she wakes up and realized that I've not prepared anything for her to eat, its another problem. We have two eggs remaining from the eggs given to us by George- a farmer who I usually help out in his farm for some foodstuffs in return. I saw that we have a small bread remaining, so I prepared the eggs to eat with the bread.

I have just finished eating my own share when I heard my Mum grunting from where she's Lying down, "Hmp! bring me water, I'm thirsty, and bring me food too" I quickly stood up from where I'm sitting to get her water and food.

"I will be going out to help George on the farm, we don't have anything left to eat" I said bringing water and food to her. She snatched the food and drink from my hand and started scoffing it down her throat.

"Tell that old man to give you plenty food or pay you, you can't be working and he will be paying you with small foodstuffs, if not look for another job"

"Okay I will, do you need anything else before I go"

"yes, give me some money, I need to buy more drinks" She said stretching her hands. "I don't have any money" I told her

"You stupid girl, did you spend all the money already. what about the money you made from cleaning Mrs wood's house last week" She shouted angrily. "Well, I would still have money left if you did not use everything to buy Alcohol" I said shouting back at her

She stood up angrily from where she's sitting making the plate on her lap fall and gave me a big slap. I fell down on the floor crying while holding my cheeks and she started kicking me and shouting

"You stupid girl, who said you could shout back at me, I let you stay in this house you ungrateful whore. Make more money or else you will be living on the street with no roof on your head" After kicking me for a while, she left me on the floor crying and went to her room.

I stood up and cleaned up the remnants of food left on the floor, clean the dishes and went out to help George on his farm.
