Everything around her seemed to be falling apart. She couldn't believe that Ryder would one day end their eight years marriage over s strange woman. She begged, she pleaded, apologized but his mind was made up and it became clear when he gave her the divorce papers. But her hurt turned to anger when she discovers it was all a ruse. It was never love. He had only been with her because she had an inheritance she herself didn't know about and he wanted it. But that was not even the worse part. Sarah her best friend had been in on it she was even the master mind. She was going to make them pay. For the pain and betrayal but them love comes knocking from an unexpected place. Would it be enough to change her mind?
Her whole body shook as she tried hard to hold back her tears while she finished packing the last of her things. Everything she had once known and loved was falling apart right in front of her eyes, and she felt completely powerless to change it.
She couldn't help but remember what had happened just a few days earlier. Deep down, she had known for a long time that he was not being faithful to her, but her love for him was too strong to walk away. What truly shocked her was that he would decide to end their eight-year marriage because of it.
FLASHBACK
"Avery, I really wish you would stop making this so difficult. This marriage just isn't working, and honestly, I don't want it to work anymore," Ryder said, his voice filled with irritation.
Avery stepped closer to him, desperate to stop him from continuing. "Please, Ryder, don't say those words. I'm begging you, please don't."
He let out a frustrated sigh, running his fingers through his hair as if searching for the right words. "It doesn't change anything. It really doesn't change anything, Aves. We should just go our own ways. It's really that simple."
"Simple? You are throwing away eight years of our lives together, and you think that is simple?" Avery's voice trembled with emotion.
"Eight years of pain, suffering, and pretending! There's not much here that is worth keeping," Ryder shot back, his harsh words hitting her like a dagger.
"Oh my God!" She exclaimed in disbelief.
What was he talking about? They were a happy couple. They were lucky to have a wonderful daughter. They were truly happy together! They had always been happy. So why is he saying these things now?
"You can't mean that," she said, shaking her head a lot. "You're just angry at something and you want to make me feel angry too. You don't really mean what you're saying. I..."
"Oh come on, Avery! You're being really annoying right now! This marriage feels like a big joke, and I am tired of it!" he shouted.
"This is supposed to be for better or for worse! That's what we promised! You can't just leave like this!" she shouted back, feeling upset.
"Yes, I can, and I will. Let's not drag this out any longer. Besides, I..."
Suddenly, his phone rang. He smiled a little when he looked at the screen. She immediately knew who was calling. But deep down, she hoped he wouldn't answer; that was the last thing she wanted to see.
"Hey baby," Ryder said sweetly into the phone.
Avery felt her heart drop. She recognized that voice. It was the same nice voice he used when they first started dating. But now, it was being used for someone else. The realization hit her hard.
"I'll be there soon. Just let me take care of something first and then I'll come right over," he said before ending the call. The smile on his face didn't go away.
Then it really hit her. "It's because of her, isn't it? You are throwing away everything we have because of her!" she exclaimed in disbelief.
He didn't say anything back. He just shrugged his shoulders, acting like he didn't care that what he was doing was hurting her feelings.
"Who is she?" she asked, her voice shaking and full of pain.
"Who is who?" he asked her, his brows raised as if he was genuinely confused. And she knew he was pretending.
"You know who I'm talking about. Who's the bitch you're leaving me for?" Her voice had wavered with hurt and anger.
She could still feel the terror as he lunged toward her, faster than she could react. His hands around her neck made her gasp for air. "One, you don't call her names. Secondly, it's none of your business," he had said coldly.
She tried to break free. "You're hurting me!" she shouted, panic rising as she hit his hands in desperation. Then he let her go, and she fell to the ground.
"Sign the goddamn papers," he told her, dismissing her pain. Those words echoed in her mind like a haunting echo of the past.
PRESENT
Avery shook her head, trying to dismiss those thoughts as she finished packing. Taking a deep breath, she knew she couldn't stay in this house any longer. Every corner was filled with reminders of their life together, but now it was just too painful to bear. She needed to leave and find a new beginning.
"Baby? Are you ready?" she called out, her voice shaky but filled with determination.
Lucy hurried down the stairs, her teddy bear trailing behind her on the floor. "Yes, Mommy!" she exclaimed cheerfully, a big smile on her face. But then she paused and looked around the room, her expression changing. "Where's Daddy?" she asked, her small voice filled with innocent curiosity.
Avery's heart sank as she heard the question. She tried to swallow the lump in her throat and blinked back the tears that threatened to fall. "He's very busy with work right now," she said gently, doing her best to sound calm and reassuring. "But don't worry, he will join us later." She hoped that Lucy would not ask more questions.
*******
After saying goodbye to their old home, Avery and Lucy traveled to Avery's hometown in Barbados. As soon as they arrived, Avery felt a wave of mixed emotions. She felt so broken inside, and her heart ached with sadness. The warm sun shone down on her, and she could hear the soothing sound of the waves crashing gently on the shore. The beautiful surroundings reminded her of happier times from her past, when everything seemed much simpler and more joyful.
But even though the place was lovely, she couldn't shake off the pain inside her. It was like a heavy storm cloud that followed her, no matter how bright the day was. No matter how much she wanted to focus on the beauty around her, the hurt from her marriage kept creeping into her thoughts. She felt like she was starting all over again, back to square one in her life.
