Chapter 1 Prologue

It's so great to find one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life!'

...........................

"We are almost there. Get ready!", said her dad, driving through the open gate with a welcome poster on it.

Kate looked up closing her diary. The place was beautiful and contemporary. It was a busy, bustling place with students walking all around the campus.

Few students sat on the green meadow and continued chatting and doing their work. Kate looked around to make sure that she doesn't feel new to this place. Kate looked down at her right broken arm with a cast, which had a long story to tell. Her dad assured her that she will be alright and he made her believe that this place will change her future for sure. Kate removed her earphones and put those into the backpack along with her diary.

Her dad parked the car in front of the girls dormitory and unloaded the trunk. Kate was hesitant to step out of the car and move towards her new life. Fear and anxiety about this new place was holding her back. She sat in the car looking around the new place through the window.

"Come on, kate! Get down. We are late already! You have classes to attend for the rest of the day", insisted Mr. Williams, Kate's father. He was right, they have arrived very late at the university by 12 noon.

Kate joined the university a bit late, that is, she was given admission here only after two weeks of the beginning of the semester. So, she thought it might be hard to know people since they would have known one another better before the time, she came here.

But, Kate hasn't come in the motive of making friends. She came here on her father's compulsion. Her father persuaded her in learning at the Howard University for the next 4 years of her life and made sure all the necessary arrangements was ready for her. She had no other choice than to accept her father's decision, because he was right, she needed a change in life.

"So, my room number is 27?? And I have 2 more roommates to accompany me?!", she asked her dad doubtfully looking at the key he gave her, that he got from the office block of the university.

"Yes, and don't worry. You are going to be fine and amazing. You will rock this place for sure", Mr. Williams encouraged her and gave her a brief hug before telling her goodbye.

Kate had so many unanswered questions floating inside her head. She doesn't know if her roommates will talk to her or even consider her and accept her as their new roommate. She wasn't sure if she could survive here in this new place.

She opened her room and stepped inside to find a compact sized room with three cots and three shelves in it. The right corner of the room was left empty for her accommodate. She pushed her cases and trolley towards her shelf. She closed the door and looked around her new home.

The room smelled of rosemary oil and vanilla, the place was tidy and well lit. The left corner of the wall was decorated with posters of singers like Taylor swift, Justin bieber, selena gomez and posters of group of boys who were fair and unrecognizable. Kate wondered who it might be. Kate was curious to meet this person who fantasized singers and she must be a lover of all kinds of music.

In the middle of the room, the shelf nearest to the second cot was filled with all kinds of fantasy books, from Harry Potter to Percy Jackson. Kate was sure that her second roommate has to be a bookworm who enjoyed reading all sorts of fantasy novels. She was tired and wanted some rest. She took out her diary to fill it up details she has got so far. Her diary is the only thing that kate shows her true emotions to. She made it as habit to write diary for the past 2 years.

Dear D,

It's my first day in room 27. I feel excited and worried at the same time. The reason is that I'm highly excited and happy to meet new people but I'm not sure if I would be able to connect with them for good. I'm here after two weeks and the classes have already began. I knew no one in the university and I don't know a single soul to rely upon in the new place. I'm not sure on how I'm going to survive in this new place for the rest of the days. On entering the room, I found out that I have two roommates that I'm about to meet. I hope they are two interesting people.

She dozed off writing her diary.

Elodie took a deep breath and knocked, the sound echoing in the quiet corridor. A moment of silence passed, broken only by the pounding of her heart. Finally, the door snicked open, revealing a surprised Dashiell. 'Can't you see the Do Not Disturb sign? We don't want-' His initial frown quickly morphed into confusion at the sight of his wife. 'What are you doing here?' he demanded. 'Your girlfriend invited me,' Elodie replied, her voice laced with icy calm. She tried to peer past him, but his broad frame blocked the view. A saccharine voice chimed in from within the room. 'Elodie? Oh dear, we didn't mean for you to find out this way. It's just that-' Elodie cut her short. 'Oh please, Selene. Spare me the fake apologies. You wouldn't have sent me all those texts if you didn't want me to know.' Dashiell shifted uncomfortably, his face a mask of annoyance. 'What texts?' Elodie stepped past him, taking in the luxurious suite with a sardonic smile. The king-sized bed, the scattered rose petals, the lingering scent of sex – it all painted a vivid picture of their betrayal. She looked up at Dashiell, her gaze unwavering. 'I want a divorce.' ****** Dashiell lived a life of luxury, surrounded by the best things money could buy. But when a car accident left him vulnerable, he met Elodie, a seemingly ordinary woman who nursed him back to health. Mistaking her for just another employee, Dashiell entered into a loveless marriage with her solely for convenience. However, fate had a different script in store. Elodie, the 'ordinary nurse,' held a secret more precious than any diamond: she was the sole heiress to Northstar, a vast and powerful enterprise. Unaware of her true identity, Dashiell cast her aside when his ex-girlfriend returned, leaving Elodie humiliated. But Elodie was not one to be easily broken. She shed the facade of the meek nurse, reclaiming her rightful inheritance and stepping into the role of Northstar's CEO. Now, the woman Dashiell discarded was the one holding the reins of power. As Elodie thrives in her new role, Dashiell is consumed by regret. He finally sees Elodie for the extraordinary woman she truly is, realising the depth of his mistake. But will his remorse be enough to win back the heart he so carelessly discarded?
