Whispers Beneath the Veil When a daring young woman steals a forbidden book, she doesn't realize she's just bound herself to a man with dangerous power, a haunted past, and secrets older than time. He's the predator. She's the spark. Together, they might ignite the end of two worlds.

Chapter 1 The Steal

The city of Eldermorn was a place of contradictions-an ancient city veiled by the veil of time itself, yet buzzing with the pulse of modern life. Skyscrapers brushed the clouds while hidden among them were centuries-old buildings, their walls thick with secrets. The air itself seemed to hum with energy, as if the buildings themselves held whispers of a forgotten world.

Dorian Vellor stood in his office on the top floor of a high-rise, gazing out at the sprawling skyline. The sun had just dipped below the horizon, leaving the city bathed in shades of purple and gold. He was a man who had seen more than most could ever dream-or fear-and his blue eyes reflected it. He was a guardian of ancient knowledge, a keeper of dangerous truths that most of the world would never comprehend.

His family's bloodline stretched back millennia, and it had come with burdens. Those burdens weighed on him, and every day, he felt the constant pull of responsibilities-responsibilities that didn't leave room for distractions. But then she came.

Ava Myles wasn't supposed to be a distraction. She was just another thief, one of many who frequented the underground markets, seeking forbidden knowledge for personal gain. He had known about the black market of rare books and arcane texts for years, but this was different. This was a girl with an undeniable, reckless spirit that made her stand out.

Dorian's piercing gaze narrowed as he watched her from the shadows of the hidden chambers of his estate. Ava had no idea he had been watching her for days, tracking her movements, observing her every choice. She had been trying to steal something that belonged to him-the ancient book on runes and forgotten languages.

Ava crept along the shelves, her eyes darting over each row of tomes. Her breath came in quick, quiet gasps. She was good at this. Very good. But there was a hesitation, a tremor in her fingers as she reached for the book on the third shelf. Dorian watched as she brushed her thumb over the intricate symbols embossed on the cover of the runic text, a faint recognition flashing in her eyes. It was a book of immense power-one that could reshape the balance between worlds.

She didn't know what she was dealing with.

His lips curled into a barely perceptible smirk. Foolish girl, he thought.

Ava's hand gripped the spine of the book, pulling it slowly from the shelf. The moment her fingers made contact with the ancient text, a pulse of energy rippled through the air, a subtle, but unmistakable force. It caught her off guard. Her eyes widened in surprise.

Dorian had seen enough. He stepped forward, his presence filling the room like a storm gathering on the horizon. "I wouldn't do that if I were you," his deep voice cut through the silence like a blade.

Ava froze, her heart hammering in her chest. She spun around, her grey eyes locking with his. The force of his gaze made her blood run cold, but it was something else that caught her off guard-a raw, primal energy that seemed to bleed into the very air around him.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Dorian's intense gaze didn't waver, studying her every move, every inch of her. She looked... young. But there was something in the way she stood, in the quiet defiance behind her eyes, that told him she was no ordinary thief.

Ava took a slow, cautious step back. "I didn't mean any harm," she said, her voice shaking, but she quickly regained control. "I just-"

"I know exactly what you were trying to do," Dorian interrupted, his voice colder than the steel of his gaze. "Steal from me. Take what doesn't belong to you."

Her breath caught in her throat. "I... wasn't going to steal it forever," she said, trying to defend herself, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her nervousness. "I just needed to look at it."

Dorian's lips twitched with the faintest amusement. "Needed to look at it?" He took a step toward her, his presence like an immovable force. "Do you know what you're holding?"

Ava's eyes flicked down to the book in her hands. She didn't. Not really. But she had felt the strange energy pulsing through the pages, the weight of the runes vibrating with power she couldn't explain.

"I..." She hesitated, unsure of what she had gotten herself into. "No. I don't."

Dorian stood before her now, towering over her with a presence that was almost suffocating. "This book," he said softly, "is not just a book. It's a doorway. To a world you're not ready for."

Ava swallowed hard. "A doorway to what?"

His blue eyes narrowed slightly, and he took the book from her hands with a swift, almost imperceptible movement. The air between them hummed as the weight of his touch settled into the pages, the book closing on its own as if it was a living thing. "To power," he said. "To magic. To a world that exists beyond the veil."

Ava blinked. "The veil?" She was confused, caught between disbelief and awe.

Dorian's gaze softened for just a fraction of a second, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "You're a thief, Ava Myles. But you're also something more." He paused, his gaze locking onto hers. "What are you really after?"

Ava could feel her pulse quicken. The question struck her deeper than she expected. She wasn't sure what she was after, not exactly. But something about this moment-about him-pulled her in.

"I don't know," she admitted quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dorian studied her for a moment longer before his lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. "Well, you're about to find out."
