Chapter 1

The disaster of zombies broke out, and I was bitten to death by a zombie because of a self-heating hotpot. Then, I was reborn a week before the outbreak.

After I stocked up on supplies, I discovered a shocking secret.

I was the first zombie in the apocalypse.

1.

"Ring, ring-"

As the alarm clock went off, I sat up abruptly in bed.

My chest heaved, and the gruesome face of a zombie seemed to linger before my eyes.

"Miss, it is now 8:20 AM on September 12, 2041. Today's weather is as follows. The highest temperature is 36 degrees Celsius, and the lowest is 30 degrees Celsius..."

Listening to the smart broadcast from my AI assistant, I realized that I had been reborn!

The last zombie disaster broke out on October 3, during the long holiday.

My parents took a trip while I stayed at home, as I never preferred going out.

In my previous life, I didn't have any food reserves, so I was starving not long after the outbreak.

So I went out to find food. But a self-heating hotpot fell and made a noise, attracting many zombies. Later, they bit me to death.

Looking at the sun out of the window, I lay back down in bed.

In less than three seconds, I sat up again.

There were still twenty-three days until the zombie disaster outbreak, and this time, I had known everything before it happened. I must stockpile enough supplies for five years so that I could live well after the zombies appeared.

I searched online for essential living supplies and noted them all in my memo.

Just as I was jotting them down, there was a knock on the door.

"Estelle Parker, what time do you think it is? Are you going to go to work? Will you get the salary of 3, 800 dollars or not?" My mom started knocking on the door to my room as I hadn't gotten up for a long time.

Thanks to my mother for reminding me that I have to go to work. Otherwise, I would have forgotten it.

"I'm not going. The monthly salary of 3, 800 dollars isn't enough to cover my expenses. I am so exhausted, like running a marathon. I plan to rely on you and Dad," I replied to my mom.

I was serious. The zombie disaster was about to break out. Why was I still going to work?

Besides, our family didn't lack the little money I earned. My monthly salary wasn't even as much as my mom lost in one night of poker.

My mom was silent at the door for a moment and said, "Get up in one minute and go to work. Otherwise, I'll block your bank account. Even though we have money, it doesn't mean you can squander it."

In one minute, I crawled out of bed to have breakfast. I didn't even have much time to freshen up.

After all, my mom always meant what she said. If she really blocked my bank account, I wouldn't even have money to pay the petrol fee for my Maybach. That would be too embarrassing.

The moment my mom saw me, she started nagging again. "Look at your face. You stayed up late, and you look gray. You look like a zombie that eats human beings."

I silently had breakfast without speaking.

But I thought, "Mom, I was indeed a zombie that ate human beings in my previous life. And I didn't eat the alive but the dead.

After breakfast, my mom sat on the sofa watching TV.

I didn't see my dad, so I asked, "Where's Dad?"

My mom glanced at me and said, "It's Wednesday today. Where else do you think your dad would be besides the company?"

My mom was on the verge of anger, so I dared not speak.

My mom was like the king of our family. My dad and I had no freedom of speech, mainly because my mom was authoritarian and not open to advice.

Then I took the car key and dawdled out of the door.

3, 800 dollars was still money, even though it was not much.

At the door, I was unwilling to give up and asked, "Dear Mom, can't I just stay home and rely on you?"

My mom watched TV without even glancing at me. She said, "If you don't leave now, you'll be late and won't even get the 3, 800 dollars."

I pouted and said, "Mom, you're too harsh. I seriously doubt if I'm really your daughter."

My mom snorted, "You're not. Give back all the money your dad and I spent on you over the years, and go to find your parents."

Alright. I had to face the reality.

I had 5, 135, 800 dollars in my bank account given by my dad, but I'd have to work for a mere 3, 800 dollars.

It was ridiculously absurd.

2.

Although I promised my mom to go to work, it was different from the past.

The apocalypse was coming soon. How would I still care about my work?

In the face of life and death, I had to survive, although I had to say sorry to my mom.

I had to survive. Moreover, I had to help my family survive.

My parents had a lot of money and more than one house.

Thanks to my parents, I was born with a silver spoon.

If I were to write an autobiography, the title should be "How a Rich Young Woman Thrives in the Apocalypse."

I first went to see a house we have in the suburbs. It was a standalone villa with five floors, including a basement. There was a garage of eighty square meters.

In the apocalypse, besides supplies, protection was crucial.

After inspecting the house and finding it feasible, I hired some workers to reinforce it.

The wall had been two meters high and was reinforced to six meters with concrete. The outermost layer was covered with three centimeters of iron sheet.

Iron conducts electricity quickly and can be electrified.

From the wall top to the roof, everything was fitted with double-layer bulletproof glass. No weapon would ruin it, let alone human beings.

At the gate and four corners of the wall, I installed surveillance and pinhole cameras to ensure I could see everything happening outside from inside the house.

I replaced all the ordinary glass in the villa with double-layer bulletproof glass and drilled a well on the lawn on the first floor.

The water and electricity were cut off a few days after the zombie disaster outbreak. Oh, I also needed solar panels and a generator.

Fortunately, when the villa was decorated, my parents used all soundproof materials as they hated noise.

The leading worker scrutinized me at least ten times before he finally agreed to do the job, only after I assured him repeatedly that I wouldn't do anything illegal and promised him five times their usual pay.

Indeed, money talks.

Being well-paid, the workers finished the reinforcement work in just ten days.

Of course, I wasn't idle during those ten days. I was constantly buying things.

Every day, my mom and I brought gold home.

After the zombie disaster outbreak, cash quickly lost its value. If I didn't use the cash now, there would be even less chance to use it after the zombie disaster happened.

I couldn't exactly bribe a zombie with cash, anyway.

Zombies didn't care if you had cash or not. They only ate.

Fortunately, gold had always been valuable. I persuaded my mom to stockpile a considerable amount.

At the beginning, she didn't want to. She thought gold was too tacky, as wealthy people usually go for diamonds and luxury watches.

But I persuaded her smartly. "Gold appreciates in value. Haven't you heard that some people lost everything on diamonds or luxury watches? You don't want to be penniless in your old age, do you?"

I had it all planned out. After the apocalypse ended, we could sell the gold and be wealthy again.

A reliable car was essential for the apocalypse. We could run over zombies by driving the car at least.

So I went to the dealer's store and bought two SUVs, filled them up with gas, and parked them in the garage of the villa in the suburbs.

I needed to stockpile enough supplies for five years. After all, in my previous life, I died too early to know when the apocalypse would end.

I bought 500 bottles of mineral water, 300 boxes of toilet paper, 80 boxes of sanitary pads, 50 sets of shampoo and other toiletries, 700 eggs, 300 pounds of pork, 200 pounds of lamb, 500 pounds of beef, and 200 kilograms of various snacks like compressed biscuits...

I also got 50 bags of flour, 100 bottles of cooking oil, 80 bags of rice, and 40 bags of mixed grains.

I converted the basement into a cold storage room. Fresh meat and vegetables were stored there.

However, it was difficult to keep vegetables well. So to ensure we have fresh ones during the apocalypse, I bought fifty packs of vegetable seeds.

Once everything was nearly ready, I told the truth to my parents.

3.

"You spent twenty million on these things?" my mom asked and glared at me.

I nodded. "Dad, Mom, you have to trust me. I really came back from the apocalypse. In my previous life, I was bitten to death by zombies. You have no idea how painful it is to be bitten by a zombie..."

My mom was skeptical, but my dad believed my words completely.

He was always an overprotective dad and believed whatever I said. "My poor darling," my dad said. Then he glanced at my mom. "Actually, Estelle isn't wrong. I was planning to take you during the long holiday."

While my dad was persuading my mom, my phone rang.

It was Nathan Higgins, my boyfriend when I was at college. We had a five-year relationship.

I glanced at my parents, stood up, and went outside to answer the call. "Hello."

We had broken up six months ago.

Although he was an orphan, my parents never looked down upon him. They didn't care whether he had a house or a car.

After all, our family was rich. He could get married and stay with us.

But Nathan didn't see it that way. He wanted to earn enough money before getting married to me.

I was baffled. Wasn't he going to get married to me and stay with my family anyway?

I tried to persuade him several times, but he wouldn't listen to me. In a fit of anger, I broke up with him, and he agreed. So we were not seeing each other then.

"Estelle, listen to me. Find a place with fewer people and buy as much food and supplies as you can. Make sure you have enough for you and your parents for one year." Nathan sounded serious and seemed to have already known the zombie disaster was about to break out.

In my previous life, Nathan had called me, too. But I had blocked his number and missed his call. This time, I unblocked him after I was reborn.

"What happened?" I asked.

"I'm not very clear. I only know that a friend of mine at a research institute in Sanctoria said that a virus from Altheria's research lab had leaked. It's spreading rapidly, similar to... zombies." Nathan's tone grew heavy as he talked about it.

I asked where he was, but he hesitated and wouldn't answer my question directly.

"Do you remember where my house is? Come and meet me tomorrow, or I'll kill myself." With that, I hung up before he could respond.

Of course, I wouldn't commit suicide. I just want him to go over to my place.

I was sure I could let him do as I said.

When I returned to the living room, my dad had successfully convinced my mom.

The three of us looked at one another.

"Are the supplies sufficient?" my mom asked.

I nodded and said, "Yes."

In the afternoon, I took them to see the supplies I had stockpiled.

"These are all frozen meats. They won't last five years," my mom remarked while looking at the meat I had stored. "You and your dad clear out the fourth floor. I'll go and buy some chicks and rabbits. They reproduce quickly and will ensure we have fresh meat."

My dad jokingly saluted my mom with a serious expression and said, "Yes, Madam."

My mom was amused and chuckled. "You're always so unserious."

After that, my dad asked me, "When you took the supplies back, did anyone see you? What did you tell the wholesalers who sold you this stuff?"

In the apocalypse, you couldn't trust others easily.

I had experienced it and was particularly cautious when doing those things. "I chose weekdays to take everything back. So not many people saw me. There were a total of about five of them. I went to more than ten wholesale markets and bought a little from each. Sometimes I told the sellers that I wanted to open a small supermarket, and other times I said I was donating to impoverished areas."

My dad said with a smile, "You are so smart. You are just my daughter."

My mom rolled her eyes but said nothing.
