The nanny changed my college application to the one closest to home, but I caught it in time and changed it back. I confronted her, but she was smug. "I am your real mother!!! Of course I have the right to change your application. If it weren't for me swapping children back then, would you be living such a good life now?" But when I threw the paternity report in her face, she was stunned. Because it showed that I was not her child. And beside her, her biological daughter, who had been abused for eighteen years, was filled with intense hatred.

Chapter 1

The servant, Mollie Padilla, changed my choice in my college application form to one college near my home. But I discovered it in time and changed it back.

When I confronted her with it, she said smugly, "I'm your mother! Of course, I am entitled to change your choice. If I hadn't switched you at birth, you wouldn't be living a good life like this."

But when I showed the parentage report, she was shocked because it indicated that I wasn't her daughter. Meanwhile, her daughter, Willa Padilla, who had suffered eighteen years of mistreatment from Mollie, glared at Mollie with intense hatred.

1

Before confirming my choice of college application, I checked it on the computer again to ensure my choices hadn't been altered.

As soon as I opened it, I was dumbfounded. My first choice had been changed to a nearby, less reputable one.

I hadn't even considered applying for it.

I quickly corrected it and was only relieved after I submitted it.

I asked my parents about it, as only they could use the computer at home besides me.

They shook their heads and told me that they didn't do it. And then they suggested I check the surveillance footage.

They were busy and hung up the phone after we talked for a short moment.

I remembered Willa Padilla, Mollie's daughter, and called her over to ask if she had tampered with my choice of college application on my computer.

She scoffed and told me that she disdained to do such a thing.

I believed her words, according to her personality.

She suggested that someone might have disliked me as I was too arrogant and secretly changed my choices.

I checked the surveillance footage and discovered it was Mollie who had entered my room and altered my choices.

I was furious and called her in.

She had worked as a servant in our family for years. Both my parents and I trusted her. But she actually did such a thing to us. Her behavior was heartbreaking to us.

She entered with a smile and asked what I needed. When I showed her the footage, she panicked.

She tried to defend herself, saying, "I just thought the college you chose was too far from home and wanted you closer." Anyway, a degree isn't much useful to you. You'll inherit the family business after graduation."

She said that I didn't need to work so hard, and she felt sorry for me when she saw me like that.

I interrupted her and suggested she focus more on Willa rather than wasting her maternal affection on me, although she didn't have much of it.

She grew increasingly anxious after I threatened to report her to the police. She revealed a long-hidden secret in panic. "I'm your mother and will never harm you."

I was stunned and couldn't understand what she was talking about.

I stood up, approached her, and asked what was going on. If she was my mother, then who were my current parents?

She whispered in my ear and told me the story.

Years ago, she and my mother gave birth at the same time, and she secretly swapped the babies when no one was watching. So Willa, who she raised, was the true daughter of the White family.

I couldn't believe her words. If it were true, I had unjustly occupied Willa's place for years.

Yet, Mollie was smug after she had done everything.

She thought I should be grateful to her and that no one else knew about that matter. In her eyes, if she hadn't swapped me and Willa, I wouldn't have had the good life I had then.

Her words sent chills down my spine. I pushed her away and ran out of the room.

After I got out, I encountered Willa. She was standing at the door and had been listening to the conversation between Mollie and me.

She didn't seem to hear anything and was shocked to see me out.

After I left, she entered the room, where she faced harsh words from Mollie.

I finally understood why Mollie treated Willa poorly but was so kind to me.

The truth was absurd and ridiculous.

I had to talk to my parents and verify it.

2

If it were true, I would willingly give up my position and do my best to make amends to Willa. I felt guilty in front of her.

After my parents received my call and heard that I had something urgent, they waited for me in their office.

They saw me breathless from rushing and asked what was so urgent.

They offered me something to eat and drink and put them before me.

I asked if I was their daughter. They laughed and said I was being silly. Then they confirmed that I was. I said, "But Mollie said I was her daughter and that she swapped me with your daughter."

My father suddenly understood the situation. He would have nearly forgotten that incident if no one had mentioned it.

Indeed, Mollie had swapped the babies back then. Perhaps she thought that reality was like a melodrama.

But my parents wouldn't leave their daughter solely in just one servant's care. Their house was equipped with surveillance, and they discovered what she had done immediately.

They secretly called Mollie away and swapped the babies back.

My father then added in the end, "We never told Mollie about that. We wanted to see how she treated her daughter."

I watched my parents' cunning smiles and breathed a sigh of relief. Of course, my parents wouldn't be easily fooled as they had been in the business world for years.

Mollie couldn't outsmart them. But I wondered what her reaction would be if she knew she had mistreated her daughter for over a decade.

Though I trusted my parents, I was still uneasy. So I took them for a DNA test. The results confirmed that I was their daughter, and I was finally relieved.

We returned home that evening and pretended that nothing had happened. Mollie watched us nervously, but when she noticed nothing occurred, she calmed down.

As I returned to my room, Willa entered and asked what had happened in the day.

She wanted to know whether Mollie had secretly changed my choice of college application.

I nodded and told her that Mollie didn't want me to go to a college far from home, which was likely an excuse.

Willa apologized on behalf of Mollie.

I waved my hand and told her that she didn't have to do that.

The next morning, my father brought up the event that my choice of college application was changed. He directly blamed Mollie. "You went too far. You've worked in our home for years and always followed the rules. But you dared to meddle with my daughter's choices. Have we been too kind to you? So you forgot your role here? You're just an employee in our house, not the owner," my father said.

He suggested that she might not be suitable to work for us anymore and was considering firing her.

She cried and defended herself. Then she got down on her knees desperately before my mother and asked my mother for help.

My mother was kind-hearted, so she interceded on Mollie's behalf, and my father agreed to cut her pay for two months but allowed her to stay.

My parents messaged me and asked how their performance was and whether it was seamless.

"Do you think we could win an Oscar for our performance?" they joked.

I chuckled and sent them a thumbs-up to show my agreement.

Although they were adults, they still acted like children.

Willa left before she finished her meal. Mollie went after her, and they started arguing outside.

My parents and I ran to the window to watch the drama unfold.

One reason why my parents didn't fire Mollie was that they were interested in the story between Mollie and Willa.

After my parents left for work, while I was packing my stuff, Mollie handed me many things and let me take them with me.

She complained to me that if it weren't for me, she wouldn't have suffered such humiliation that day.

"But I vented my anger on Willa, so I'm not angry anymore," she said.

I smirked slightly. If she knew Willa, whom she had been mistreating, was her daughter, she'd be devastated.

3

Willa returned from work in the afternoon, and then she sneaked out alone. After she came back in the evening, she knocked on my door.

She seemed drunk and asked if she could talk to me for a while. She wanted to talk but didn't know who to confide in.

I took her to the rooftop to enjoy the breeze.

She drank some more red wine. Loosened up by the wine, she shared a lot with me.

She said that she had been living with her grandparents since she could remember. She had no idea what her parents looked like back then.

Mollie and her husband had never visited Willa.

It wasn't until the day her grandparents passed away that she met her parents for the first time. They brought along with them a little boy.

The boy was dressed decently, in stark contrast to her.

Later, she learned that the boy was her younger brother.

Mollie took Willa home, but Willa always felt like an outsider as she never fit in.

Every morning, they had breakfast without her. The other family members were busy with their work or school.

She only watched them.

Eventually, she mustered the courage to ask Mollie if she could go to school.

Mollie then remembered her and asked her age.

She received an education at school for a few years. But then Mollie divorced her husband, who took their son with him. So only Willa was left with Mollie.

In fact, Mollie didn't want to keep Willa either. It was a court mandate that they couldn't abandon Willa.

Willa had thought that she could finally have her mother's love after her brother left. But she was wrong.

Mollie never loved her.

Mollie forced Willa to drop out of school and to make money.

They sold the apartment, and Mollie said they couldn't use the money, which must be saved for Willa's brother's future.

Willa followed Mollie to move into my parents' house.

My parents arranged a nice room for Willa.

Willa told me that it was her first bedroom. When she lived with her brother, she slept on the couch in the living room.

Now, she had to hand over half of her earnings to Willa, who saved it for her brother.

She also shared that her boss at work tried to take advantage of her. If she refused him, she would be fired.

She lost several jobs like that.

So she finally had a job, and she didn't want to lose it again.

She wanted to save enough money to move out so that she would run away from Willa's control. She dreamed of a better future.

I hugged her and felt heartbroken for her plight.

We drank until the next day. When my parents found us, they took us back to our rooms.

After my parents gave me some hangover soup, they exchanged glances. They were surprised at the fact that Willa and I had become so close. How could we drink and dream of the future together?

My mother chuckled and said it wasn't a bad thing.

After I woke up, Willa was still asleep. I called over Mollie, saying, "You'd better be good to Willa. Don't wait until it's too late to realize your mistakes. Even if you want to make amends, it would be too late. This is my advice to you."

Mollie was puzzled and asked what Willa had told me the previous night. But I didn't say anything.

In my view, she wasn't worthy of knowing it.

On the day I went to school, Willa came to see me off.

"Work hard, my friend," she said.

I smiled. From that day on, we became friends.

At college, whenever I saw a beautiful scene, I'd take a photo to share with her. If I liked someone, I would tell her too.

Mollie brought me many things behind Willa's back, including items from her hometown.

Mollie even sneaked to campus to see me one day.

When my classmates asked who she was, I said something that hurt her deeply. "She's a servant from my home. Probably my parents asked her to check on me, and she will report to them after she goes back."

She set many rules for me. She even wanted to interfere in my relationships.

I became more and more annoyed.

One day, when she visited me, Willa discovered it.

That day, Willa happened to be visiting me too. After she saw Mollie secretly giving me money, Willa quarreled with Mollie.

When I returned home, Willa asked me about the relationship between Mollie and me.

My parents were both at home.

Mollie stopped Willa and said that she had no relationship with me and asked Willa not to be suspicious.

Willa asked if she was indeed Mollie's mother and if she was the daughter of my parents.

Mollie was obviously nervous, and Willa caught her in a lie.

Willa looked at my parents, cried, and tried to get close to them. "Mom, you're my mother. She switched me with Lisa when we were born. I'm your daughter."

Willa presented a lot of evidence, which included the fact that Mollie was secretly kind to me and some chat records where Willa claimed that I was her daughter.

My mother avoided Willa's touch and sighed. She said that since everything was out in the open, the farce should come to an end.
