Chapter 1 The Reunion

There was gentle humming of the small café located close to the sea shore. In big glass windows natural light was coming in and spread warm light on wooden tables. There was the beautiful aroma of coffee and baked stuff that eased Laurel's tension as she huffed nervously adjusting her scarf.More than a year passed by the time she met Isaiah and Kayden again, and just the idea of meeting them now sent her heart Palpitating. So much had changed, time and distance made spaces that Laurel knew they would not be able to close. She looked at the door once more, fighting to hold onto her cup tightly.

Would they look the same? Would it feel the same as when they were kids?

The bell that hung over the door rang, and her breath hitched.Isaiah entered first, he was tall and walking through the door while it was still possible to see shreds the sunlight had not been totally shut out. His jealously guarded black eyes roamed over the common room before returning to rest on her. Behind him, there trailed a figure dressed in black, whose sense of self-assurance – typical for Kayden – was rather diminished.Laurel rooted herself on the spot and wondered whether she should do the waving- smile – run drill. However, there was no chance for her to do so, for Kayden smiled suddenly and approached her in few steps."Laurie!" He hugged her as so tight and Laurel closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth and the sweet musky perfume smell brewing from him.Surprised she laughed softly at the nickname he had for her all these years, which warmed a part of her that she never really knew existed.

"Hey, Kayden.""It seems like a lifetime," he told her and pulled her back by the shoulders to look into her eyes, gripping her shoulders as if making sure she existed. "You look... different. But good. Like, really good.""Thanks," she said her cheeks getting red. She looked round at Isaiah who stood behind her, leaning against the door, with his hands in the pockets of his trousers.

"Isaiah," she said softly."Hi," he answered her, his tone low pitched than before she knew him. Then they only stared at each other, and silence saying more between them. Then, to her relief, the man unstiffened and hugged her briefly, but it felt warm nonetheless.

He said, "It's good to see you," his voice as low as before."You too," she answered, her voice became tight. They all took their seats, and hesitation continued even for a few seconds as all of them remained silent.

Kayden snapped it with a theatrical long-drawn breath."Alright, I know this is going to sound weird, right?" he replied as he tilted his chair back. "Let's just admit it."Sure enough, Laurel couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah, it's weird."But a good weird," he added quickly. "And that like... finally sees your best friend after a million years type of weird."She returned the smile and for the first time she let her shoulders drop.

"Yeah. That kind of weird."Isaiah smiled weakly at her and nodded his head while his fingers coiled tightly around the cup of coffee. "So, London," he said. "How was it?"Running through mind, she couldn't for the life of her figure out how to encapsulate a year of her life into a few words. "It was... passionated," she said finally. It was quite fun at the same time also little bit difficult at times. I learned a lot, though. About art. About myself."Kayden raised an eyebrow. "About yourself, huh? That sounds mysterious.""No, it isn't," she laughed. "I just meant it gave me a wake up call of how much I am missing my home." And you guys."

The smug expression in the corner further egging him on slowly faded away. "We missed you too. And, 'Well, it was not the same without you.'Isaiah nodded. "He's right. We thought about you a lot."He spoke suddenly and sincerely, stating his observations before Laurel sensed that it might be true she did love him. She had never imagined she could need that so much after hearing it.Kayden looked at her softly, smiled and said 'You're welcome Laurie' she just replied softly and almost too low for him to hear. I own up, I thought about you guys too. A lot."
