June Elliott, a seventeen year old orphan, goes from being a prisoner in an orphanage to becoming the fated mate of the famous twin Alphas of Redmoon, the largest wealthiest pack in Northern Vetany. June is confronted by the difficulties of having two Alphas as mates, and whilst she's occupied with turning her messy love life into an enviable one, her ugly past comes knocking at her door. June realises that the only way to overcome her past is to face it. But what if defeating this great enemy could bring her back to where she began. No mates. No wolf. No divine powers. No family. Just a weak omega trapped in a dark hole.
June's POV
"June Scott. You are next!" The words that followed my name made my throbbing heart almost jump out of its place.
My eyes slowly shifted to my sister who was now in tears. "I'm not letting you go, June." she held onto my hands like it was her life-bag. "I'm never letting you pass through that door." She cried.
I lacked words to comfort her. I had always known this day would come. But what I didn't know was that it was closer than I thought. For years I have watched older she wolves disappear strangely after they are called like I am now.
No one knows what happens to them in that room or where they go after there. Well, no one except the orphanage master Mr. Fred and his fat wife.
I gripped my sister's hands as my tears crawled down my cheeks, my heart aching from the thought of never seeing her pretty face anymore. I was leaving her to fend for herself in this harsh and wicked world. We've always looked out for each other. Hoping that one day we would walk out of this hell of an orphanage together and never look back.
Jossy and I were the only survivors of the 2001 Bloodstone Pack Massacre. My mum had hidden us in a hole in the forest promising she would come back when the war was over. It's twelve years now. She never came back and we ended up in a locked building far away from the city. Years had passed and I was yet to know how it felt to be outside these walls. Fresh breeze grazing my skin was an alien experience to me.
Sometimes, I doubted if this was an orphanage. All we saw were strange scary faced men who came in every month and browsed our faces and left. Afterward, a she wolf would be called and she'd never be seen or heard of again.
"COME HERE GIRL!" Madame's loud voice got me jumping on my feet and Jossy's shaky hands freed mine as my trembling feet walked toward the white-haired woman.
Mrs Catherine Fred preferred we call her Madame. Calling her by her real name puts you on the list of the next she-wolf to disappear.
"June." Jossy's soft voice called out as the door closed behind me.
"Follow me." Madame said, and I obeyed her. Blue lights shined into my eyes, and for a second, I thought we were in another world.
As I slowly opened my eyes, allowing them to get used to the heavy shining light. I noticed the many doors that lined up by the sides of each hallway we walked in, making it hard to identify the one we came out from. We passed through doors which led to other hallways like it was an endless path, and I wondered what happened behind the closed doors.
No she-wolf had ever left the green-house except they were called. All we needed was in there. Bathrooms and Toilets. A large kitchen that could accommodate fifty she wolves cooking at a time, and a hall that contained 300 beds. Even though the she wolves in the green-house aren't up to 100, our number decreased with every passing day.
"Ouch!" I muttered, as we walked into a room as cold as I could never imagine. I watched Madame rest her fat ass on one of the chairs behind a large table.
I didn't need anyone to tell me where we were. The lingering bleach - scent in the room made it known. My eyes scanned the large room, from the large table at the center, to the microscope, the beakers lined up on the shelf, and then the white coat that hung by the side of the shelf. A laboratory? Why did she bring me to a laboratory?
"Lie down." She said, her fingers pointing to the patient-bed at the corner of the room. I reluctantly walked to it and laid on it. My hands rested on my belly as I wondered what would happen next.
The door opened, revealing a tall young man.
"What took you so long?" Madame asked him.
"My car broke down halfway here. I had to wait till a toll company arrived and took it to the car mechanics." He explained.
"Hi, June." He waved at me but I didn't respond despite my eyes being fixed on him. I wondered who he was and why he was here until I saw him wear the lab coat and hand gloves.
"Is she ready?" He turned to Madame.
"Probably." She replied sarcastically.
Ready for what? My eyes paid attention to what the Lab scientist was doing. He grabbed a box containing a needle and other items and approached me. I shrieked. My heart pounding and a sudden surge of heat in my body caused me to break into sweating. I hated needles. No, I feared them. The closer he came. The more I wanted to run.
"Shhh. It's going to be quick and painless." He assured me but it didn't help. I only wanted to obey the urge burning inside me. The urge to run.
"Relax, June." He repeated.
I closed my eyes, tightening them, not wanting to see the needle. I expected the sharp pain but it didn't come so I opened my eyes to see what had happened and just then he jammed the needle into my vein. I screamed but stopped immediately I realized I felt no pain.
"I told you it wasn't painful." He said, withdrawing the needle from my skin with my blood trapped in it.
My vision began to swirl and I felt a sharp headache. Did he take that much blood from me?
"You can sit up." He said, walking to the large table where Madame sat.
I couldn't sit up. Hell, I tried to. But everything was swirling around me and I fell back on the bed.
"Get up. Girl!" Madame scolded.
I forced myself up but as soon as my feet touched the floor. I dropped and blacked out.
***
In my darkness, I hummed my mum's favourite song, a lullaby she sang to us to make us sleep, and I swear, I felt her presence around me. I opened my eyes, trying to register the sight before me.
I couldn't make sense of where I was, but with my favorite lullaby ringing in my ear, I knew I wasn't alone. I sat up and looked at the direction where the humming was coming from, and I saw Jossy laid on the mattress behind mine. She faced the wall and had been the one humming the song all along. Why was she here?
"Jossy?" I called, and she stopped humming and quickly turned, her eyes shone with immediate excitement as she ran to me.
"I'm happy you're awake." She squealed, as we grabbed each other in a hug. "Thank goodness. I thought I'll never see you again." She added.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, gently pulling away from the embrace, my hands cupping her round face.
"Few hours after you were called. Madame called me too. They took some blood samples from me, and brought me here." Jossy explained.
"That's the same thing they did to me. Only that the lab scientist took excess blood from me." I mumbled.
"I'm happy we are together, June. One in life." She said, and I pulled her into a more tight embrace.
"One in death." I added.
The door opened and Madame walked in.
"Enough of the lovey-dovey, girls." Madame said, startling us, as we quickly stepped away from each other, giving her our attention.
"June, prepare your mind. Beta Andrew will be here tomorrow to pick you. Jossy, you'll be here for a while till we get another request for you." she announced.
"Excuse me, Madame. I have a question."
"Go ahead."
"Who is Beta Andrew? And where is he taking me tomorrow?" I asked.
"June. A better question should be: who he is taking you to. Be patient. You will find out soon." She answered, turning to leave. "Enjoy your time together girls. It could be your last." She declared, closing the door behind her.
"June." Jossy called as I slowly sat back on the mattress, wondering if this was how the other she wolves disappeared. They were sold out to a Beta.
"My goodness! Jossy we might never see each other again." I thought aloud as the realization of the predicament we were in dawned on me.
"No June. We are inseparable. Living in each other's hearts. Remember, we are one in life, one in death."
"One in life, one in death." I repeated.
Jossy took my hand in hers. "I will find you. Regardless of where I go, I promise. But you have to make sure you survive too. I wouldn't want to find you beneath the ground."
I nodded, grabbing her in a hug. "I love you."
"I love you more."
The door opened again revealing a slender lady in her thirties. She held a large tray in her hand, and the smell of delicious meals filled the room leading Jossy and I to salivate. Our eyes hungrily followed the tray down to the table, as our bellies made audible noises reminding us they were empty.
"They are probably giving us our last meal." I mumbled.
"All these for us?" Jossy asked, and the lady nodded. She left after dropping the food tray on the table.
Our eyes grazed the delicious view of steak and baked potatoes, Apple pies, fried chicken drumsticks, two plates of clam powder and hot dogs that stared back at us.
"What are you waiting for, June?" Jossy asked, grabbing a drumstick and taking a quick bite from it. "Mm. Crispy." She muttered, nodding her head in satisfaction.
I grabbed a plate of clam powder and a spoon and began to scoop the soup into my mouth.
"We've never had anything like this." Jossy said, dropping the half eaten chicken before going for the beef steak and potatoes. "I love this." She muttered.
Jossy and I were done eating. Our bellies were filled and tight. I felt like I needed to puke to get some relief. Jossy was also struggling, trying to get a more comfortable position for herself. Truly, overeating is a sin! We were living in its consequences.
It took a long time before we both had a little comfort and sleep took us in that very moment.
I woke up feeling lightheaded. I sat up, wondering why I was dizzy until I noticed I was alone in the room.
What happened? Where is Jossy? I looked around in search for my sister, and as I stood up to further my search a small note fell from my skirt and I picked it up.
'One in life. One in death. I will find you, I promise.'
"Oh no. NO!" I screamed, realizing what Jossy had done.
She had it planned all along. The clam soup. Jossy had refused to taste it despite it being her favourite. It was spiked, and I overslept just as she wanted. Oh my goodness, Jossy!
At that moment, the door flicked open and Mr Fred barged in with Madame behind him. I could see the disdain in his eyes for me. They were sore with anger and it was taking all of him not to shift. He came to me and before I knew it his hand landed on my face. It stunk me and I began to hear a ringing sensation in my ears. He hit me again and again until Madame held him back.
My face was hot and my cheeks were itching. I was sure they were red and swollen. My body shook violently. All attempts to steady myself failed. I was scared of the monster before me. It was obvious he was trying not to shift into a complete monster. If he did, I would be torn apart in the next second. He stormed out of the room without saying a word.
"Jossy is dead. I hope it comforts you to know that you killed your sister." My eyes jolted open, as the weight of Madame's words hit my chest.
"Yes. She couldn't survive the Alpha's knot." My eyes roamed around with tears building up in them.
"And guess what, he called and he is raging because he thinks we gave him the wrong she wolf. Thanks to you, but unfortunately, Beta Andrew will be back here tomorrow for you. You can't run away from your fate, little she wolf."
My vision blurred from the tears that formed in them as I watched Madame leave the room. My hand clutched my chest at the piercing ache that etched deep into my heart, creating a graping emptiness in me. It was difficult to hold all in, so I screamed at the top of my voice, letting it all out as the room shook violently.
