Chapter 1 The Heartbreak

ONE YEAR AGO – Falling for Jason Wolfe

Jojean Dawson had always believed in love.

Not the kind of love found in fairytales, but something real, raw, soft and consuming, the kind of love that made you feel seen in a world that was too quick to look away. The kind of love that makes the sky blue.

And for a while, she thought she had found it.

Jason Wolfe had come into her life like a storm, sweeping her off her feet with charming smiles, cute texts, late-night conversations, and promises she had been too naive to doubt.

He had made her feel special and Wanted.

The billionaire heir to Wolfe/Greec Enterprises, he could have had any woman in New York.

But he chose her.

Or at least, that's what she had believed.

THE BEGINNING OF THE LIE

They had met at a corporate networking event Jojean, just a low-level intern, and Jason, the golden boy of Wall Street.

She had been balancing a tray of champagne glasses, trying to avoid tripping over her own heels, when a deep, amused voice had cut through the noise.

"Careful, sweetheart. Wouldn't want you to drown New York's elite in overpriced champagne."

She had looked up, breath catching.

Jason Wolfe stood before her, a cocky smirk on his lips, his sharp brown eyes filled with mischief and his well-shaped cute lips.

For a second, she thought he was mocking her.

But then, he plucked a glass from her tray, his fingers brushing against hers for a split second long enough for her skin to heat.

"You don't belong behind a tray," he had murmured, taking a sip of his drink. "You belong next to me."

Jason had looked at her like she was the most fascinating woman in the room.

And just like that, she had fallen.

THE PERFECT ILLUSION

Dating Jason had been a dream.

Jason had been everything she had never dared to want. He is rich, powerful, irresistibly handsome. But more than that, he had made her feel special.

For months, their romance had been a whirlwind of passion. He took her to lavish dinners, private yachts, luxury vacations and exclusive parties.

He had also taken her to, five-star restaurants, and charity galas, spoiled her with tons of luxury gifts, introducing her to a world she never imagined she'd step into.

She was still a nobody.

But with Jason, she felt like more.

She had ignored the warning signs.

The missed calls.

The way he would cancel dates at the last minute, only to show up hours later with a lazy smile and an excuse that made no sense.

She had convinced herself that she was different.

That Jason loved her.

That she mattered.

She had believed it.

Until the night everything fell apart.

THE BETRAYAL

It had been raining that night. Jojean had been excited, Jason had told her to meet him at his penthouse.

She had spent an hour picking the perfect dress, straightening her hair, rehearsing the words she had planned to say.

Because tonight, she was finally going to tell him she loved him.

But fate had other plans.

The moment she stepped into the penthouse, she knew something was wrong.

There was a half empty bottle of wine on the coffee table, lipstick smeared on the rim.

'I could pick getting hit by a car, right now instead'

Jo' said in her heart.

As her heart pounded.

Then, she heard it.

A woman's laugh.

Soft. Intimate.

The sound of sheets rustling.

Jojean's breath caught in her throat.

No.

No

She stepped forward, pushing the bedroom door open.

And there he was.

Jason.

Shirtless.

Lying in bed, tangled up with another woman.

Jojean's world tilted.

She felt like she had been punched in the chest.

The woman, a stunning blonde barely spared her a glance as she reached for the champagne flute on the nightstand.

Jason's head snapped up.

For the first time, Jojean saw panic in his eyes.

"Jojean"

She stumbled back. "You, You said you were working late."

Jason ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

"I was. Until I wasn't." His voice was too casual, like he was explaining something as simple as the weather.

Jojean shook her head, trying to breathe.

"You said you loved me."

Jason let out a slow, tired sigh.

Then, he leaned back against the headboard, watching her with something unreadable in his gaze.

And then he spoke the words that would haunt her forever.

"Come on, Jo' . Did you really think this was going to last?"

Her chest caved in.

He laughed, shaking his head.

"Goshh, you're so naive."

The words cut deeper than a knife.

Jojean's hands trembled.

"You bastard." Her voice shook, but she didn't break.

Not yet.

Jason sighed again, as if this was exhausting for him.

"I had fun, Jojean. But you're not the kind of woman a Wolfe marries."

Her throat tightened.

Not the kind of woman a Wolfe marries.

Her vision blurred.

She had given him everything.

Her time. Her trust. Her heart.

And to him, it had meant nothing.

She turned and ran.

Jason didn't stop her.

He didn't fight for her.

And that's when she knew

She had been in love with a lie, it was all in her head.

'Ouch That hurts'

THE AFTERMATH – Picking Up the Pieces

For weeks Jojean was a total mess.

She avoided people.

She didn't leave her room for days. She felt foolish.

She quit her internship.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his face, his smirk.

She wanted to hate him.

But mostly, she hated herself for believing him.

Her best friend Ruby begged her to move on, but how do you move on from something that never really existed?

The city moved on.

Jason moved on.

But Jojean?

Jojean was stuck.

Until one day, an email arrived.

A JOB OFFER

Greec Enterprises.

She should have deleted it.

Should have walked away.

Jojean hesitated.

Jason worked there.

But the job paid double what any offer did.

But the salary was too good.

And she needed the money.

So she took it.

Not knowing that Jason wasn't the Wolfe she had to worry about.

Not knowing that she was about to walk straight into the arms of someone far more dangerous.

Owen Carter.
