"My dad's mistress is pregnant. He didn't hesitate to divorce my mom. He even planned to transfer all his assets to his mistress's name. But my dad's scheme quickly fell apart. The mistress was in a car accident with my mom. The mistress died along with her unborn child, while my mom came out unscathed."

Chapter 1

My dad's mistress got knocked up.

He didn't hesitate to divorce my mom and even planned to transfer all his assets to his mistress.

But his plans quickly failed.

His mistress and my mom were involved in the same car accident.

His mistress died, along with their unborn child, while my mom stayed alive.

At the hospital, I brought a bouquet to visit my mom.

Her leg was injured in the accident, and she couldn't be discharged yet.

"How is Scarlett?" My mom looked at me with a tired expression.

Scarlett Green was my dad's mistress, only five years older than me.

It was quite hard to imagine that a man nearing fifty could find so-called true love.

But the fact was that Scarlett, the mistress, held a significant place in my dad's heart.

I pared an apple for her and glanced at her weary face.

"Mom, you need to take care of yourself. Look, you have dark circles under your eyes."

"Where's your dad? Why hasn't he come?"

I hesitated, wondering whether to tell her, but then I realized it wouldn't be long before she found out herself.

"Scarlett is dead. Dad is handling her funeral arrangements."

Her usually composed demeanor suddenly faltered.

Fear and shock flickered in her eyes alternatively.

After a long pause, she instructed me, "Well... make sure you talk to your dad more often, okay?"

I could clearly see the pity and unease in her eyes.

A life was tragically cut short before her eyes, not to mention that an unborn child lost its opportunity to see the world.

It was indeed hard to take in.

But I was more concerned about my parents' marriage.

"Are you still going to divorce dad?"

"Depends on what your dad wants, but I doubt he has the mind for it now. Just take care of him and make sure he rests well."

When it came to serious matters, my mom immediately put away her momentary vulnerability.

"Give me my phone. I need to contact my assistant. I have to handle company matters."

I handed her the phone, and she quickly regained her former vigor through work.

I knew she needed to handle the unfinished division of assets between their companies.

No matter what, neither of them was in the mood for a divorce anymore.

After hanging up the phone, my mom asked me to leave.

"Kolton, you should head back. My assistant will be here soon."

My mom was passionate about her career and didn't have time to deal with me, her son.

Moreover, she didn't like being disturbed by unrelated people while working.

I obediently stood up and prepared to leave.

As I opened the door, a handsome young man happened to rush over.

I could hear his panting. "Kolton, is Michelle in this room? Is she okay?"

Before I could respond, my mom's voice called from inside.

Once he heard her voice, the man's eyes were filled with tears as he walked to my mom's side.

"I'm sorry I came late. If only I hadn't gone out of town," he said to my mom.

I watched them embrace and heard my mom softly comforting him, soothing her frightened lover.

I considerately closed the door behind them.

How interesting. My mom's lover seemed to truly love her, too.

But how long would my mom's interest in him last?

At that moment, I thought of my dad, wondering if he had recovered from the blow yet.

When I called my dad from the car, his voice was extremely hoarse.

I heard that he and Scarlett had planned to have a wedding in a church abroad, with white doves flying and beautiful flowers falling.

But now, he had lost the person who was supposed to accompany him there.

I couldn't help but feel sympathetic towards him. "Dad, are you okay? Mom wanted me to remind you to take care of yourself. If there's anything you need, let others handle it for you. Don't overwork yourself."

I conveyed my mom's concern.

"How's your mom?" My dad's voice was filled restrained anger.

I was taken aback, not expecting him to ask about my mom.

When she was hospitalized, my dad hadn't even contacted us.

Only now did he remember her.

"The doctor said it's just a minor injury. She'll be discharged soon, " I quickly replied.

He remained silent for a long time, not asking further.

I put my head on the wheel, a slight smile on my face.

I found it a pity not being able to see his expression at that moment.

What was he thinking?

My mom and his mistress sat in the same car, yet only his mistress died. It must be hard for him to accept.

"I'll handle Scarlett's funeral later. You manage the company for now, " my dad said in a deep voice.

I could hardly contain my joy and replied simply. Fortunately, my dad was even less inclined to continue the conversation than I was.

After hearing my response, he ended the call.

I happily listened to music, realizing my mom was right.

I should indeed show more concern for my dad.

It was not that I intended to gloat over his suffering.

When I was still a minor, everyone said my parents' business would be handed down to me.

But who would have thought my dad, nearing middle age, would find true love and even have a child with her?

Scarlett then received all of my dad's love, and he even planned to give her and her unborn child all of his assets.

To justify his decision, he even wanted to divorce my mom.

If it hadn't been for this decision, I might have wished him happiness and felt deeply sorry for his current plight.

But unfortunately, he once tried to exclude me from his life.

Even if he handed over what was rightfully mine now, I wouldn't feel the slightest bit moved.

My dad let go of the company just like that, fully dedicating himself to Scarlett's funeral.

He even held a memorial service in the house he had given to Scarlett.

Since I knew about this, I couldn't just ignore it, of course.

Dressed in black, with a small white flower pinned to my chest, I went to the memorial service.

I felt strangely indifferent. To be honest, Scarlett also had family.

Yet my dad seemed to be wallowing in the pain of losing everything, almost to the point of being unable to recover.

When I arrived, I didn't want to go in, just intending to go through the motions.

How could I possibly want to sincerely pay my respects?

Looking around outside, I spotted some familiar faces.

My mom and her lover.

She sat in a wheelchair, the two of them surrounded by roses.

These flowers were planted by my dad, simply because Scarlett liked them.

I wanted to approach and greet them, but before I got close, I heard a sob.

The man then knelt on the ground, burying his head in my mom's lap, crying uncontrollably and muttering Scarlett's name.

I felt a weight in my chest.

My mom was deeply affected by him, comforting him repeatedly.

"Domenic, don't be sad. You still have me."

I wanted to turn and leave, puzzled by my mom's decision to still keep her lover by her side.

Wasn't she afraid when looking at his face?

But I couldn't leave, especially when my mom had already seen me.

I entered the company smoothly, facing little resistance.

It wasn't just because of my dad's instructions. After my mom found out, she even gave me her shares in the company.

She even sent a few helpers, making my work in the company even easier.

I didn't want my mom to think I didn't have respect for her.

"Mom, " I called out.

She didn't look at me.

Instead, Domenic, hearing my voice, lifted his head to look at me, revealing his eyes red from crying.
