I became pregnant before marriage, and Wang Yangyang coaxed and deceived me into giving birth to the child. Later, when debt collectors came to my house, I found out that he had borrowed high-interest loans in my name. My mom was stabbed while trying to protect me from the debt collectors, and blood was gushing out. I, heavily pregnant, called for an ambulance, but the ridiculous thing is that I didn't even have money to pay for it. All the money in our family had been taken by Wang Yangyang to gamble. I watched as my mom was taken into the ICU and then brought out again. My mom passed away, and Wang Yangyang appeared at the hospital right on cue. He came to cause trouble. I slapped him, and he kicked me in the stomach. When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day he proposed to me.
I found myself pregnant before marriage-a huge scandal in my community-and my boyfriend Roger Greyson sweet-talked and manipulated me into keeping the baby.
Later, when debt collectors showed up at my house, I discovered he'd taken out high-interest loans in my name.
My mother Kate Green was stabbed trying to protect me, blood pouring out. I, heavily pregnant, called an ambulance, but the cruel irony was I couldn't even afford it.
All our money had been gambled away by Roger.
I watched as Kate was rushed into the ICU, only to be wheeled out again.
She passed away, and Roger, as if timing it perfectly, showed up at the hospital to cause trouble.
I slapped him, and he kicked me in the stomach.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day he proposed to me.
1.
On the school field, he had arranged dozens of wholesale white candles in a circle.
"Monica, will you marry me? I'll take responsibility for you and the baby."
The crowd was stunned for a moment before erupting in cheers.
Shamelessly, he continued, "How can you, a woman, raise a child alone? You don't have a father yourself, and you wouldn't want the child to grow up without a complete family, would you?"
He knew how insecure I was about being from a single-parent family.
In front of everyone, he exposed my miserable past, displaying them for all to see.
His public announcement of my pregnancy was just a ploy to pressure me into marrying him.
Unfortunately, in my past life, I was so blinded by love that I didn't see through it.
Last time, I was so moved that I went with him to the marriage registry office the next day. Only later did I realize he was in such a hurry to marry me so he could take out loans in my name.
Now, looking at the wilted rose in his hand, I found it ridiculously amusing.
I clenched my fists, determined not to let my child inherit such poor genes.
Sorry, little one. I couldn't let you have such a jerk as your father.
"What baby? I'm not pregnant. Are you out of your mind?"
"You are lying!" He panicked, stepping closer. "Didn't you tell me..."
"Told you what? Do you even have the required ability?"
I glanced down, raising an eyebrow.
The crowd burst into laughter, following my gaze, and Roger turned red with anger.
"I was just toying with you. Do you think you're worthy of me?" I held my head high, as if regaining the confidence I had before meeting Roger.
2.
After blocking all his contacts, I decisively went to the hospital for an abortion.
The doctor, about Kate's age, gently inquired about my situation. Even after her shift ended, she continued to remind me of post-surgery precautions.
Her warmth touched me, and her face seemed familiar, but I couldn't recall who she was.
Focused on my phone, I bumped into someone on my way out. A soft apology came from the boy I collided with. I glanced at him and stepped aside.
Holding my phone, I hesitated before finally dialing the number.
"My cupcake, do you miss me?"
The familiar yet distant voice came through the phone. In my past life, even when facing a thug with a knife, she unhesitatingly shielded me.
Kate was still alive this time. I still had my mom. It felt so good.
I tried to keep my voice steady, not wanting her to sense anything wrong. "Mom, I miss you."
Despite my efforts, I couldn't hold back my tears.
Kate raised me alone. Initially, she disapproved of my relationship with Roger, but I threatened her with hunger strikes and fake suicide attempts. She had no choice but to relent.
"Where are you now? Don't do anything foolish. I'll come get you."
Afraid she'd panic, I quickly wiped my tears and said, "Mom, I'm fine. I just miss your Wellington Steak. I'll come home for it during summer break."
We lived locally, which was why Roger clung to me.
Unfortunately, he miscalculated. Kate was just a nurse who worked hard for half her life to become a head nurse. She didn't want me to suffer, so she gave me more allowance than the average college student, making Roger wrongly assume we were well-off.
"Did Roger bully you again?" she asked cautiously, knowing he had previously borrowed a significant amount of money from me, causing many arguments between us.
"I've broken up with him."
"You what? You broke up?" She was so excited she could hardly speak.
"Yes." I nodded calmly. Although I hadn't officially informed Roger, it was only a matter of time.
After everything in my past life, just a glance of him made me sick. Now, all I wanted was for Kate and me to live well.
But I underestimated him.
When I returned to the dorm, I found my desk piled with clutter.
This was normal, given that I had spent most of my time with Roger and rarely returned to the dorm.
Initially, they advised me against being with Roger, but I only trusted him, relaying their words to him and mocking them over the phone. Gradually, my roommates stopped talking to me.
The dorm was eerily quiet, unlike the usual snide remarks. I found it odd.
My gaze met my neighbor's, and she quickly looked away.
The air was thick with awkwardness, and their sympathetic looks were unsettling.
A notification broke the silence. I opened it to find a message from an unknown sender.
"Check the campus media."
3.
The message came from a friend request. I didn't know this person.
Skeptically, I opened the confession wall, an online platform where students post anonymous confessions and messages.
"Monica from Class 21, Law Department, you don't have to marry me, but the child is innocent. How can you justify leaving your husband and child for an old man?"
The comments section exploded.
"Wow, she's cheated on purpose!"
"Does anyone know this Monica? Even the child's father is making a scene here. She's bringing shame to our prestigious law school. I demand the school expel her."
"Can someone post a picture of her? I want to see what someone so shameless looks like."
The next reply was a photo of me in a swimsuit, lying on the beach-taken by Roger.
"Nice figure, but too bad she's already a mom, haha."
Roger vanished from the scene, and the comments were overwhelmingly abusive towards me. Everyone seemed to forget that one person alone couldn't have a child.
I was shaking with anger. My roommate, who usually avoided me, pushed me into her chair and cautiously said, "Is there some misunderstanding here?"
The biggest misunderstanding was my poor judgment. I bit my lip hard. I should've known Roger, like a leech, wouldn't let go of his prey easily.
My roommate took a call, and after hanging up, she hesitated before looking at me. "The teacher wants you in the office."
The scandal on the campus wall quickly went viral locally, and neighboring schools caught wind of my disgrace.
When I arrived at the office, the advisor and deputy dean were there, with Roger standing to the side, head down.
He looked at me pitifully, but I caught a glimpse of cunning in his eyes.
"Roger explained the situation. The school suggests you two marry quickly, and we'll issue a statement calling it a misunderstanding." The deputy dean adjusted his glasses, clearly wanting to sweep it under the rug.
"Since the child is already on the way, we should face up to the situation and accept everything. But Monica, you must treat this boy well. Our school doesn't tolerate immoral behavior like being a third party. We considered to expel you, but it was Roger who pleaded for leniency."
The deputy dean spoke self-righteously, accusing me without verifying Roger's claims.
"Do you have any evidence I'm pregnant or involved with someone else?"
I held my head high, scanning the room, and fixed my gaze on the deputy dean. "You and I both study law. You know the burden of proof lies with the accuser, right?"
The deputy dean was momentarily speechless. Roger finally spoke up, "I saw her pregnancy test. She's pregnant. If you doubt it, Monica, take a test right here!"
My mind went blank.
The doctor had told me that within a month of a miscarriage, a pregnancy test could still show positive.
"Roger's right. A test will clear this up. Mr. Jefferson, go buy a pregnancy test."
The deputy dean's bias was blatant, as if Roger had something on him.
I nervously clenched my fingers, feeling like a criminal under interrogation.
I frantically tried to recall what I'd learned in class, but I'd been too busy flirting with Roger to remember anything.
My mind was blank when my phone buzzed again. Instinctively, I checked it.
It was the same blue profile in WhatsApp
"Restatement (Second) of Torts § 652D:Giving publicity to a matter that concerns the private life of another, where the matter would be highly offensive to a reasonable person, and the matter is not of legitimate public concern."
How did he know I needed this? But I didn't have time to think about it. I read it out loud as if it were a treasure.
I added, "Roger's slander has greatly offended my privacy. I reserve the right to pursue accountability."
They didn't expect that one of the most ignorant student like me, would know the details of law. The deputy dean was about to speak, but I interrupted him.
"I said you have something on Roger, which is why you're biased. If you disagree, show the evidence. I said Roger is infertile. If you disagree, let him get a medical certificate. I can make claims without evidence too. Does that make them true, Mr. Deputy Dean?"
The deputy dean rubbed his hands awkwardly. I left the suffocating office without looking back.
I'd seen Roger's shamelessness in my past life. He was like a leech, sucking the life out of others.
I didn't expect the deputy dean to be so out of touch.
I composed myself and headed to the library to study. The recent events reminded me that I was about to enter my senior year.
If I continued to slack off, it would be too late.
After all, I was once a dedicated and hardworking student, which is how I got into the best law school at in my city.
But as soon as I entered college, Roger latched onto me, and I neglected my studies.
As for Roger, I initially thought he was a sports student because his cultural knowledge was below even a middle schooler's. When I found out he was a senior in my major, I was shocked.
In my past life, Roger said studying was useless, and I believed him. Now, I just want to catch up on my professional knowledge and improve my English skills.
The weather was perfect. As I reached the library entrance, I ran into Rick-our class president.
He was leaning against the doorway, hands hanging by his sides, lost in thought.
"Monica? What are you doing here?" He seemed startled and flustered by my presence, his face turning red.
I wasn't particularly close to him. I didn't even recognize all my classmates, but I'd spoken to him a few times because he was the class president.
"Here is library. What do you think?" I replied politely, though a bit puzzled, and turned to head inside.
Just then, my phone rang- it was a call from the neighbor.
"Monica, you need to come home quickly! Kate has fainted!"
