The day before the zombie virus outbreak, I knocked out my ex-boyfriend, who had broken up with me a week ago, and carried him back home. It wasn't because I couldn't bear to part with him; it was just that in my previous life, I had been bitten to death while out looking for a man due to my unbearable thirst.

Chapter 1

1

"Wait, wasn't I already dead?"

I looked at my colleague beside me, puzzled.

"Warren Neal, hit me."

Warren looked at me in confusion, his eyes seemed to say that I was crazy.

Warren raised his hand and gave my forehead a solid smack.

"Ouch! Wow, I'm alive! Ha-ha, I'm not dead!"

The genuine pain brought me endless joy. Warren looked at me like I was crazy, and my loud voice attracted the attention of our supervisor.

"Megan Powell! If you don't want to work, just go home!"

I looked at the time. It was October 30th. After thinking for a moment, I took off the work badge around my neck and threw it on the desk.

Without another word, I rolled up my sleeves and started cursing at the supervisor.

"I'm done! I've had enough of your exploitation! This company is a joke! You promised a nine-to-six job, but we end up having meetings every day, and nothing ever comes of them! You are forcing me into your pointless pep talks every day!"

As expected, my words made the supervisor furious.

"You've been watching too much TikTok! You think you're some kind of social media influencer? Are you trying to reform the workplace here? I'm not buying it! Pack your things and get out!"

I was suppressed by him all my life in my previous life, and I wanted to resist in this life.

With a week left before the zombie outbreak, I needed to quit and get a loan to buy supplies.

The supervisor glared at me angrily. He must have thought I was crazy. Seeing his face turn red with anger, I felt so good.

Warren tugged at my sleeve, signaling me to apologize to the supervisor.

Instead of apologizing, I spat at the supervisor.

"Ugh! Old geezer! Warren, I'm telling you, in a week, this city will fall to a zombie virus outbreak. Do you want to leave with me?"

I whispered to Warren, who clearly didn't believe me. Honestly, I wouldn't believe it either if I were him.

"Megan! Get out! Now!"

The supervisor was hopping mad, pointing at the door for me to leave.

Fine, I would go. I grabbed my bag and left without looking back.

If I remembered correctly, Austin Shepherd broke up with me on this day in my previous life.

Austin was my boyfriend, whom I had been dating for three and a half years. He had never had sex with me in these three and a half years. My friends said he was a gentleman, but I didn't think so. I thought he must have a sexual dysfunction.

We were all adults. Why not have sex when we were in a relationship?

Sure enough, it wasn't long before I got a call from Austin.

"Hey, Austin. Don't say anything yet, just listen to me! I know you want to break up with me, but can you break up with me after some time? I promise I won't force you to do anything you don't want to."

There was a moment of silence on the other end. I didn't need to see to know Austin's brow was furrowed.

"Megan, what are you up to now?"

That was right. During my three years with Austin, I often gave him some "little surprises".

"I swear I have no ulterior motives!"

Perhaps because I often swore in front of him, Austin chuckled.

"You swear a hundred times a day. What are you up to this time?"

I changed my hand and held the phone, and talked a lot in one breath.

"I've been reborn. In a week, a zombie virus will break out here, and we'll all die in this disaster. So can we wait until the disaster is over before breaking up? I promise I won't cling to you then."

Austin obviously didn't believe me either. He just thought it was an excuse for me to deceive him.

"Have you been reading too many novels? Is your brain not working?"

I was a devoted novel enthusiast, a die-hard fan. One of the reasons Austin wanted to break up was that I often brought novels into real life, making him play different roles with me.

"I'm telling the truth. Look, I even knew you were calling to break up. Doesn't that prove I have some foresight?"

I didn't know how to convince him. He was so stubborn! He would be bitten to death by zombies.

"Didn't I mention breaking up yesterday?"

Fine! There was nothing I could do.

There was a sound of hanging up the phone.

Whatever, he was just a man. I could just find another one.

2

After quitting my job and returning home, I decided not to think about Austin for now.

I sold the house my parents left me in my hometown. My parents passed away early, and being an only child, I had full control over the family assets.

But my family was poor...

After scraping together everything, including the money from selling the house and my savings from working over the years, I barely had a million. I even had to max out my credit card for a few thousand more.

The most I could do was rent a three-story villa in a not-so-good location.

After renting the villa, I was out of money, but I needed to renovate it and stock up on supplies.

Just as I was at a loss, a loan offer popped up on my phone.

Right! I could take out a loan!

I immediately contacted various loan platforms and managed to secure a total of two million in loans.

Two million was enough for me to buy supplies.

First, I rented a villa with a garden in the suburbs. If the zombie virus lasted too long and supplies ran out, I could grow my own vegetables.

The villa's price was lower than I expected, a real bargain for the area. The area wasn't desirable. Wealthy people didn't want to buy it, and average families couldn't afford it, leaving many empty houses.

The agent couldn't stop smiling when I decided to rent it, and we settled on a price twenty thousand lower than I anticipated.

I could use this two hundred thousand to renovate the house.

The best advantage of this house was that it had few neighbors. I might only meet one or two people after walking for more than ten minutes.

I figured that when the zombie outbreak happened, there should be fewer zombies here, too.

After renting the house, I began the renovation. I replaced all the glass with bulletproof glass and added a layer of privacy glass inside.

When the zombie virus broke out, the ugliness of human nature would be fully displayed. In my previous life, I saw a man who locked his wife and son outside the door and was bitten to death by zombies, turning them into zombies.

Just in case, I also bought the most blackout curtains. Once drawn, the room would be pitch dark unless the lights were on.

I thought if people found out I had stockpiled food, they would stop at nothing to rob me.

So, I built a four-meter-high wall around the property, even sealing off the top of the gate with it.

To prevent anyone from breaking through, I had the workers reinforce the wall with steel bars and iron plates.

The workers were curious about my intentions. I joked that I was turning my home into a fortress for a survival game, and the atmosphere required such measures.

Yes, I wanted to turn my home into a fortress, where no one could get in or out.

My past experiences taught me that zombies were sensitive to sound, so I installed soundproof panels in every room where possible.

The front door was crucial. I installed three security doors inside and out. The installer thought I was out of my mind.

Outside the security doors was an iron gate, where I hid an alarm. If anyone tried to force their way in, the alarm inside would sound.

I built a small 20-square-meter freezer in the basement and bought about ten silent generators for emergencies. I also rented many diesel cars to extract diesel for the generators.

With the house sorted, it was time to focus on food and supplies.

3

I went to the used car market and bought a reliable van to transport supplies.

First, I went to the market to buy dozens of bags of rice, barrels of oil, and various seasonings, purchasing from different shops to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Then, I went to the wholesale market to buy hundreds of pounds of fruits, vegetables, and meats. I bought a lot of potatoes and sweet potatoes, not because I loved them, but because these were easier to store.

Next, I contacted five water companies to deliver at different times. I also stocked up on instant foods because, in my previous life, I died and didn't know when the zombie virus would subside, so I prepared as much as possible.

I bought many compressed biscuits, instant noodles, pasta, and snacks from the supermarket. Even if the power went out, these could last a while. I even bought over a hundred packs of toilet paper.

With food mostly sorted, I bought some seeds. Luckily, I grew up in the countryside, so planting vegetables was no problem. I replaced the flowers and plants in the yard with various vegetables. For me, cilantro and chili peppers were the most important.

I figured that during a zombie outbreak, staying home too long would drive anyone crazy, so I bought many common medicines and vitamins. As I left the pharmacy, my eyes fell on the shelf under the cashier's counter, filled with various condoms. I suddenly remembered I needed to prepare some "gifts" for Austin, so I bought all of them, taking everything, whether Okamoto or Durex.

I thought if others saw it, my home would be the first place to be occupied when a zombie outbreak occurred.

I used the basement and second floor to store supplies, and the first floor was packed as much as possible. The third floor was my resting place. Originally, there were two rooms, but I only bought one bed, leaving the other room for storage, so when Austin came, he would have to sleep with me.

On November 5th, there was still one day left before the zombie virus outbreak, and I was counting the goods at home to see if there was anything missing.

I realized I had forgotten flashlights and candles.

I immediately drove to the mall and bought ten boxes of energy-saving lamps, which could be used during a power outage. I also bought twenty flashlights, fifteen packs of candles, and fifty lighters. On the way back, I passed an appliance store and bought a water purifier. If there was no mineral water, I could purify rainwater. In my previous life, it often rained after the virus outbreak. Finally, I went to the hardware store to buy some everyday tools and self-defense items.

I also built a water reservoir in the yard.

With everything nearly bought, I looked at my fully stocked home with satisfaction. This would be my refuge.

These supplies would last me two to three years. If the problem wasn't solved by then, no worries. I could grow my own vegetables. I had never been this prepared, even after years of practicing survival skills.

That evening, I sat in the living room watching TV when a thought struck me. I quickly grabbed my phone and computer, deleting all the unused apps and downloading many novels and TV shows. When the city lost power, the network would collapse. Living in the information age, I needed to be prepared.

Everything was ready, yet I felt something was missing.

Oh, right. Austin!
