Chapter 1 First sight.

Claire walked in, eyes darting in every direction, she wore an old khaki shirt and long red pleated skirt, her long silk hair relaxing on her shoulders at both sides, she played with her fingers nervously as the old woman led her to the sitting room, motioning to her to have a seat.

"Sit here and wait, I'll go tell madam that your here."The old woman said thrilled with excitement.

Claire was like a daughter to her, she was friends with her mother and was glad to help her find a job.

Claire savoured every moment, enjoying the sight of the luxurious things, the furnitures, the wallpapers and figurines, such a life was far beyond her reach... she could only dream..

'If only I could go to college' she would always say to herself, for her college was where she needed to be, to fulfill her dream of becoming a Doctor... maybe... maybe...

Mrs Lynn walked in with elegance and poise, head up, without a smile across her lips, she sat on one of the sofas grabbing the news papers, crossing her legs, as the old woman hurried up from a distance, serving her hot chocolate tea.

"So Nanny Kayla says you are looking for a job."She sipped her tea, and cleared her throat, "So tell me do you cook? Can you clean?"She asked, giving Claire that sharp criticizing look...

"I do clean...I once worked as a janitor at one of the hospitals in Brooke's Town in L.A." Claire told her nervously as she pulled out the loose threads that danced at one end of her very old skirt one by one.

"You read and write don't you?"Mrs Lynn asked and Claire felt as if her intestines formed knots in her belly.

"I do."Claire stuttered a bit, and Mrs Lynn raised her eyebrows in doubt. "At least I can try."Claire spoke honestly avoiding her gaze.

"You'll work with Nanny Kayla and assist her in every thing she does, as you can see, she's growing old." She sighed.

Claire could only nod her head as she understood what Mrs Lynn had just said.

"So work will commence tomorrow, I say you pack your things tonight, and move in tomorrow. Don't worry, you'll have the whole night during weekends to spend some time with your family..."She spoke quickly and suddenly became quiet.

Claire looked up at her, "I understand Ma'am." She told her, although the conditions didn't favor her.

"So you may leave," Mrs Lynn got up on her feet, and wore a smile that looked fake, Claire wondered if it was the heavy makeup she wore that looked more like a mask that made it difficult for her to wear a smile on her face.

Claire started off towards the door after thanking Mrs Lynn for accepting her job request. She twisted the door knob and left slamming the door shut behind her.

She took a deep breath looking at the beautiful surroundings, the water fountain and the pretty flowers that sprouted everywhere, well pruned though.

She pulled her hair and hissed.

"Enough of the day dreams Claire." She told herself, gently slapping her chubby cheeks.

She hurried towards the gate, but a complete stranger walked in even before she got there...to the gate.

He was tall, with broad shoulders and a small waist. His eyes were amber, his lips were small and thin, his nose, pointed , with a smooth surface too. His had a brown shoulder length hair and a little mark on his forehead Claire noticed.

Lost in his charm Claire could only stare, she was very naive and shy.

"Good day sir."She greeted, looking at the ground.

The gentleman soon passed, brushing her a little.

Feelings of embarrassment slowly crawled in and Claire hurried out of the compound without wasting so much time.

She couldn't believe he had passed her without a glance, or at least an answer to her greeting.
