Chapter 1 The Rejected Mark

Selene's POV

The night I lost everything was the night I truly learned what it meant to be powerless.

I still remember the way the moon bathed the packhouse in silver light, the air thick with the scent of celebration-only it wasn't for me. It was for them.

Kieran and his new Luna.

My mate. My Alpha. My greatest mistake.

The moment Kieran had first laid eyes on me, I thought the Moon Goddess had blessed me with love. But I was wrong. He never wanted me-not really. I was a stepping stone, a pawn in his grand game for power. And when his ambitions led him to Lilith, the daughter of a powerful Alpha from another pack, I became nothing but an inconvenience.

I still hear his voice, sharp and cold, as he spoke the words that shattered my soul.

"I, Alpha Kieran of the Shadowcrest Pack, reject you, Selene Hayes, as my mate."

The pain had been unbearable. The mate bond wasn't just emotional-it was physical, a force so deeply woven into a wolf's soul that when severed, it felt like being torn apart from the inside. My wolf, Aurora, howled in agony, clawing at the edges of my mind, begging for a connection that no longer existed.

I had wanted to beg. To plead. To demand why he would throw away our bond for a woman whose heart beat only for his power.

But I had done none of those things.

I had squared my shoulders, lifted my chin, and met his gaze with the last shred of dignity I had left.

"I accept your rejection."

The moment the words left my lips, the bond snapped like a frayed thread. A sharp pain stabbed through my chest, stealing my breath. My knees wobbled, but I refused to fall. I would not give him the satisfaction of seeing me break.

Kieran barely flinched.

His golden eyes, once filled with warmth whenever he looked at me, were now cold, indifferent. As if I had never mattered at all.

"Good," he said, his voice void of remorse. "You may leave now."

Just like that, my fate was sealed.

I remember the silence that followed. No one spoke. No one protested. The pack that had once been my family turned their backs, whispering amongst themselves, their gazes filled with pity-or worse, indifference.

Lilith stepped forward then, a smirk tugging at her lips. She was stunning, with long raven hair and piercing blue eyes that held a cruel glint. She wore victory like a crown, her delicate fingers curling around Kieran's arm as she leaned into him possessively.

"Run along, little wolf," she taunted. "Your place isn't here anymore."

My wolf growled, but I swallowed back the burning humiliation. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of seeing me crack. Instead, I forced my trembling legs to move, walking out of the packhouse and into the cold night, leaving behind everything I had ever known.

I had no plan, no direction-only the sharp ache of a broken bond and the bitter taste of betrayal on my tongue.

But as I stepped across the Shadowcrest border for what I thought would be the last time, one promise burned in my soul.

I would never be weak again.

Three Years Later

The wind carries the familiar scent of pine and earth as I step back into Shadowcrest territory. The place that once rejected me. The place that made me.

I am not the same girl who left that night.

I have trained. I have fought. I have become something far greater than what Kieran ever believed I could be.

A soft breeze lifts my silver-blonde hair as I take in the familiar surroundings. Nothing has changed-except me.

I inhale deeply, my senses sharpening as I walk deeper into the land that once cast me aside. My boots press firmly into the damp earth, each step a silent declaration that I am no longer the broken girl they left behind.

A rustling sound catches my attention.

Then-

"Who goes there?" a voice barks.

I turn my head to see two warriors emerging from the trees, their postures stiffening when they lay eyes on me. Recognition flashes in their eyes, followed by shock.

"Selene?" one of them breathes, as if he can't believe what he's seeing.

A smirk tugs at my lips. "Miss me?"

They exchange uneasy glances. I know what they're thinking. That I should be long gone. That I have no place here.

"Why are you back?" the other warrior asks warily.

I lift my chin, meeting their gazes without fear.

"I have business with the Alpha."

Kieran.

His name no longer makes my heart clench. No longer stirs the pain that once nearly destroyed me. I have moved beyond him, beyond the rejection that almost crushed me.

The warriors hesitate before nodding. "Follow us."

As I walk behind them, the weight of the past lingers, but it does not hold me down. This time, I return on my terms.

And this time, I am the one who will decide how this story ends
