Chapter 1 Divorce paper

Claire paced around the living room, with her eyes fixed on the clock. Her husband is yet to come home, even though it is already so late at night.

She had already prepared dinner for him, even though he might not eat it. She still made sure to get his dinner ready every day.

The aroma of the roasted chicken filled the living room, but Claire anxiety drowned it out

Claire and Fredrick have been married for two years, and although their marriage was an arranged union, Claire has always loved him, and had dreamt of a marriage full of laughter and happiness, but she did not expect herself to be stuck in a loveless marriage for years.

She thought that Fredrick would learn to love her eventually if she kept on trying. She put all of her best into this marriage to make it full of love and happiness, but still, it doesn't look like her best was enough.

Her marriage to him was arranged by her late grandfather, who was friends with Fredrick's grandfather. She had always had a crush on Fredrick, and so she couldn't decline when her grandfather told her.

Frederick told her that he can never love her, and leave her alone on their wedding night. From that day he has been acting indifferent towards her, and ignoring her present.

She performed all of her duties as a good wife towards him, but he did not seem to see it, and kept on giving her a cold shoulder.

She remembered the night she tried to seduce Fredrick, wearing her best lingerie, hoping to spark something. But he coldly rejected her, his eyes devoid of desire

Claire was already getting impatient as the time passed by and her husband was yet to come home. She was worried about the food getting cold, so she checked the time frequently as she paced around the house.

Fredrick walked into the house wearing a cold face. Claire was so happy when she saw that he was back, she ran to him with a bright smile not expecting him to smile back at her but she was used to smiling whenever she saw him.

"You are home, come and have dinner. I have already prepared your favorite," she said as she tried to collect his bag.

"I don't want to eat food that you cook," Fredrick said as he pushed her away slightly, his hands trembling as he handed Claire the divorce papers, his eyes avoiding hers.

Her heart sank and her eyes lost their sparkle

"What is this, and why are you giving it to me?"

Claire's heart raced, and her hands trembled as she took the envelope, her fingers brushing against Fredrick's. The touch sent a shiver down her spine, as a reminder of the love they once shared when they once shared before they were married. Now, it felt like a distant memory, a fleeting dream. Fredrick did not love her for once, and he made it clear to her.

With numb fingers, Claire opened the envelope, and pulled out the papers. She stared at the paper that was going to set her free forever, immediately a mixed emotion rushed in through her.

She felt a stinging sensation in her eyes as tears welled up with tears. This was it. The end of their forever. Tears fell from her eyes dramatically as she was unable to control her tears as they fell.

Claire's hand moved slightly, as her hand trembled while holding the pen that was given to her by Fredrick; she hesitated for a while before signing her name on the dotted line. The scratch of the pen seemed to echo through the room, a death knell for their marriage. She knows that signing this paper will be the end of their marriage, and there is no going back.

Her shoulder sagged, realizing the tension she had carried for years, her eyes once bright with hope, now dimmed to registration.

As she handed the papers back to Fredrick, their eyes met for a brief moment. Claire saw a flicker of sadness, but it was quickly replaced by a mask of indifference.

She wondered if this man ever loved her for once or felt an attraction toward her, she was a very beautiful woman that anyone would want to be with, so what makes Fredrick different?

"It's done," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Claire nodded, the weight of those two words crushing her.

"Wait Fredrick," she said all of a sudden after he took a few steps.

"Why do you do this to me?" she whispered, her voice was so low and Fredrick could barely hear what she said. She was afraid of another rejection. What if he said some hurtful things to her that would haunt her for the rest of her life?

Fredrick halted at his steps and looked back at Claire who was already in tears, he did not try to avoid her gaze this time and look her straight in her eye. "What do you want to say?"

Her eyes flicked with his question "Why can't you love me, is it because I am not good enough for you?" she asked, as tears streamed down from her cheek down to her shirt, staining her white shirt.

Fredrick's gaze lingered, not moved by her streaming tears. "You are not the one with the problem, it is me,"

"I have done everything for you, yet you keep on breaking my heart every single time why? Why can't I be loved as well," she cried as she hit her chest.

Claire whispered 'What's the point of this?' as she gazes at the wedding ring, feeling sad.

Frederick's gaze draped away, avoiding Claire's eyes. A familiar sting pierced Claire's heart, as if Fredrick was hiding a secret from her.

Her eyes narrow. "What do you mean by it's you?" she asked, her voice laced with frustration.

Her tears fell harder. "I gave you everything," she sobbed, "Is this how you pay me?"

"I am sorry, Claire," Fredrick said, his eyes devoid of emotion, and avoiding hers..... "I have moved on. You have to accept it, so I can't stay in this marriage anymore, " Fredrick's face remained impassive and his voice emotionless.

he said what he had to say, before walking upstairs without looking back at her.

After he leaves Claire breaks down immediately. She was unable to control her tears and pains anymore, and she gave up too much to be with him than for this marriage to end like this.

"What did I do to deserve this kind of treatment, you keep on treating me as if I did not exist, why?" She keeps on questioning but there is no one to give answers to her questions.

As much as she tried to reason what he meant, she couldn't help it, she walked upstairs and locked herself in the room.

Few moments later, she heard Fredrick's door open and he left the house yet again.

She stood up and looked through the window, and watched him as he got into his car, and drove away.

"I hope that one day I will finally find someone who will love me, and not treat me like a trash bag,"
