Chapter 1 The Contract that changed everything

The heavy rain fell against the floor to the ceiling windows of Ethan Lancaster's house, showing reflections of the city lights on the marble floors. He stood near the glass, one hand wrapped around a glass filled with wine, the other, kept in the pocket of his trousers. The storm outside was like the one inside him.

He was not a man who let emotions choose his actions, but tonight was different. Tonight, he wants to make a decision that would change everything.

"Are you sure about this?" Oliver, his closest friend and legal advisor, asked, putting down a thick folder on the glass table.

Ethan turned slowly, his sharp blue eyes unreadable. "She does not have a choice," he said, his voice cold, final.

"She is not going to take this easily," Oliver warned. "You're forcing her."

Ethan drank the rest of his wine before putting the glass aside. "She needs the money. I need a solution. It's a simple deal."

But deep down, he knew it was not that simple. Because the woman in question Ava Sinclair, was the only person who had ever walked away from him. And now, he was about to make sure she never did again.

Ava hands gripped around the handle of her umbrella as she walked through the streets of Manhattan. She could feel the cold wind through her coat, but she barely felt it. Her mind was unstable, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She had received the call earlier that evening, a formal request to meet Ethan Lancaster at his house. She hadn't seen him in two years, not since the night she walked out of his life, vowing never to go back.

But here she was.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the compound of his building, her heels clicking against the floors as she approached the private elevator. The security guard barely looked at her before pressing the button, as if he had been expecting her.

Of course, he had.

The ride up was somehow slow, the silence stretching out her nerves. When the doors finally opened, she stepped into his luxurious, cold, and suffocatingly familiar world.

And then she saw him.

Ethan stood at the center of the room, exercising power, confidence, and something darker, something she had once been addicted to. His gaze met hers, and for a second, none of them spoke.

Then he broke the silence.

"You came," he said, his voice low, dangerous.

"I did not have a choice," she replied, placing her bag on the nearest chair. "What do you want, Ethan?"

His lips moved into something that was quite a smile. "I want you to sign this."

He gestured to the thick contract on the table. Ava's stomach twisted as she stepped forward, her eyes scanning the front page. And then, her breath caught.

Marriage Contract.

Her head snapped up. "You cannot be serious."

Ethan rest back against the table, crossing his arms. "Oh, I am. You need money, Ava. I need a wife."

Her hands curled into fists. "Find someone else."

"I don't want someone else," he said smoothly. "I want you."

Ava felt her pulse race. This was not just about a contract. This was about something much bigger, and dangerous.

And she had no idea if she could survive it.

Cliffhanger: Will Ava sign the contract? Or will she walk away again, knowing Ethan won't let her go so easily this time?
