Chapter 1 A Polite First Meeting
My father-in-law, Jeffery Brooks, never even took care of my husband for a single day when he was growing up.
Yet, at the age of sixty, he became a full-time grandfather.
I should be grateful to him, until I discovered he was putting sleeping pills in my son's formula.
My husband and I had been married for two years, and life was going fairly well. After covering our daily expenses, we could still save a little.
And then I got pregnant and gave birth to our child.
Formula and diapers all cost money, so after hiring a nanny for two months, we decided to cut costs and eliminate any unnecessary expenses.
Thus, we let the nanny go and, after our discussion, we invited Jeffery, who had just retired in a small town, to help us with the baby.
When my husband called him, he said he would think about it. We were worried he wouldn't come, so we persuaded him gently and promised that he only needed to watch the baby during the day, and we wouldn't trouble him at all once we got home from work.
After hesitating for a few days, he fortunately agreed.
My husband and I were thrilled and cleaned the spare room thoroughly.
About a week later, he arrived, bringing along a middle-aged woman who looked to be around forty. Her name was Susan Jones.
We were a bit taken aback, as he had never mentioned having a girlfriend before.
Nonetheless, we greeted them warmly and, to show our appreciation, even treated them to a special dinner.
"Dad, Ms. Jones." I said, raising my glass filled with water, "I'll be heading back to work next week since things are picking up at the office. We'll be counting on you to take care of the baby."
Ms. Jones eagerly raised her glass as well. "Oh, don't say that way! I absolutely adore children."
My husband and I exchanged a glance and repeatedly thanked both Jeffery and Ms. Jones.
That was just how we were, always believing that since the baby was Jeffery's own grandchild, and Ms. Jones seemed utterly smitten with him, they would surely treat the child well.
With the biggest issue resolved, I began to focus my energy on work.
