Emerald Scott is a woman endowed with beauty and wealth. She lacks nothing except one thing that her money couldn't buy, 'TRUE LOVE.' But everything changed when she met the only man that ever showed her sincerity in love, Dennis Spencer. Even though he was rejected by her family, Emerald didn't hesitate to say 'Yes' to Dennis at the altar and sacrificed everything she had to transform him from a broke ass into a billionaire CEO. Everything was perfect, until their third anniversary, when Dennis returned home with his ex-girlfriend, who was pregnant with his second child, and threw divorce papers at Emerald. "You have two hours to sign this divorce and get the hell out of my life. I'm way out of my league now, Emerald. Besides, Sylvia here is pregnant, and I'm sure you won't advise me to cling to a barren soul like you, right?" he declared coldly without a surge of remorse. She pleaded with tears, but she was still thrown out of the home she built without a pin of belonging. She lost everything!*************"Marry me, Emerald, and I'll give you everything you ever desired," Adrian Taylor requested. He is the youngest business mogul, who turned out to be Dennis's top and most influential client. "Yes, I'll marry you, but under one condition: you'll destroy everything that Dennis has and turn him into a street beggar." Emerald replied with a determined voice. ****************** "Emerald, I can't believe that you chose to be a shameless gold digger instead of getting a cure for yourself!" Her ex-husband said with his reddened and regretful eyes when he lost everything. "Are you starting to regret your actions now, Mr. Dennis?" "Or–do you have more to say? How about you call me a gold maker? Because I'm back to take every good thing I've ever brought to your life," she declared with a smug smile.
CHAPTER 1
AN UNEXPECTED DIVORCE
Emerald stared at the doctor triumphantly with an agitated frown. Why was he reporting another patient's result to her?
"Mrs. Spencer, you're four weeks gone, and you don't have to panic anymore. Research has shown that a surgery could be done in your case, which means you're not dying anytime soon." Doctor Damian reported, his tone laced with assurance.
Emerald's eyes widened in shock.
Pregnant?
"D-doctor, h-how true could this be? I mean..." Emerald stammered as she managed to talk while staring at the test result in her trembling hands.
She has a million and one questions to ask.
"I understand your fears, Mrs. Spencer, but the only explanation I can give you now is that miracles still exist!" the doctor cut in.
"You only need $800,000, and the surgery would be carried out successfully. And for the baby, don't worry, he'll be fine," he added.
Emerald clutched the test result in her hands; tears of joy streamed down her face.
$800,000? She doesn't have up to that amount of money in her account! Emerald mumbled and sighted.
"I know Dennis would pay for me. Besides, I only need $200k from him, right?" She said to herself, and a convincing, outrageous smile washed down her face.
Overly excited, she picked up her phone immediately and dialed Dennis's number, imagining the joy that would flush his mind to know that he's finally going to be a father! Dennis was one in a million, not like other men who'll create a fuss over their wife's childlessness.
"No!" Emerald thought to herself and hung up the call.
"It'll be better if I disclose this news to him at our anniversary dinner," she thought.
"There, he can scream his loudest shout of joy and carry me in his arms like a baby, kiss her, and pin her down on the five-star hotel bed and perform the best ride on her."
"You can take a day off today. I'll make dinner by myself," she told the maid on duty.
After all the preparations, Emerald dressed and aimlessly stared at the clock, anxiously waiting for her husband's call.
Her joy gradually dissipated when she waited for hours without seeing a call from Dennis, and all her efforts to reach him on the phone were futile.
"What is happening?"Quickly, she scrolled through the internet, but she saw no news of a plane crash.
"Mother, please, have you heard from Grey? I've been..."
"I believe your husband is no longer a toddler, so get lost!" Laura warned without any surge of concern and continued with her makeup.
Emerald felt a deep cut in her heart. Why was Laura suddenly not bothered about her son?
"Yes, ma'am, he told me that his flight is taking off soon," his assistant at the office replied when Emerald confronted her.
Immediately she dropped the call; a WhatsApp voice note popped up from a strange number.
Curious, Emerald instantly played the voice note.
"Hope you get your belongings out of that house before we arrive," the familiar voice of a lady said.
"Sylvia? Is this some sort of joke?"
Emerald felt a stab of pain in her heart. Isn't she supposed to be in Brazil? What the hell is she doing in California?
All efforts to reach Dennis on the phone turned futile.
Soon, her doubts were dispelled when she received a live video of Dennis with Sylvia, who was heavily pregnant, and a little cutie who should be four years of age.
Emerald gasped in frustration. A twinge of pain struck her heart, and she felt like she was going to die immediately.
Still wailing and drenched in tears, she kept hoping for Dennis to call and tell her that all was a prank, but everything seemed true when Dennis's vague message popped up on her phone: "I'LL BE MAKING OUR DIVORCE OFFICIAL AT MOTHER'S PARTY TONIGHT."
"Noooooooo!" Emerald screamed and unconsciously dropped to the ground after reading the message.
What has she done to deserve this?
Everything was perfect, and they never had an argument before he left for the one-week trip!
The thought of rejection she faced from her family for choosing the poor Dennis over their choice of a rich man and the sleepless nights she had struggling to get partnership deals for the company using her connections, which has gradually transformed Dennis into one of the fast-rising billionaire CEOs in town, forced an ocean of tears down her cheeks.
"Excuse me, ma'am, please, here's a document you need to sign," a corporately dressed man in a suit approached Emerald with an envelope as she approached the birthday reception ground.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT? Emerald's eyes widened in shock as she glanced at the letter headed paper presented to her with Dennis's signature.
So it's true? She mumbled, and her hands began to tremble."I'm not signing this fucking document without an explanation from your client!" Emerald insisted and threw the papers at the man.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. You're not permitted to enter without signing those papers," the security at the gate said as he blocked her path, redirecting his gaze at the lawyer.
Emerald couldn't suppress the anger she was feeling anymore. "Paw! Is everyone suddenly going mad here?" She rambled after launching a resounding slap on the security's face.
"If there is anyone who is mad here, don't you think it's you?" A familiar voice said from behind.
"Dennis!" Emerald exclaimed as soon as she turned and sighted her husband.
Her gloomy face suddenly turned radiant with a smile as she ran towards him, but she noticed the bitter look on his face; yet, she didn't let that stop her from moving forward to hug him. As soon as she reached, he moved away and gave her a wry look that caused her to freeze.
"Why must you create a scene in the ordinary signing of a paper?" Dennis scolded, his voice laced with disdain and his lips curled in disgust. The woman beside him giggled, and her eyes suddenly regarded Emerald with contempt.
"Sylvia here is pregnant with our second child, so can you please sign those papers and stop wasting our time?"
Emerald gaped and raised a brow in surprise. She couldn't believe she's truly hearing this from the man that promised to love her till eternity.
"Dennis, so you never loved me?" Emerald croaked with tear-filled eyes."You have two hours to sign those papers and get yourself out of that house," he mentioned with an impatient gesture and kicked her off his path, making way into the hall with his Sylvia and his son.
Emerald couldn't bear the pain and humiliation, so she instructed her driver to take her home immediately.
On reaching home, she threw herself to the ground and cried unceasingly, hoping and praying that Dennis would change his mind once he returned from the party.
They've been married for three years and dated for only two years after Dennis's breakup with Sylvia.
Didn't he always tell her how lucky he was to have her as a wife? Lamenting and cursing Sylvia for leaving him to Brazil because he wasn't financially buoyant.
Does that mean they only connived to use and dump her after getting the life they desired? She wailed.
"I'll be forced to throw you out like a dog if you don't sign those papers and leave willingly," An emotionless voice of Dennis thundered as soon as they got back home.
Emerald divested the last ounce of pride in her and crawled on her knees and grabbed his knickers tightly. "Dennis, please, think of what you're about to do. Our anniversary is tomorrow, and I've already got the best hotel reservation for us!" She cried.
"Mother, please say something; I'm sure he'll listen to you!" She pleaded with her mother-in-law.
"Dennis, remember how I've helped you! And I can still give you children!" She wailed.
"Ha-ha-ha-ha," Dennis let out a smug laugh.
"Look who has been examined and confirmed by six different gynecologists to be barren after four failed IVFs! I thought you were only barren, but now I can see that you're demented as well!"
"And why would you think I'd love to have anything special to do with a dying woman like you?"
Emerald jerked up. Instantly, her tears dried up, and she gaped in shock.
"Oh! You think I'm not aware? Common, I already know that you have only seven months to live; that's why-" He paused and growled.
"That's why I've withdrawn the remaining balance in your account and left $1000 for you. Hope that amount can take care of you till you finally die. Or do you want to be buried with your money as well?
"Instantly, her phone chimed with a debit alert, and the realization that everything Dennis mentioned was true dawned on her.Dennis's words left Emerald in shock. She was too heartbroken to cry. Immediately, she grabbed a pen from the center table and signed the papers.
"Where do you think you're going?" Dennis asked as she ascended the staircase in a rage to get her belongings.
"Didn't you read the papers? You're not taking anything from this house, you dumb liability! I've transferred the ownership of everything to my mother's name, so get your stinking self out of here and never come back!" He yelled and forcefully dragged her out of the house and slammed the door behind him.
