Chapter 1 A Collision of Fates

The rain fell in relentless sheets as Evelyn Carter dashed through the city streets, her umbrella no match for the storm. Her first day at Grey Enterprises was hours away, but a restless night had driven her to clear her head with an early morning coffee.

As she turned the corner near the bustling café, she collided with a tall, solid figure. Her umbrella flew out of her hand, and the coffee in her other splashed onto her coat.

"Watch where you're going" she snapped, breathless and frustrated.

The man she'd bumped into barely flinched. He stood there, unbothered, his sharp suit untouched by the chaos. His piercing dark eyes scanned her, his expression a mix of irritation and amusement.

"And you think yelling at a stranger is the best way to fix this?" he asked, his voice calm but laced with an edge.

Evelyn met his gaze, her own fire sparking to life. "Well, when said stranger blocks the entire sidewalk yes, I do."

A flicker of something crossed his face interest, perhaps but it vanished as quickly as it appeared. He stepped aside, gesturing for her to pass.

"By all means, continue your morning tantrum," he said smoothly, the faintest smirk tugging at his lips.

Evelyn bit back a sharp retort, grabbing her fallen umbrella and brushing past him. "Unbelievable," she muttered under her breath, but her pulse raced as his gaze lingered on her back.

By the time she reached Grey Enterprises, the encounter was already a distant memory. She stepped into the sleek, modern office building, her confidence intact despite the morning's chaos.

The receptionist directed her to the 45th floor, and Evelyn took a deep breath as the elevator doors opened. This was her moment to prove herself.

She was greeted by a series of bustling employees, their focus sharp and energy palpable. But the room seemed to hush as a commanding voice echoed across the floor.

"Carter."

Her heart skipped a beat. That voice was unmistakable. She turned, and her stomach sank.

It was him. The stranger from the street.

He leaned casually against the edge of a desk, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable.

"I see you're making quite an impression already," he said, his smirk more pronounced now.

Evelyn felt the weight of every eye in the room on her. But instead of faltering, she straightened her posture and met his gaze with defiance.

"And you must be Mr. Grey," she said, her voice steady despite the storm brewing in her chest.

Lucas Grey's smirk deepened. "Let's see if you're as sharp in the office as you are on the street."
