Chapter 1 THE MYSTERIOUS LETTER

Gabrielle Hall sat in her small college apartment, surrounded by piles of textbooks and notes. She was a junior majoring in business administration and determined to make a name for herself in the corporate world.

As she studied, Gabrielle's mind kept wandering back to her family. She had lost them in a tragic car accident when she was just a teenager, and she had been on her own ever since. We'll not that really since she received proper help from her Aunt. She'd helped her with her every need including her tuition fees and allowances. She'd promised to support her until her graduation and she was so grateful for her.

She faced troubles a couple of times but not enough to lose her confidence. Gabrielle was strong and resilient. She had worked hard to get where she was and was proud of herself.

Just as Gabrielle started focusing on her studies again, there was a knock at the door. She got up to answer it, expecting it to be one of her friends or perhaps a delivery person.

But to her surprise, it was a courier holding a large envelope.

"Gabrielle Hall?" he asked, looking at her with a serious expression.

Gabrielle nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. "That's me," she said.

The courier handed her the envelope. "This is for you," he said, before turning and walking away.

Gabrielle was confused. Mine? From who? She opened the envelope and pulled out a large document.

As she began to read, her eyes widened in astonishment. It was a marriage certificate. And her name was on it, paired with a man she had never heard of.

Maverick Ryder.

Gabrielle felt like she had been punched in the gut. Married? How was that possible? She had never met this man, let alone married him.

She read on, her heart racing with every word. The certificate stated that she and Maverick had been married two years ago, in a small ceremony in Vega City.

Gabrielle's mind was reeling. Two years ago? That was impossible. She would have remembered getting married. She just turned 18 at that time.

She read on, frowning hard while searching for answers. But the more she read, the more questions she had.

She massaged her temples, feeling her head was about to burst. Why had she gotten married without remembering it? And who was this Maverick Ryder person?

Gabrielle felt like her whole world had been turned upside down. She didn't know what to think or feel. One moment, she was single, and the next moment she was married to a stranger. What on earth was happening?

As she stood there, frozen in shock, her phone rang. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should answer it.

But something told her that she had to.

She picked up her phone, her heart racing with anticipation. "Hello?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

There was a pause on the other end of the line before a low, husky voice spoke. "Miss Hall," the voice said. "We need to talk."

Gabrielle's heart skipped a beat. Who was this person? And what does he want?

But before she could ask any questions, the line went dead.

Gabrielle was left standing there, holding her phone and wondering what was going on.

And then, she saw it. A piece of paper on the floor, near the door.

She walked over to pick it up, her heart racing with anticipation.

As she read the words on the paper, Gabrielle's eyes widened in shock.

"You're in danger," the note said. "Meet me at the coffee shop on 5th Street at 5 pm if you want to know the truth."

Gabrielle felt like her whole world was crashing down around her.

What truth? And who was behind the note?

She looked at her watch, her heart raced in nervousness.

5 pm was just a few hours away.

Gabrielle paced back and forth, her mind was clouded with different thoughts. Her marriage, the call, and the note. Everything seemed like a puzzle that needed to be put together but who could give her the answers?

Aside from her best friend, Alexandra, she has no one else to ask for help. Well, she remembered her Aunt but she was living overseas and she was embarrassed to disturb her with such nonsense. However, the marriage thing wasn't a joke, could it be that her Aunt had something to do with it?

Gabrielle shook her head. There's no way her Aunt would do such a thing to her. She would've told her earlier if she did. She sighed in resignation, her heart felt heavy all of a sudden. "I guess I'll have to meet him then."

At 5 pm, Gabriell stood outside the coffee shop, her heart was beating fast. She had decided to take a chance and meet the mysterious person who had called and written her the note.

As she took a deep breath and pushed open the door, Gabrielle's eyes scanned the room for any sign of the person she was supposed to meet. But as she looked around, she started to feel a sense of unease.

What was she doing? She didn't even know who this person was or what he wanted.

Gabrielle's doubts started to get the better of her, and she turned around, deciding to leave. But as she reached the door, she felt a pang of guilt. What if this person had important information about her family?

Despite her reservations, Gabrielle couldn't shake off the feeling that she was making a mistake. She decided to leave and forget about the whole thing.

While walking back to her apartment, Gabrielle couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. She felt like she had just missed an opportunity, but she didn't know what it was.

That night, she lay in bed, her mind racing with thoughts and questions. Who was the person who had written her the note? And what does he want? Maverick Ryder, who was he?

Despite her exhaustion, Gabrielle couldn't sleep. She kept thinking about what could have been, and what might happen next. Will there be someone or something to appear on her doorstep again?

Gabrielle clenched her fists hoping it wouldn't be Maverick Ryder otherwise she wouldn't mind giving him a taste of his medicine.
