Chapter One: Labour of Love

Emily's eyes snapped open as a sharp pain ripped through her abdomen. She gasped, clutching her belly. "Mom, I think it's time," she panted.

Her mother, Karen, rushed to her side, helping her out of bed. "Okay, sweetie, let's get you to the hospital."

As they made their way to the car, Emily's contractions grew stronger. She gritted her teeth, trying to breathe through the pain.

At the hospital, Karen helped Emily into a wheelchair and rushed her to the labour ward. The nurse quickly hooked Emily up to the fetal monitor and began examining her.

"How far apart are your contractions?" the nurse asked.

"About five minutes," Emily replied, wincing as another contraction hit.

Karen held Emily's hand, trying to distract her from the pain. "You're doing great, honey. Just breathe."

As the nurse continued to monitor Emily's progress, Karen asked the question Emily had been dreading. "Emily, sweetie, who's the father of the baby?"

Emily hesitated, feeling a mix of emotions: guilt, shame, and uncertainty. "I...I don't know, Mom," she admitted, looking away.

Karen's expression softened. "It's okay, honey. We'll figure it out later. Right now, let's just focus on getting this baby born."

Emily nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She was grateful for her mother's support, but she knew she couldn't avoid the question forever.

As the hours passed, Emily's labour progressed, and she began to feel the urge to push. The nurse coached her through the final stages of labour, and finally, at 3:47 am, Emily gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

"It's a girl!" the nurse exclaimed, holding up the baby for Emily to see.

"We're not in a good financial state, sweetie," Karen said gently. "Your father's illness has left us with a lot of debt, and I'm not sure how we'll manage to take care of a baby."

Emily's eyes widened in concern. "Oh, Mom, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize it was that bad."

Karen squeezed her hand. "We'll figure it out, but we need to find the father of the baby, Emily. We need to know if he's willing to help support his child."

Emily felt a pang of guilt and anxiety. She had been so focused on her pregnancy and preparing for motherhood that she hadn't thought about the practicalities of raising a child.

"I don't know who the father is, Mom," Emily admitted, feeling a sense of shame.

Karen's expression softened. "We'll figure it out together, okay? But we need to try to find him, for the sake of the baby."

Emily nodded, feeling a sense of determination. She would do whatever it took to provide for her child, even if it meant facing the uncertainty of her past.

As Emily sat in her hospital bed, she felt a sense of exhaustion wash over her. She had been holding her baby girl for what felt like hours, and she needed a break. "Mom, I'm going to use the washroom for a minute," Emily said, handing the baby to Karen.

"Okay, sweetie, I'll watch her," Karen replied, smiling. Karen placed the sleeping baby into her crib and stepped outside to pick a call.

Emily made her way to the washroom, feeling a sense of relief as she closed the door behind her. She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm her racing thoughts.

When she returned to her room, Emily's heart sank. The baby was nowhere to be found. Karen was frantically searching the room, looking under the bed and in the closet.

"Mom, where's the baby?" Emily asked, panic rising in her voice.

Karen's face was white with worry. "I don't know, Emily. I Just stepped out to receive a call when she slept for a second, and she was gone."

Emily's eyes scanned the room, but there was no sign of her baby. She rushed to the nurses' station, her heart racing with fear.

"My baby's missing," Emily exclaimed, trying to keep her voice steady.

The nurses sprang into action, quickly searching the hospital floor. But as the minutes ticked by, Emily's hope began to fade.

The police were called, and soon the hospital was swarming with officers. Emily was questioned, as was Karen and the hospital staff.
