The design features a mysterious nighttime Parisian alleyway, dimly lit by vintage street lamps. A silhouette of a woman holding a small leather notebook runs into the shadows, while a man with piercing green eyes and a hint of a bleeding wound stands in the foreground, looking protective but tense. The scene is atmospheric, with a blend of suspense and emotion, using dark tones with accents of red to symbolize danger and passion. The title 'Shadows of the Heart' is written in bold, elegant lettering, with a touch of mystery.

Chapter 1 Shadows of the heart

Lena was running out of time. The dim alleyways of Paris echoed with the sound of her hurried footsteps as she clutched a small, leather-bound notebook to her chest. It contained the secrets of an underground network tied to a powerful corporation-a network that could destroy lives. She hadn't planned to fall into this mess. She hadn't planned to fall in love, either.

Three weeks ago, she'd met Aiden at a quaint café on Rue Cler. He was charming, with piercing green eyes and a crooked smile that melted her defenses. They shared long conversations over espresso, laughing like old friends rediscovering each other. But then came the whispers-Aiden worked for Vanguard Industries, the very corporation she was investigating.

"You're in over your head, Lena," her informant had warned. "Trust no one, especially him."

But how could she forget the way Aiden had looked at her? Like she was the only person in the world who mattered. She didn't want to believe he was dangerous, yet she couldn't ignore the facts.

Now, as she turned a corner, she felt a cold hand grip her arm. Whipping around, she found herself face-to-face with Aiden.

"Lena," he said, his voice low and urgent. "You need to give me that notebook."

Her heart pounded. "So it's true, isn't it? You work for them."

His expression flickered with something-guilt? Desperation? "I did," he admitted. "But it's not what you think. I'm trying to bring them down too. That notebook...it's the key. But if they find you with it, you won't live to see the morning."

"How can I trust you?" she whispered, taking a cautious step back.

He stepped closer, his green eyes boring into hers. "Because I'd rather die protecting you than let them win."

The sincerity in his voice shattered her resolve. But before she could respond, a sharp crack pierced the air-a gunshot. Aiden shoved her behind him as he fell to the ground, blood blooming across his shirt.

"Lena, run," he gasped, his face pale.

Tears blurred her vision, but she nodded. Clutching the notebook tighter, she fled into the night, promising herself she'd uncover the truth-and save the man who had risked everything for her.

The hunt wasn't over. It was only beginning.

Elodie took a deep breath and knocked, the sound echoing in the quiet corridor. A moment of silence passed, broken only by the pounding of her heart. Finally, the door snicked open, revealing a surprised Dashiell. 'Can't you see the Do Not Disturb sign? We don't want-' His initial frown quickly morphed into confusion at the sight of his wife. 'What are you doing here?' he demanded. 'Your girlfriend invited me,' Elodie replied, her voice laced with icy calm. She tried to peer past him, but his broad frame blocked the view. A saccharine voice chimed in from within the room. 'Elodie? Oh dear, we didn't mean for you to find out this way. It's just that-' Elodie cut her short. 'Oh please, Selene. Spare me the fake apologies. You wouldn't have sent me all those texts if you didn't want me to know.' Dashiell shifted uncomfortably, his face a mask of annoyance. 'What texts?' Elodie stepped past him, taking in the luxurious suite with a sardonic smile. The king-sized bed, the scattered rose petals, the lingering scent of sex – it all painted a vivid picture of their betrayal. She looked up at Dashiell, her gaze unwavering. 'I want a divorce.' ****** Dashiell lived a life of luxury, surrounded by the best things money could buy.
