Chapter 1 The Stranger's Secert

Valentina carried the unconscious woman toward her black SUV parked under the shadow of the cliffs. Her boots crunched on the gravel, and the soft weight in her arms felt alien-fragile. She wasn't used to tenderness, not in her world of sharp edges and cold-blooded decisions.

When she reached the vehicle, her right-hand man, Marco, stepped out from the driver's seat, his eyes narrowing at the sight before him.

"Who's that?" he asked, his voice low but tinged with suspicion.

"I don't know yet," Valentina replied curtly, brushing past him to lay the woman gently across the back seat. "But she needs help."

Marco's brow furrowed. "You sure about this, boss? Could be a trap. You know how these things-"

"She's not a trap," Valentina snapped, her tone brooking no argument. "She's half-drowned and terrified. I'll figure out the rest later."

Marco nodded reluctantly and got back into the driver's seat. As the SUV roared to life and they sped away from the beach, Valentina kept her eyes on the woman. Her pale skin glistened with a sheen of saltwater, her lips slightly parted as if whispering secrets in her sleep.

For someone who had built a fortress around her emotions, Valentina felt disturbingly drawn to her.
