The pack was closed now. Selene could hear their low growls and the rustling of leaves as they approached. She and Luca had to move fast. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what came next.
"Follow me," she whispered, and they ran.
The wind howled around them, the moonlight casting shifting shadows as they darted through the forest. Selene's heart pounded in her chest as her instincts guided her, the bond to the land and her wolf side working in unison.
Luca kept pace beside her, his breath steady despite the urgency. He wasn't just running for his life; he was running for her-for them.
They reached a hidden cave deeper in the woods, one that Selene had known about since childhood. It was a place of safety, a place where she could think clearly without the constant pressure of her pack's laws.
Once inside, she collapsed against the cool stone, her breath coming in gasps. Luca crouched beside her, his eyes scanning the woods outside, always alert.
"I don't know how much longer I can keep running, Selene," he said, his voice low and strained. "The pack will find me eventually. They always do."
"I don't care," she replied fiercely. "I'll protect you. I won't let them take you again."
Luca's eyes softened, his hand brushing against her cheek. "You don't understand. If they find us together... they'll kill us both."
She swallowed hard, the weight of his words sinking in. But she wouldn't back down. Not now. Not when she had finally found the one person who understood her in ways no one else ever could.
"Then we'll run," she whispered. "We'll leave it all behind."
Luca's eyes burned with a mixture of love and sorrow. He cupped her face gently in his hands, his thumb tracing the outline of her lips. "You would do that for me?"
"For us," she corrected, her voice steady despite the uncertainty that loomed. "I'll do anything for us."
The cave was quiet, save for the sound of their breathing. Outside, the moon climbed higher in the sky, casting a soft light through the entrance. Selene knew that they couldn't stay hidden forever. But in that moment, with Luca's warm presence beside her, it felt as though the rest of the world had vanished.
For the first time in her life, she wasn't alone.
