Chapter 1 The Unlikely Beginning

The Unlikely Beginning

Emma Walker had always prided herself on her professionalism. As an executive assistant at Harper & Montgomery, a prestigious law firm, she had carved out a reputation for being meticulous, reliable, and incredibly organized.

No one could ever accuse Emma of mixing business with pleasure. She kept her work life separate from her personal life, a boundary she maintained with fierce determination. It was easy for her-work was work, and everything else was secondary. That was, until Lucas Harper walked into her life. Lucas was everything Emma wasn't.

He was a senior associate at the firm, sharp and highly ambitious but also charming and effortlessly likable. He was the kind of person who could light up a room with his smile, a skill that made him an effective lawyer and an incredibly frustrating colleague. While Emma thrived in the quiet and structured world of office management, Lucas thrived in the chaos of legal battles and high-profile cases.

When the firm assigned Lucas to collaborate with Emma on a critical case involving a corporate merger, she was less than thrilled. She had worked with others on similar cases before, but there was something about Lucas that unsettled her. Maybe it was his innate confidence or the way he made every conversation feel more like a performance than a discussion. Still, she couldn't deny that his presence added a certain energy to the office.

At first, their collaboration was purely professional. Lucas needed Emma's organizational skills to keep the case files in order, and she needed his legal expertise to navigate the complicated case details. It was a symbiotic relationship, but nothing more.

However, Emma quickly noticed that their partnership grew more effortless with time. Lucas made her laugh with his dry sense of humor, while she admired the way he could win over clients with his persuasive arguments and charm. Despite herself, Emma began looking forward to their daily interactions. At first, she dismissed it as a professional connection, but as their collaboration deepened, she realized that she enjoyed his company in a way she hadn't expected. Each day, Lucas would share snippets of his life outside work-his hobbies, his travels, his dreams for the future.

And Emma, though she was usually private, found herself sharing more than she intended. The conversations they had, though centered around work, sometimes veered into more personal territory. She was starting to wonder if there was something more to their connection, but she was determined not to entertain the idea. One late evening, after a particularly stressful meeting, Lucas suggested they grab a drink to unwind. Emma hesitated at first, unsure if it was appropriate or if it would lead to complications. She knew better than to get too close to a colleague, but the idea of spending a little more time with him outside the office felt strangely appealing. They found a quiet bar downtown, just around the corner from the office.

The ambiance was low-key, with soft jazz music playing in the background and a faint murmur of voices from other patrons. They sat at the bar, each with a drink in hand, and began to talk-not about work, but about their lives. Lucas spoke of his childhood in a small town, his passion for hiking, and his love for old movies.

Emma shared stories about her family, her quiet evenings spent reading, and her growing sense of satisfaction from a job well done. For the first time in what felt like forever, Emma let her guard down completely. As they laughed over shared experiences, something changed. It wasn't the sudden spark of romance, but a subtle shift.

A deeper connection formed between them, one that neither of them had anticipated. They both began to realize that they were not simply colleagues anymore. The chemistry between them was palpable, though neither was willing to admit it at first. They had crossed an invisible line, one that would eventually lead them into uncharted waters.

My name is Katia, and I am just trying to survive until my fated mate arrives. Which may be easier said than done. Rejectection is the last straw. Whispering my acceptance of his rejection. I run through the pack house, out across the manicured lawn into the forest. "I'm sorry, my sweet girl," I say to my wolf. I'm sorry you have been stuck with me and have had to suffer everything I have. She whispers," it's not your fault, Katia. We came to a cliff with a waterfall. The hurt keeps pounding at me. I need it to stop. My sweet girl, and I just want peace, I keep running and leap off the cliff. Spreading my arms wide, with tears streaming down my face, I fall, not making a sound, waiting for sweet oblivion where we feel nothing ever again. "I love you, my sweet girl! Until we meet again, "My wolf replied just before we hit the water, "I love you too, Katia. I have never regretted a moment with you." The Snow Moon pack is having their last barbecue of the summer next to the waterfall on their land. The adults are laughing and joking while watching the pups play. The alpha, beta, and gamma are swimming with some of the older children and playing a game of Marco Polo. Someone yells, "Oh my goddess, someone just jumped over the waterfall!" Everyone is frozen as they watch what looks to be a child falling arms spread wide, no one makes a sound. The small body hits the water like a plane crashing into the side of a mountain. The alpha, beta, and gamma, spring into action, swimming towards the area the person went under. The alpha is screaming his wolf is going crazy repeating, "Find her. Find her...find her!" They dive and the beta surfaces with a small person in his arms. Alpha takes the girl from his beta, laying her on the ground. The men are shocked by what they see. She is covered in scars and injuries. Her body is twisted and broken. The Beta asks, "Who could have done this to someone so defenseless?" Alpha drops to his knees, repeating, "MATE...MATE...MATE!"
