Chapter 1 Heartbreak and Whiskey

Chapter One: Heartbreak and Whiskey

I sat at the corner of the dimly lit bar, my fingers wrapped tightly around a glass of whiskey. The ice clinked softly against the glass as I swirled the amber liquid, lost in the rhythmic motion. I barely tasted the sharp burn of alcohol as it slid down my throat. I didn't care. Nothing could burn worse than the ache in my chest.

Three years. I had wasted three years of my life on Liam Steele. Three years of empty promises, meaningless gestures, and a love I had poured my entire soul into.

And for what? To find him tangled in sheets with someone else--my coworker, no less.

The image replayed in my mind like a cruel movie, each detail stabbing me like a jagged knife. His smug, apologetic grin.

The girl's awkward attempt to cover herself with the sheets. And the worst part--his words.

"It didn't mean anything, Sophia. Don't be so dramatic."

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out the memory. But the anger bubbled to the surface again, hot and unforgiving.

How could I have been so blind? So stupid?

"Another?" the bartender asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I glanced at my empty glass and nodded.

"Make it a double this time."

The bartender gave me a sympathetic look but didn't press for details. Moments later, he slid the drink in front of me, and I took a long sip, relishing the warmth it brought to my otherwise cold, miserable night.

"Rough night?"

The voice was deep and smooth, carrying a hint of intrigue. I glanced to my left and froze.

The man sitting a seat away from me was unlike anyone I'd ever seen. He was older, maybe in his forties, but there was a rugged sophistication about him that made my heart skip a beat. Salt-and-pepper hair framed a chiseled jawline, and his gray eyes sparkled with curiosity under the dim light. His tailored suit fit him perfectly, exuding wealth and power in an understated way.

"Something like that," I replied, my voice cooler than I felt.

The man studied me for a moment, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Care to share?"

let out a bitter laugh. "Not unless you want to hear about how I wasted three years of my life on a cheating bastard."

"Ah." He leaned back slightly, his expression thoughtful. "Then let me guess: he made you feel special, promised you the world, and betrayed you when you least expected it."

I blinked at him, surprised by his accuracy.

"How did you-"

"Because men like that are predictable," he said simply. "And women like you deserve better."

The compliment caught me off guard. I wasn't sure whether it was the whiskey or the way his eyes seemed to pierce through my defenses, but for the first time that night, I felt a flicker of something other than anger or sadness.

"And what about you?" I asked, tilting my head. "Are you one of those predictable men?"

His smile widened, revealing a hint of charm beneath his otherwise stoic demeanor. "No. I'm the man who teaches women like you to stop wasting time on boys."

The boldness of his words sent a thrill down my spine.

I shouldn't entertain this stranger, I knew that. But the way he looked at me, as if I were the only person in the room, made me feel seen in a way I hadn't felt in years.

"I'm Alexander," he said, extending his hand.

"Sophia," I replied, shaking his hand. His grip was firm, his touch warm, and I found myself lingering for a moment longer than necessary.

For the next hour, we talked. Or rather, I vented while Alexander listened. I told him about Liam, my job, and how l'd spent so long trying to please everyone but myself.

He offered no judgment, just the occasional wry comment that made me laugh despite myself.

When my glass was empty again, I leaned back and sighed. "You're surprisingly good at this."

"At what?"

"Making me forget I'm miserable."

Alexander's eyes darkened slightly, his gaze dropping to my lips. "Maybe that's because you're not as miserable as you think. Maybe you just needed the right company."

My breath hitched at the intensity in his voice. The air between us shifted, charged with a tension that sent a shiver down my spine. I knew where this was heading, and for once, I didn't want to stop it.

"I think I've had enough to drink." I said softly.

"Agreed." Alexander stood and held out his hand. "But the night doesn't have to end here."

hesitated, my heart pounding in my chest.

This was crazy. I didn't even know him. But as I looked into his piercing gray eyes, I made a decision. For once, I wasn't going to overthink it. I was going to let myself feel.

Taking his hand, I let him lead me out of the bar and into the cool night air.

The ride to his penthouse was a blur of anticipation. By the time we stepped into the elevator, the tension between us was unbearable.

Alexander pinned me against the mirrored wall, his hands framing my face as his lips crashed into mine. The kiss was fiery and demanding, stealing my breath and every coherent thought. I responded with equal fervor, my fingers tangling in his hair as I pressed closer.

"You're stunning," he murmured against my lips, his voice thick with desire.

I gasped as his lips trailed down my neck, leaving a trail of heat in their wake. Every touch, every kiss ignited a fire within me, burning away the pain of the past.

When the elevator doors opened, he swept me into his arms, carrying me across the threshold of his suite. The city lights cast a soft glow across the room, but I barely noticed. All I could focus on was him-the way he looked at me, touched me, made me feel alive.

Clothes disappeared piece by piece as we made our way to the bedroom. Alexander's hands roamed my body with a reverence that made me shiver, and when he finally laid me down on the plush bed, I felt like I was falling apart and coming together all at once.

'I want to hear you," he whispered, his voice low and commanding.

And hear me, he did.
