Chapter 1 The Impromptu meeting

**JESS**

Waking up early has always been such a hassle to me. I am definitely not a morning person, but whenever I remember the position I occupy in the office and the hefty pay and bonuses that come with it, I know better than to appear late at work.

I stare at my alarm as it rings for the third time this morning before putting it off to get ready for work. Today is Monday, and as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Kingston Enterprise, I have no excuse to be late.

I stretch lazily on my bed as I take 20 seconds to decide on what to do with my life.

"Should I go back to bed and sleep to my satisfaction at the expense of my salary, or should I just gather momentum and get up from this comfortable bed?"

After weighing the pros and cons of the decision I'm about to make, I decided to get my lazy ass off my bed and prepare for work. I know better than to lose my salary to 10 minutes of sleep.

I yawned as I got out of bed and into my slides, walked into my bathroom to wash my face, after which I went to my closet to pick an outfit for the day.

I settled for a blue office tank top, white pants, and blue heels. I selected my accessories (hairband, bangles, earrings, and a necklace) before going downstairs for breakfast.

I whipped up something real quick and downed it, and before 20 minutes I was done with breakfast. Me being the lazy girl that I am, I decided to take a little break before I shower; I mean, I just had breakfast.

Barely five minutes into the break, my alarm just had to remind me that I have less than 40 minutes to get to work.

"Ugh, Kingston is such a time freak," I murmured and rolled my eyes as I walked into my bathroom, asking myself if I should settle for a cold or a warm bath.

I came out a few minutes later, after settling for a warm bath, with a towel wrapped around my body and another on my hair. I took a quick glance at the wall clock and screamed.

I spent 20 minutes in the shower. How the fuck did that happen?

I quickly got into my outfit of the day after deciding to change my shoes to black, picked up my handbag, and dashed out of the house.

"Ugh, this indecision will not be the end of me." I murmured, and almost immediately I heard my phone ring.

I scoured my bag in search of my phone without realizing that my phone was ringing from a distance, and it took me a few seconds to realize that my phone was somewhere in the house.

"Fuck!!!!!!!" I ran back in search of my phone, and panic rose in my chest as I realized I couldn't find my phone.

"Where the fuck are you?" I yelled, hoping the phone would give me some sort of reply.

Fear settled in my heart as I realized my boss might be the caller. She has this habit of calling me on Monday mornings to remind me of my incompetence in time management and constant lateness to work.

But come to think of it, since the last two Mondays, she didn't call me except when necessary. She can't be the caller, right?

My phone rang again, and tracing the sound, I realized my phone was upstairs in my bedroom.

I quickly ran up the stairs to get my phone, missing a step in the process, and I fell to my doom.

This only increased my anger and frustration, and I yelled at myself.

"WTF Jess, such a clumsy fool." I instantly got angry for calling myself clumsy.

I heard my phone ring for the third time, and I stood up from the floor to go get the phone only to realize that my left heel is broken. WTF!!!!

I took off the shoes and flung them to one side of the sitting room and ran up the stairs with my bare feet, making sure I didn't trip again.

I successfully got to the room and picked up my phone, and immediately I saw the caller; my fears were confirmed. It was indeed my boss.

I straightened my back and picked up the call, immense fear in my heart.

"Good morning, ma'am. Jessica Speaking"

"You know how much I hate incompetence, Jessica. Why do I have to call you three times on a Monday morning to remind you of the meeting we have with Blackwood corporations?"

"Oh my God, I'm sorry, Ma, I totally forgot about..."

"Of course you forgot. We have barely 30 minutes before the meeting. Mr. Jayson called in this morning and asked that three people represent him. Something came up, and he'll be late. I already informed Michael and Jane. They are on their way. You are obviously the third representative. I'll text you the location immediately; get your lazy self there and represent us well. I don't want any complaints about being late or incompetent. Am I understood?"

"Yes, ma'am, but..."

"No buts. Jess I know it's impromptu, but you can do it. I mean, you're one of our best; my only problem with you is time management."

"Ma I know nothing about the meeting with Blackwood Corp; I mean, Mr. Jayson kept me out of it for a reason," I sighed. I hate impromptu meetings, especially external ones.

"Well, reasons best known to him, but he asked me to put you on. Reach out to the others; they are well prepared for the meeting. Enough of the questions, Jess; get to work."

And just like that, she disconnects the call.

"Fuck you!!!!!" I yell as I stomp my feet on the floor. This woman just knows how to spoil my day.

I am so pissed right now that I can kill my boss, but I don't have that time. I checked the location she sent to me and I thanked my stars. It's a 20-minute ride.

I changed into another pair of black heels and went downstairs.

Left with no choice, I called Michael, and while he explained everything to me, I got into my car and headed for the location.
