The father is critically ill, but my husband, as the attending physician, is traveling with his first love. He takes care of her in every way and even blames me for not being understanding. After my father passes away, I become understanding and decide to support him and his first love by filing for divorce. Yet, he cries and says he doesn't want to.
On the day of my father, David Ford's funeral, it was raining cats and dogs outside.
With my mother having passed away long ago and the remaining relatives not being close, I was left alone to handle all the details of the funeral.
At the hospital, I watched as my father's body was covered with a white sheet.
Then, I followed the funeral home staff to deal with the various processes.
It wasn't until I was at the graveyard that I finally had a moment to breathe and gather my thoughts.
Colleagues and friends attending the funeral kept asking me, "Why isn't Josh here?"
"He's been on leave these past few days and didn't come to work. How could he not attend his father-in-law's funeral?"
But when they saw my calm expression, they quickly retracted their words.
Indeed, why wasn't Josh Spencer here?
As my father's apprentice, he should have come to help.
As my husband, he should have been here to stay with me.
Yet, he wasn't.
With a heavy heart, I dialed his number again, only to be met with a busy signal.
A friend from my department came over to comfort me, "Josh might have something important going on."
I tried to console myself too, thinking Josh was just busy.
After all, besides his work at the hospital, Josh was trying to start a business with his college friends.
But when I had a moment to check social media, I saw him in a post Kate Harrison had just shared.
The people in the photo were her college friends, and Kate was standing very close to Josh, looking very much like a couple.
So, his "important matter" was celebrating Kate's birthday.
I could no longer deceive myself.
The irony hit me hard.
I looked up at the sky outside.
The sky was gloomy, and I caught the large raindrops falling from above with my hand.
I managed a bitter smile as tears mingled with the rain.
"Dad, there's no one left to love me anymore."
