Chapter 1

In the fifth year of being with Terry Clarke, I, Sylvie Patel, discovered that he already had a child who was a year old.

Their family had a great time at the child's birthday party.

When Terry saw me, he smirked dismissively, "Don't worry, no one will call you a home wrecker."

I smiled back, turned around, and left.

He was confident that a few sweet words would placate me, until Richard Wallace, the eldest son of Wallace's Group, sent out a wedding invitation to him.

On a stormy night, Terry was banging furiously on the door of the Wallace's villa.

I opened the door, glancing at him who was like a defeated dog, and said impatiently, "Sorry, I don't deal with a home wrecker."

1

At the lively family banquet, an adorable little child sat at the center.

Terry, the guy I regarded as boyfriend for five years, was seated to the child's left, looking cheerful.

A well-dressed woman sat on the other side, spoon-feeding the child.

Mrs. Clarke and Mr. Clarke were also present, the family sharing joy and warmth.

I gazed at this warm family gathering spanning three generations, feeling a bit dazed.

"Miss, who are you looking for?"

A waiter asked, seeing me standing at the door of the private room.

Suddenly, the room fell silent, and everyone turned their eyes on me who was at a loss for words.

It wasn't until the elegant woman chuckled that Terry leisurely stood up and pulled me outside the room.

With a mocking smile, he was indifferent to being caught cheating.

"That's Cecily, the only daughter of the Smith family. Our families have been close for generations.

With our family backgrounds, you understand, it's not about marrying whoever we want.

You've always been sensible, you should understand me."

Terry and I got together back in college, and it's been five years now.

He was a spoiled heir of a rich family, and a very philandering one at that.

Even after being with me, he was constantly surrounded by girls. He was such a true playboy, embarrassing me and making me endure criticism.

As for why he was with a poor girl like me, he said it was because I was sensible and knew my place, and it seemed like I would be a good housewife.

I laughed at myself, "When did you two start?"

Terry raised an eyebrow casually, "Does it matter? Probably almost two years ago, and the child just turned one."

I took off the necklace he had given me a few days ago.

"This is the only thing you gave me, I was returning it to you. The rest, I'll pack and send to your house."

Terry took the necklace, twirled it around his finger, and raised an eyebrow, "I never said I wanted to break up with you. Don't worry, no one will dare call you a home wrecker."

I replied calmly, "From now on, you live your life as the heir, and I'll live mine as an ordinary person. We'll stay out of each other's way."

Terry's expression changed, "Sylvie, you better know what you're saying."

"I know exactly."

With that, I turned and left, feeling a sense of liberation.

I had wanted to say those words for a long time.

"Terry, what's so good about this Sylvie? She doesn't even appreciate your kindness!"

I heard Mrs. Clarke's voice from the private room as I walked away.

"Mom, after all, I've married and had a child with someone else. It's only natural for Sylvie to be upset. But I'm sure she'll come back once she's calmed down."

"Don't be confused about priorities. Remember, Cecily is your wife, and we need her family's influence for our project in the west."

"I know, Mom. The child is born; no father-in-law wouldn't help his son-in-law."

2

I wandered aimlessly on the street, eventually ending up in a bar.

How could I not be sad?

The calm demeanor was just a facade.

I ordered a whiskey and sat at the bar, sipping slowly.

In just an hour, more than ten men tried to chat me up.

None of them caught my eyes. They either weren't as handsome as Terry or didn't have his charming voice.

Terry, I tried not to think about my ex-boyfriend.

But the more I drank, the more I thought of him.

Back in college, my mom needed heart surgery, and we were short 150, 000 dollars.

That was when Terry appeared.

Sometimes, I felt I was sold to him for that money.

"Sylvie, is that you?"

I squinted up at a tall, slender man standing in the light, unable to see his face clearly. He wore a cool-toned shirt, casually unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a delicate collarbone.

His narrow waist was tucked into dress pants, leading down to long, straight legs.

I swallowed hard.

Now that I was single, I might as well enjoy myself.

"Do you know me?"

I swirled the drink in my glass.

"Have you had too much to drink? You don't even recognize me. I pursued you back in college."

The man leaned closer.

Only then did I recognize him as Richard Wallace, a junior three years younger than me.

I took a slow sip of my drink, licking my lips, and gazed at him with a dreamy look.

Richard's Adam's apple bobbed.

I smirked, "Want to come over to my place?"

We were all adults in our twenties, there was no need to spell everything out.

Richard's eyes darkened, his black pupils seemed to absorb all the light.

For a moment, we were silent, and I regretted my blunt words.

I must be really drunk.

"Glad to go."

Just when I thought he might refuse, he said softly, with a hint of barely noticeable delight.

3

Everything happened.

The house was empty when I woke up. I checked my phone and saw a message from Richard.

[You were sleeping soundly, so I didn't wake you. I went to work. Remember to have lunch.]

I chuckled. Was Richard still an innocent kid?

There was no need for any aftercare.

I intended to nap a bit longer, but someone knocked on the door.

I dragged myself up, dressed, and opened the door to find Terry standing there.

This small house with two rooms and one living-room was rented by me. Terry knew the address, but never came, this was his first time here.

"A rare guest indeed."

I realized my voice was hoarse as I spoke.

Terry looked puzzled, "Did you just wake up?"

"What does it have to do with you? Terry, we've broken up."

"Still angry, huh? Did you drown your sorrows last night, and that's why you're just getting up now?"

I smiled, "Yes, and with a handsome guy too."

With that, I slammed the door shut.

Seeing the ex-boyfriend was the first thing in the morning, what bad luck!

"Sylvie, explain yourself!"

For the first time, Terry was left outside my door, so he was frustrated.

"Stop pretending. Don't I know you? You're just trying to provoke me, and make me jealous. That's all you women know how to do."

Terry was still the same, always looking down on others.

"I'll take you to the hot springs resort in a few days. Stop making a fuss. That is enough."

He continued to ramble at the door for a while before leaving, confident that I was just sulking.

4

I went back to sleep and didn't wake up until evening, roused by the aroma of food.

"You finally decided to get up?"

I stared in disbelief at the scene before me.

Richard was bustling around the kitchen in an apron, occasionally glancing at me with a hint of grievance.

The dining table was set with two dishes and a soup, still steaming-the source of the enticing aroma that woke me.

"Have a glass of water first."

Richard handed me a glass of warm water, gently smoothing my messy hair.

Uh...

I was momentarily at a loss for what was happening.

"Are you still thinking about Terry? The marriage between his family and the Smith family has been an open secret in the business circle for a while now."

So it wasn't a secret after all.

"Ha, seems like I'm the last to know. His friends never mentioned it to me, and their attitude was so nice as if I was his wife.'"

Richard frowned, his expression turning serious, "I thought you knew all along and stayed with him out of love. But it turns out... "

I laughed at myself, skillfully lighting a cigarette.

Richard's frown deepened, "I should have come sooner to express my feelings."

"What?"

His words were out of context, and I didn't catch them.

"Terry doesn't deserve you. Could you consider me? I've liked you since college, senior Patel.

I can cook, do housework, and I'm quite skilled on the bed, aren't I?"

Richard, taller than me by a head, leaned in, trapping me with his arms, his dark eyes staring down at me.

For a moment, I felt like prey caught in a hunter's sight, nervous, but thrilling.

Loving someone was exhausting, maybe it was time to try being loved.

"Marriage, you mean?"

My voice trembled as the words left my mouth.

"Sure."

Richard quickly replied.

The next morning, we went to register our marriage and got the marriage certificate in our hands. Richard even bought me a bouquet of roses from a small stall.

Just two days ago, I have just become a mistress from the original girlfriend. And today, I got a marriage certificate with a man I thought was just a fleeting romance.

It felt like I was dreaming.

"Richard, don't you think this is unfair?"

I asked him hesitantly, looking at the marriage certificate in my hand.

"Well, it's a bit late for second thoughts now." Richard tapped my head lightly with the certificate. "You'll have to make it up to me in the future."

It was only later that I understood what he meant by "make it up."

We took a month off, claiming it was for a honeymoon on an island, but we spent most of the time in the hotel.

Richard always gave me those puppy-dog eyes. What could I do but indulge him?

5

The honeymoon flew by, and I hadn't felt so relaxed and content in a long time.

One day, while we were surfing on a sun-drenched beach, I unexpectedly received a call from Terry's mother.

"Sylvie, come to the Reunion Restaurant tonight. I have something to discuss with you."

She was as arrogant as her son, always speaking to me as if I were a servant.

"Mrs. Clarke, if there's something you need, just say it over the phone."

I replied coldly, knowing she never truly acknowledged me over the years.

Mrs. Clarke seemed surprised by my indifferent tone and paused before saying, "How long are you and Terry going to keep up this breakup charade? Terry's been eating less because of you, and he's lost weight."

Uh huh.

I couldn't help but laugh.

"What do you mean?"

Mrs. Clarke's tone turned ominous.

"Mrs. Clarke, I'm not Terry's wife. It's not my duty to take care of Terry, and I wouldn't want to take on responsibilities that aren't mine."

My mood was light, the shadow of Terry's betrayal long dispelled by Richard's daily sweet words and actions.

"Sylvie, I understand your resentment. No woman would feel comfortable being deceived by someone she loves."

Mrs. Clarke's tone softened.

"But you know, in a family like ours, we can't let someone with no background like you in.

However, Terry's father and I aren't heartless. Since you've been with Terry for so long, we can't just kick you out.

How about this, if you give Terry a son, I'll acknowledge you as my daughter-in-law."

This time, I was genuinely amused by her audacity.

"Mrs. Clarke, you're so... generous. You want to share your precious son between two women just for a grandson of the Clarke family?"

It seemed Cecily, despite being the only daughter of a wealthy family, still didn't win Mrs. Clarke's favor because she failed to give birth to a grandson.

"Mrs. Clarke, I'm leaving on my own. No need for you to kick me out."

Thankfully, I didn't marry into such a family.

But what kind of people were Richard's parents?

As I was lost in thought, Mrs. Clarke suddenly brought up an old matter.

"Sylvie, don't push your luck. If it weren't for Terry giving you 150, 000 dollars back then, your mother wouldn't have been able to have surgery."

That was true.

But for these five years, knowing that he was out there entangled with other women, I have been always enduring and selflessly devoted to him, for which I felt I had repaid that debt.

"Mrs. Clarke, I transferred the 150, 000 dollars plus interest to Terry's account a few days ago. With countless business transactions, he might not have noticed. You should remind him to check his messages.

Also, I've kept all the gifts he gave me over the years because I knew there would be a day to return them. I'll ask a friend to send them back soon."

"Sylvie, think carefully! This is your closest chance to a wealthy life!"

Ridiculous.

"Well, I'm not interested, so don't call again."

I hung up the phone and blocked her number.

Richard, who had been quietly listening, looked at me with a hint of sadness. "I wish I had been there back then."

I smiled but said nothing.

"Actually, I'm from a wealthy family too."

Richard suddenly said, holding me close.

What?

I only knew Richard was well-off, but I never saw him surrounded by beautiful women or hanging out with a bad crowd.

"Who says all rich kids sure have bad friends and a string of girlfriends? Not everyone is like Terry."

Richard laughed helplessly, rubbing his chin against the top of my head.

"They're just not lucky enough to have you in the Clarke family. From now on, you'll be the daughter-in-law of the Wallace family."

6

As soon as the plane back from the island landed and I turned off airplane mode, my phone buzzed with a series of missed calls.

They were from Terry, "Sylvie, what do you mean by sending those things over? You just want to keep making a fuss, don't you?"

I chuckled coldly, "On the contrary, you and me have been over for a while. It ended the day I saw your whole family of five at the restaurant."

I considered blocking Terry as well, since I'd already returned everything to him.

"Why are you acting superior? It's not the first time you've seen me with someone else. Why are you so relentless this time? Let me warn you, my patience has limits. If you're trying to play hard to get, be careful not to overplay your hand!"

I rolled my eyes so hard they nearly got stuck. "Are you out of your mind?"

I could just imagine the expression on Terry's face.

"Terry, let me tell you one last time, we're done. Please stop sticking to me like glue."

A sharp noise came through the phone, "Sylvie, what the hell did you just say?"

Before he could finish, I hung up.

Hearing Terry lose his temper was oddly satisfying.

Back home, I couldn't resist venting about Terry, that jerk, so I called up my best friend Kate Marshall to meet at a bar.

"You really broke up with Terry? Good for you!"

Kate downed a pint of stout in one go, even happier than I was.

"I used to turn a blind eye, thinking rich people like him just liked to have fun. I never thought he'd turn me from his girlfriend to a mistress."

I couldn't help but gulp down a glass of cold beer myself.

"I heard the woman Terry married, Cecily, is a force to be reckoned with. Even their daughter took her surname. But given how Terry's family favors boys over girls, they probably don't care much about a daughter anyway."

Kate kept ranting, while my mind wandered to Richard.

The night I met Richard was also at this bar.

"Kate, I'm married."

Kate's eyes widened in disbelief until I showed her a photo of the marriage certificate.

"Richard? Is he that junior who was chasing after you?" Kate looked utterly shocked, "He's the heartthrob of his major and the heir to Wallace's Group!"

"Huh? Wallace's Group belongs to his family?"

Kate held her forehead, "You married him without knowing anything?"

I laughed awkwardly, "At the time... I was a bit impulsive. I just knew he seemed like a good man to live with."

Wallace's Group was now mainly run by Richard's eldest sister, Corinna Wallace, while their father had basically retired.

Richard and Corinna, they are siblings? I never made the connection between them.

Kate and I clinked glasses again and again, stumbling to the restroom in a tipsy haze.

Splashing cold water on my face, I finally felt a bit more sober.

Just then, a girl walked in, wearing a necklace that looked all too familiar.

Wasn't that the limited-edition necklace I returned to Terry?

Coincidentally, we walked back together, and she sat down right next to Terry.

She stumbled and sat down right next to someone, which was none other than Terry.

He was slouched on the sofa, his shirt unbuttoned to his chest, revealing several red marks-clearly, something had just happened.

When he looked up and saw me, his eyes lit up, "Sylvie? You actually followed me here. I knew you couldn't let me go."

Terry's good friend, Henry Lambert, quickly stood up and ushered me to sit next to Terry.

"Sylvie, come sit here. It was true that Terry was wrong about that incident earlier, and we have blamed him."

The girl leaned closer to Terry, looking all delicate and helpless.

"Terry, who is she?"

I glanced at the necklace around her neck and smiled, "Terry, the necklace I returned to you, you sure know how to recycle."

The girl's face turned bad as she realized what I meant.

Terry raised an eyebrow, "Feeling jealous again? I'll buy you a more expensive one."

I pulled out a diamond ring from my pocket and slipped it on. It was the one Richard gave me on the island.

One morning, I woke up to find it on my ring finger, sparkling in the dawn light.

"The wedding was a bit rushed, so I didn't have time to get you a ring. I'm giving it to you now. We'll pick out matching rings together when we get back, "

Richard had said, kissing my forehead.

It was such a large diamond that I didn't want to wear it and draw attention, so I kept it in my pocket.

I gently stroked the diamond and smirked, "No need. From now on, if I want something, someone will give it to me."

Terry's face darkened, "What's that?"

"A diamond ring. Don't you recognize it?"

Terry kicked over the coffee table in front of him and stood up abruptly, "How dare you betray me?"
