My boyfriend hasn't messaged me in four days. Today, I scrolled through social media and saw that he got engaged, claiming that the other party is the daughter of a real estate mogul. Chapter 1

My boyfriend hadn't sent me any messages for four days.

Today, I scrolled through Facebook and saw that he got engaged.

He claimed that his fiancée was the daughter of a real estate mogul.

However, the background in the photo was clearly my living room.

And the people standing beside the girl, who are supposed to be her parents, were my housekeeper and driver.

On the fourth day after losing contact with Kevin Black, I saw the news of his engagement announcement on social media.

He never failed to contact me for such a long time. We had been in love for three years, and we had almost a fixed time to talk on the phone every day.

A week ago, he said he was going back to Bunnon to visit his parents, and we agreed that we would start preparing for our wedding when he came back.

Now, he announced his engagement to someone else on Facebook.

I was stiff all over, and my hands were shaking so violently that I failed to open the girl's picture several times.

Kevin's call came in precisely at that moment.

"Ava... Did you see my post on Facebook?"

"Kevin, let's meet and have a clear talk." I tried hard to hold back the anger raging inside me, yet my voice couldn't help trembling.

"I've made my intention quite clear." Kevin hung up in a hurry, as if he were afraid that I would reach into the phone and pull out his tongue.

"Ava, hasn't Kevin come back from Bunnon yet? We agreed to get together this weekend. Are we still going?" A friend's message popped up on WhatsApp just then, and that was when I began to feel something strange.

Kevin and I have many mutual friends.

Normally, if he had posted something like that, someone should have told me right away.

Why did it seem that I was the first one to know about his engagement?

I quickly clicked on the chat window and chatted with my friend for a while.

After some probing, I was almost certain that Kevin's post on Facebook was set to be visible only to me, and none of our other friends had seen it at all.

What a coward! I sneered coldly.

He didn't even dare to break up with me in person and resorted to such a disgusting way instead.

As expected, Kevin is nothing but a rat in the gutter.

After calming down for a while, I went back to the Facebook interface.

Kevin claimed that the other party was the daughter of a real estate mogul, but when I clicked on the picture, I was almost driven to tears by Kevin's stupidity.

The girl engaged to Kevin was someone I had met just last night, the daughter of our housekeeper, Luna Green.

In the photo, Luna was hugging her parents and smiling brightly, but the backdrop was my living room, and she was wearing my old clothes. Even her parents were my housekeeper and chauffeur.

I had so many clothes and jewelry that I couldn't even count them, but then I always felt that things were missing.

Things that I remembered putting somewhere would mysteriously disappear. I always thought I was just mixing up my memories, but it turned out Luna had been taking them to lure my boyfriend.

Nothing in the photo belonged to her.

Was this what Kevin called a real estate heiress?

Even my dog would wear the latest styles of clothes. But she stole clothes that were from three or four seasons ago.

Oh, and she had them on inside out.

I managed to find out about Kevin's whereabouts from our mutual friends. It was just his bad luck that the hotel where he was playing video games with friends was one of my family's business properties.

When I walked into the room, Kevin was bragging loudly about his accomplishments to his friends.

Seeing that it was me, Kevin was startled and quickly stood up from his chair, unable to speak coherently.

"Ava... what are you doing here?"

I pulled up the picture from his social media post and threw it in front of him.

"Kevin, explain yourself."

"I'm sorry, Ava. I'm engaged now. Please don't keep pestering me."

I took a deep breath. It turned out that when people were so speechless they really couldn't help laughing.

"Kevin, you're really something. You're so two-faced. Half shameless and half thick-skinned."

Even when we had arguments, no matter how mean my words were, Kevin never retorted with harsh words.

Once he had found Luna as a long-term meal ticket, his tolerance for me had naturally dropped to rock bottom.

After being mocked and taunted by me, Kevin's face took on a cold and menacing look. "Ava, I've made my point clear. Luna's family circumstances are far better than yours. You know my situation. If I don't take a gamble, I'll have no prospects. You should understand me. I have parents to take care of in their old age. Unlike you city people who can just sit around and collect pensions without doing anything. I think if you were in my shoes, you'd make the same choice. I won't blame you, so don't blame me either. Let's part amicably."

I spat in disgust.

Kevin's family was poor, even extremely poor.

The whole family supported him to go to university.

When he was courting me, apart from good grades, he had nothing going for him. Boring, plain, with no interests or hobbies other than studying.

We were opponents in a debate contest.

Kevin's access to information was very limited, and his debate thinking and viewpoints were rather old-fashioned.

Without solid data support and in-depth background investigation, our team won the victory with ease.

Later, I learned that the prize money from various competitions was Kevin's main source of livelihood.

I felt a bit guilty, but Kevin gracefully conceded defeat, and it was precisely because of his magnanimity that I began to consider accepting his pursuit.

To be fair, his family background determined that Kevin didn't have a broad vision. However, he made up for it with his hard work and had always ranked first in the whole department.

My father always taught me not to disclose too much about our family situation when outside, as it was better to be safe than sorry.

I kept this in mind, so over the years, I always presented myself as being from an ordinary family when I was in a relationship with Kevin.

Although I couldn't offer him direct financial support, I subtly influenced his perspective and way of thinking.

Kevin was much better now than the one who only knew how to study hard to earn a bit of prize money back then.

Because of this, my parents tacitly approved of our relationship, even planning to let him join our family business once things stabilized.

Kevin put on such a good show that even I was almost taken in.

In essence, he was nothing but an opportunistic, self-abased yet self-conceited phoenix man.

When he met me, compared with him, my so-called "ordinary family" background was already a leap across social classes for him, so he naturally felt at ease dating me.

However, then he firmly believed that he had found a stepping stone to the upper class, and I, his girlfriend from an ordinary family, had naturally become the biggest obstacle in his way of climbing up the social ladder.

Whenever he faced any benefit that he thought I couldn't offer, he wouldn't hesitate to cast me aside.

Unfortunately, Kevin's luck ran out. If he had kept up the pretense for just one more day, he might have achieved his dream.

But now, he was deceived by Luna, thinking she was a golden phoenix that could take him to the top of the social ladder and help him rise rapidly.

Just two impostors, really. Hiding their dirtiest thoughts from each other, they wove a magnificent dream for each other.

I couldn't wait to see how these two failed social climbers would turn on each other when the truth came out.
