Chapter 1

I noticed Kevin Davies' Facebook update. A new picture was posted, "Look, this is my son."

In the picture, he was holding a little boy and smiling brightly.

Shortly after that, the post was deleted in an instant.

That boy wasn't born by me.

Kevin said there were only six days left until he was free, and I overheard it.

It was seven o'clock in the morning, and the sky hadn't brightened up completely yet.

"Yes, yes, don't worry. Just wait another seven days and the results will be out," my husband Kevin was whispering on the balcony over the phone about something that I understood. "Yes, counting today, there are six days left. It'll be very soon."

His tone was urgent. Perhaps he was talking to one of his colleagues.

"Don't worry," his tone suddenly became very gentle. "It'll all be over soon."

I knocked on the half-opened glass door of the balcony, and he immediately hung up the phone and walked into the room.

"Kevin the weather's nice today. Why don't we take our daughter to the park?"

"We went there yesterday afternoon," Kevin said as he was putting on his coat and walking towards the door. "I have to work overtime today."

"Our daughter keeps talking about her dad all the time." I grabbed his sleeve. "Can't you take a little break from work? She misses you."

He gave a gentle tug, but when he couldn't break free, he stopped in his tracks, looked at me, and took a glance at my belly. "You're pregnant, and our expenses will be higher."

I flung his sleeve away. "Kevin, what do you mean by that?"

He didn't say a word, just kept his head down, but didn't stop putting on his shoes.

"Are you looking down on me because I'm not working?" My temper flared up at once.

"Maybe you could cut down on some unnecessary things," he replied impatiently and then turned around and left.

"Kevin, explain it to me clearly!"

All I hoped was that my daughter could have what other children have.

All I wanted was for my daughter to be dressed up beautifully every day.

Was it wrong for parents to give their children the best?

"How can you say that I'm buying things recklessly?" I raised my voice louder. "Am I spending your money? I'm pregnant, I want the best for my child, what's wrong with that?"

"It's not about the money," he also started to get angry. "You didn't even consult me about the pregnancy."

"Kevin, for whom am I having this child?" I shouted. "Isn't it for you?"

Our daughter's cries came from the adjacent room. Without looking back, he closed the door and left.

I stood there, at a loss, staring at the door, hoping that he would come back soon and give me a hug. But it was just another delusion of mine.

The sun was nice at three o'clock in the afternoon. I filled a bathtub with hot water and bathed my daughter.

"Baby, tell mommy where you got this prick, okay?" I saw a pinprick on the tip of her finger, which hadn't been there the day before yesterday.

"I don't know!" She covered her mouth and shook her head vigorously.

I smiled and playfully tapped the tip of her nose with my finger. "What happens when you tell a lie?"

"My nose grows longer," She then switched to covering her nose.

There were so many perverts nowadays, and men weren't as careful when taking care of children. What if my daughter got hurt while they were playing in the park yesterday afternoon?

"Can you tell mommy where this came from?"

"Daddy told me not to tell mommy," she replied earnestly. "I even made a pinky promise with daddy, so I can't break it."

"Little traitor, always taking your dad's side," I smiled and kissed her.

"Don't you love mommy anymore?" I pretended to be on the verge of crying.

"I do," she kissed me back.

Children couldn't keep things to themselves for long. While telling her a bedtime story, I managed to coax her into telling me about their itinerary from the afternoon before.

They went to the park first and then dropped by a hospital to have a blood test.

"Daddy said the doctor needed to examine our bodies, and if we didn't, we might have to get an injection. I didn't cry. The nurse even praised me for being so brave."

I felt dizzy all of a sudden, clutching my belly and leaning against the bed.

I never thought it would come to this.

Kevin actually took our daughter to have a paternity test to confirm whether he was really her biological father.
