Chapter 1 The Struggle and The Stranger

The bell over the door jingled as it swung open, letting in a gust of cold night air that made the warmth of the diner feel even more welcoming. Lily Monroe wiped her hands on her apron, casting a quick look at the new customer. He was tall, with dark hair and an air of quiet confidence, dressed in a well-fitted coat that looked out of place among her regulars. She barely had time to wonder who he might be before he quietly settled himself in the farthest booth by the window.

Lily quickly finished refilling Mrs. Carmichael's coffee cup and gave the elderly woman a warm smile before grabbing her notepad and heading over to the new arrival. He was focused on something outside, his expression unreadable, but his gaze softened when he noticed her approaching.

"Hi there! What can I get for you tonight?" Lily asked, flashing her usual friendly grin. She was used to late-night shifts, and she knew that a warm smile could go a long way.

He looked up at her with piercing blue eyes, a hint of something mysterious in them, though his face remained expressionless. "Coffee, please. Black."

Lily nodded, jotting it down even though she knew she wouldn't forget an order that simple. "Coming right up."

She walked back to the counter, feeling his eyes on her as she moved. She had worked in the diner long enough to know when someone was watching her, and his gaze wasn't the usual kind. It was intense, thoughtful, almost as if he were analyzing every small detail of her. She tried to ignore the odd feeling as she poured his coffee and returned to his table.

"Here you go," she said, placing the cup in front of him. "Is there anything else I can get you?"

For a moment, he didn't answer. His gaze lingered on the coffee, his fingers resting on the cup but not lifting it. Finally, he spoke, his voice deep and smooth. "No, this is fine. Thank you."

Lily nodded, giving him a polite smile before moving away, but the whole time, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye. She went about her shift, but she found her eyes drifting back to him. He didn't look like someone who usually found himself in a small diner at this time of night, and he certainly didn't blend in with the regulars. Who was he?

As the hours passed and the diner emptied, she noticed he was still there, sipping his coffee slowly, lost in his own world. Finally, as she was cleaning up for the night, he rose, left a bill on the table, and gave her a slight nod as he walked out.

"Thanks for the coffee," he murmured before heading to the door.

"Anytime," she replied, but he was already gone.

She went to clear his table, reaching for the bill he'd left, but her fingers stopped short when she noticed something glinting in the dim light. A silver pen, sleek, and unmistakably expensive, sat next to the coffee cup. Engraved on it were the initials "J.W."

Lily held the pen in her hand, feeling a strange mix of curiosity and caution. The man hadn't given her a name, but the initials were a start. She slipped the pen into her apron pocket, wondering if he'd be back.

Lily couldn't shake the memory of the man who left his pen behind. There was something magnetic, yet unsettling about him. Like he belonged to a world far removed from her modest life. Over the next few nights, she found herself looking up whenever the diner door opened, half-expecting those familiar dark eyes and unreadable expression.

And then, one evening, he came back.

The bell chimed, and there he was, wearing the same quiet composure, heading straight for the same booth. Lily grabbed her notepad, mentally steadying herself as she approached.

"Back again?" she asked with a warm, albeit curious, smile.

He looked up, a slight smile tugging at his lips. "I was hoping for more than just coffee tonight."

Lily's cheeks flushed slightly. She nodded and tried to appear casual. "Well, you're in the right place. What can I get you?"

"Surprise me," he replied, eyes lingering on her just a second too long.

She returned with his order and joined him in small talk, finding that he was more open tonight. He listened intently as she shared snippets of her day, occasionally nodding or adding a quiet comment. It wasn't much, but in that quiet space, Lily felt an odd connection.

As he prepared to leave, he looked at her, a question in his eyes.

"Do you mind if I come here again?" he asked softly.

Lily blinked, taken aback. She chuckled. "It's a public diner. You're welcome anytime."

He left a generous tip, and as he exited, Lily realized she hadn't even asked his name.

As she cleaned up his table, she found a small slip of paper with a phone number on it, scrawled in neat handwriting with the name Jaxon Wells written underneath. She felt a strange thrill. "Jaxon Wells... Who are you?"

But on that pivotal day in a Lower East Side bar, clutching my gift, my dream exploded. I overheard Jax' s cold voice: "Can't believe Savvy's showing up.
