Chapter 1 Storm

Chapter 1: The Calm Before the Storm

Her life was perfect. At least, that's what everyone told her.

She stood in front of the mirror, inspecting the elegant ivory gown she wore, a custom-made piece for her upcoming engagement party. Every stitch, every detail screamed perfection, just like everything else in her life. Her wedding was only two months away, and she had the love of her parents, the admiration of friends, and a fiancé who was every girl's dream.

Aaron Lawrence. The name alone brought her instant recognition and respect. His family was powerful, influential, and extremely wealthy. People said they were a match made in heaven,he, the charming heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire, and she, the beautiful, well-mannered daughter of a prestigious family.

"Miss, the stylist is here to discuss the final hair and makeup look for the engagement party."

She blinked, pulled from her thoughts by the soft knock on her door. "Coming," she replied, turning from the mirror. Before leaving, she glanced back at her reflection, that faint unease from earlier still lurking at the back of her mind. Everything was falling into place, just like it always did. So why did it feel like something was missing?

Her home was grand, opulent, but it had always been warm. The spacious halls lined with family portraits, the smell of freshly cut roses from the garden, the familiar clink of china from the dining room... It all felt so safe, so predictable.

Yet, there was something off lately. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but the feeling lingered. Maybe it was the wedding pressure, or maybe it was that odd conversation she overheard between her parents last week.

She shook the thoughts away. It was probably nothing. Her parents had always been open with her, honest, even. They loved her unconditionally, and that's all that mattered.

As she descended the grand staircase, she found her parents sitting in the parlor, deep in discussion about the engagement party details. Her mother's face lit up when she saw her.

"There's our beautiful bride-to-be!" she exclaimed, rushing over to straighten the delicate lace on her daughter's gown. "What do you think? Is the dress everything you imagined?"

Her father, ever the quiet observer, sat back with a proud smile. "You look stunning, darling."

"Thank you, both of you." She beamed, the warmth of their love chasing away the last of her doubts. They had always treated her like the center of their world, giving her everything she ever wanted, and for that, she was grateful.

They moved on to the day's agenda, discussing final touches for the engagement party, flowers, guest lists, venue arrangements. Her mother was meticulous, ensuring everything would be flawless.

Her mind wandered again as her parents talked, though, and she barely registered her mother calling her name.

"Sweetheart?" Her mother's voice broke through her thoughts. "What do you think about adding peonies to the bouquet?"

"Sorry," she said, shaking herself out of her daze. "Peonies sound perfect."

Her mother looked at her, a trace of concern crossing her features. "You've seemed distracted lately. Is everything alright? Wedding stress getting to you?"

She forced a smile. "Yeah, I guess so. Just a lot to think about." She didn't want to admit that something felt wrong, especially when she couldn't even explain it. It was all in her head. The pressure of the upcoming wedding was playing tricks on her, that's all.

Her father chimed in, his voice calm and reassuring. "You've got nothing to worry about, darling. Everything is going to be perfect. Just focus on enjoying the process."

She nodded, trying to let the reassurance settle in. Everything was perfect. It had to be.

#Later That Evening#

The restaurant was their favorite, intimate, exclusive, hidden away from the city's prying eyes. As always, Aaron had made sure everything was flawless, reserving the private dining area where no one could disturb them.

He was waiting for her when she arrived, standing by the window, looking as dashing as ever in his tailored suit. His tall frame, chiseled features, and effortless charm always turned heads. But tonight, it was just the two of them.

"How's my beautiful fiancée?" he asked with that warm smile that made her heart flutter every time.

She smiled back, letting his presence soothe the anxiety that had been gnawing at her all day. "I'm good. Just a bit overwhelmed with the wedding planning."

He chuckled, pulling her into a hug. "That's what wedding planners are for. Don't stress about it too much. You'll be the most beautiful bride, and I'll be the luckiest man in the world."

She leaned into him, feeling safe in his embrace, but the nagging feeling still lingered. She had everything, Aaron, her loving family, her dream wedding on the horizon-so why did it feel like something was slipping away?

As they sat down to dinner, they talked about the wedding, their future, and their plans to travel after the honeymoon. Aaron was always so sure of everything, so confident in their future. It was comforting, but tonight, it only made her feel more out of place, as if she were an outsider watching her own life unfold.

"Are you sure everything's alright?" Aaron asked, reaching across the table to take her hand. "You've been quiet lately."

She hesitated, not wanting to burden him with her worries. "Yeah, just pre-wedding jitters, I guess."

He smiled, squeezing her hand. "It's normal. But you know, no matter what, we're in this together."

She nodded, forcing herself to believe it. He was right, everything was fine. It was just her imagination running wild.

That night when she got back home, lying in bed, she couldn't shake the strange feeling that had settled deep in her chest. Her dreams were restless, filled with shadowy figures and whispered words that she couldn't quite understand. She tossed and turned, waking up several times, her heart pounding in her chest.

In the silence of her room, she stared up at the ceiling, trying to calm herself down. It's nothing, she told herself again. Just nerves. Everything is perfect.

But as the minutes ticked by, she couldn't help but feel like something was about to shatter her perfect world, and she had no idea what it was.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
