Chapter 1 The Proposal

Emily stared out the window of her family's opulent mansion, her mind racing with the weight of her responsibilities. As the sole heir to the family business, she had always known that her life would be one of duty and obligation. But she had never imagined that it would involve marrying a stranger.

The mansion's gardens stretched out before her, perfectly manicured and eerily silent. She felt trapped, like a bird in a gilded cage. Her parents' voices drifted from the living room, their words indistinguishable but their tone unmistakable - stern, serious, and unyielding.

"Emily, darling, come sit down," her mother called, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "We have something important to discuss."

Emily turned to face her mother, who was seated on the plush couch in the center of the room. Her father stood beside her, his expression stern. The air was thick with tension, heavy with unspoken expectations.

"What is it, Mother?" Emily asked, her heart sinking. She knew that tone, that look. It meant her life was about to change forever.

"We've arranged for you to marry Charles Thompson," her father announced, his voice firm. "The wedding will take place in two weeks."

Emily felt like she had been punched in the gut. She struggled to breathe, her mind reeling. "What? Why?"

"It's a business arrangement, Emily, " her mother explained, her voice smooth as silk. "The Thompson have a significant stake in our company, and this marriage will secure our partnership."

Emily knew that arguing would be futile. She had no choice but to accept the arrangement. Her parents had always made it clear that her duty was to the family business, above all else.

"But I don't even know him," Emily protested, a spark of defiance igniting within her.

"You'll get to know him soon enough," her father said, his expression unyielding. "Richard is a good man, Emily. He'll make a fine husband."

Emily doubted that. She had heard rumors about Charles Thompson- ruthless, cunning, and calculating. Not exactly the kind of man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.

And what about love? Didn't that count for anything? But she knew better than to mention it. Her parents didn't believe in romantic love, only in strategic alliances and power plays.

Emily felt like she had been punched in the gut. "What? Why?" she repeated, trying to process the sudden announcement.

Her mother's expression turned cold. "Don't question this, Emily. It's for the good of the family. The Thompsons have a significant stake in our company, and this marriage will secure our partnership."

Emily's mind raced. She had heard of Charles Thompson, of course - who hadn't? He was the eldest son of the wealthy and influential Thompson family. But she had never met him, never even seen a picture.

"What's he like?" Emily asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

Her father cleared his throat. "Charles is a capable and intelligent young man. He'll make a good husband and business partner."

Emily felt a surge of panic. This was her life they were talking about, her future. She didn't want to be married off to some stranger, no matter how capable and intelligent he might be.

But she knew better than to argue. Her parents had made up their minds, and that was that.

"When do I meet him?" Emily asked, resigned.

"Tomorrow night," her mother replied. "At the Thompson estate. Be ready by 7 pm."

Emily nodded, feeling like she was trapped in a nightmare. She couldn't believe this was happening to her.

As she left the room, Emily caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. She looked pale and shaken, her bright green eyes dull with worry.

She took a deep breath and tried to calm down. She would get through this, somehow. But as she walked away, she couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever.
