Helen continued tapping her fingers nervously along the glass table top as she sat leisurely waiting for her spouse, Wilson.
For the umpteenth time she had checked on her wristwatch, time was fast spent yet there was no sign of Wilson, and he wouldn't pick up his calls either. She sighed frustratingly.
She knew Wilson normally closed late from work every other day, but today was too extreme.
"Has he closed from work and perhaps has forgotten today is her birthday." She thought as the night was getting colder, and sitting here alone wasn't good as she could see the stares of the males in the restaurant.
She picked up her silver purse that was placed lazily on the table, twisted the shining metal at the top and it opened. She brought out a small red rosy box and pulled it open revealing a beautiful diamond ring. She stared at it while smiling faintly, she closed it and held it up to her chest.
"Babe, where are you? She murmured
Helen and Wilson had been dating for three years, Wilson had always told her he would make her officially his by marrying her, but he never made the move of proposing to her.
She had always been living with a delusion of what he told her and since he wasn't making the moves she decided to propose to him on her 22nd birthday instead.
He loves her so there's no way he would reject her he would be glad she did because she only made the work easier for him.
Helen had saved up her two months salary to make today happen and she won't let anything ruin it.
Tired of waiting, she stood up, picked up her purse, and placed the little box inside before heading out of the restaurant after paying for the drink she had taken.
It was getting too late already and today mustn't go by without her carrying out her mission.
Wilson had the resources to make her official and raise a family with her, but what's keeping him from doing so? That's the question she had no answer to.
She got to the road, hailed a cab, and settled inside.
"Granmax Enterprise." She said to the cab man.
"Okay, ma'am". The man responded and soon the car went into motion.
Helen closed her eyes with her head resting on the car headrest. She felt this strange sensation surging through her, she opened her eyes to look at the man but his focus was on the road.
She closed her eyes again but this time trying to block whatever that was giving her that odd feeling by thinking of how she would kneel with one leg and pop up the question. "WILL YOU MARRY ME WILSON." To him with the little romantic rhymes she had been practicing over the week, she couldn't wait to see that surprised look on his face, she was excited and somehow nervous.
After thirty minutes of driving, she arrived at her destination, paid the cab man, and stepped out. She stood staring at the huge building in front of her admiring it, this wasn't her first time here but today felt different, she felt like she was on top of the world.
She had the right to admire after all it is her man's company.
Wilson is the president of Granmax Enterprise. He is a wealthy man who only mingles with the elites, but somehow they both meet at a friend's party, Helen isn't from a wealthy family she's an orphan she has no idea what her mother looks like because she died when having her. While her father died in a plane crash when she was eight and ever since, her father's brother, her uncle, has been acting as her guardian. But then, living here was equivalent to living in hell.
They abused her to the point it was quite a miracle she had lived up to this age under their roof. Although her uncle has never laid a finger on her since he brought her into his household, he was greatly aware of what his wife and daughter used her for – a maid, a punching bag to pour out their frustration, and a money-milking tool.
However their relationship grew from neutral friends to lovers, Helen was damn too beautiful to be just a friend to him.
She entered into the company she met with the receptionist at the counter she waved at her while heading inside, but the lady at the counter had this strange look on her face like she had seen a ghost.
But due to how happy Helen was she care less. She got to the elevator and she pressed the button and it opened. She stepped in and queued for the 7th floor number and the elevator started descending. Soon she heard the ding sound of the elevator indicating she had arrived at the 7th floor.
She stepped out and headed towards his office humming to TONIGHT GONNA BE A GOOD NIGHT' by Black Eyed Peas.
Seeing the office lights were off, well not totally off but dimmed, Helen wondered if he was inside, she walked to the door and pushed it open and what greeted her made her brain go highwire.
"Ah! Baby there, hit it harder don't stop." Those were the sounds that welcomed her, did she enter into the wrong office? She wondered.
Because of how engrossed they were they didn't notice the figure standing by the door.
Helen stretched her hand to the light switch at the back of the door and flipped it on.
On seeing the lights turned on they both looked up abruptly, seeing who the intruder was, Wilson froze.
Helen felt different emotions run into her at once. Seeing her best friend and boss, Georgia lying on Wilson's desk with her legs raised above her head while the man she'd planned on proposing to was in between her legs plunging into her like a hungry lion.
The emotions she felt were: one disbelief, another was disbelief and the third was... massive disbelief. She was shattered.
"Ah!" She managed to say feebly
Her legs turned to that of a jelly at that instant and she staggered backward supporting herself with the door.
Who would have thought on her 22nd birthday she would be broken into a thousand pieces?
"Babe, this isn't what you think," Wilson said, pulling out of Georgia with the juice from her honey pot trailing down on the floor, gross, the sight of it made Helen go numb.
For the three years she had been with this man he never had intercourse with her, they could kiss and do other stuff, but he never entered her with the excuse of him wanting her to keep herself for their wedding night, but here he was giving it to another without care.
Even though she was a virgin she sometimes did have the urge of wanting to do it, but Wilson would always give her these silly excuses, now she understands better.
"What do you know that I am thinking?" She asked, feigning to be strong.
"I was...we were..., fuck." He cursed when he couldn't come up with any sane reason.
He bent down, grabbed his clothes on the floor, and put them hurriedly.
"Oh! Please Wilson just tell her the truth already." Georgia said, stepping down from the desk with her breasts dangling around.
"Stop it Georgia," Wilson yelled glaring at her.
Helen felt like melting into the ground, she needed to get away, but curiosity got the better of her and she found herself asking. "What truth is she talking about?"
"That Wilson and I have been dating for the past two years. News flash girl our wedding is coming up on the twentieth of next month. The dress code for the day is all white, we wanted it to be a surprise package, but since you're already here, let's just spill it." Georgia said grinning.
Wilson just stood with his eyes closed when he opened them he said, "Lenny I can explain."
At this time Helen didn't know she had been crying all along. She was broken beyond words.
She felt her throat run dry. Her chest was heaving hard, she tried to talk but no sound came out she turned and ran out crying profusely.
Wilson ran after her and caught up with her before she could get into the elevator since she was too weak and her legs weren't hers anymore.
Georgia ran after Wilson calling for him to return.
Helen turned to face them with her tears pouring down her cheeks like a broken dam and she said, "HAPPY 22nd BIRTHDAY TO ME WILSON."
Wilson gasps, he had forgotten about it. His legs got rooted on the spot on hearing her last statement he couldn't even utter a word he's such an asshole.
