Chapter 1 The Calm Before the Storm

Luna Hartley strolled through the busy marketplace of the Silver Moon Pack, humming gently to herself. The air was heavy with the smells of dirt, wildflowers, and freshly baked bread, which gave it a cosy familiarity. She enjoyed the gathering of pack members at this time of day to trade things and share stories. She could feel a strong sense of community, which always made her feel better.

Luna was walking towards her favourite flower stand when she saw Ivy Thorne, her closest friend, putting together a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers. When Ivy noticed Luna, her green eyes gleamed with mischief.

You're right on time, Luna! Ivy handed her a lovely arrangement of lavender and daisies and added, "I saved the best blooms for you."

"Ivy, thank you so much. Luna inhaled the pleasant aroma and answered, "They're gorgeous. How's business going today?

"As busy as ever," Ivy grinned. But enough about flowers. Is Ryder with you today?

The thought of Ryder Blackwood-the pack's recently anointed Alpha and her intended mate-made Luna's heart skip a beat. She hadn't seen him since the Moonlight Ceremony the night before, when he formally assumed the role of leader.

In an attempt to appear nonchalant, Luna said, "No, I haven't." "He's most likely preoccupied with pack issues."

Ivy arched an eyebrow, obviously picking up on Luna's attempt at smugness. Whether he's busy or not, he has to make time for his friend. This is especially important given the circulating rumors.

Luna's abdomen was constricted. What are the rumours?

Just hushed utterances about his goals. Some claim he has major plans. Something that may not be to everyone's taste," Ivy remarked, speaking more quietly.

Luna scowled. Ryder had always had a kind heart, but he was also quite determined and strong-willed. She was unable to see him doing anything detrimental to the group. Nevertheless, she could not shake the doubt.

Luna, don't be alarmed. Ryder loves you. Ivy smiled comfortingly at her and added, "I'm sure he'll tell you when the time is perfect, whatever he's planned.

Luna nodded, but the discomfort persisted. She kept thinking about Ryder and the rumours about his intentions as she walked through the marketplace.

Luna arrived at the Alpha's home later that day, her pulse racing with excitement. Surrounded by paperwork and maps, she discovered Ryder in his study. His black hair was a little untidy, and his sharp blue eyes were fixed on a map that was in front of him.

"Ryder?" Softly, Luna called from the doorway.

His frown softened as he glanced up and spotted her. Come in, Luna.

With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, she approached him. "You've been missed."

Ryder pulled her into his arms and murmured, "I've missed you too." For a brief time, all her anxieties vanished as he gave her a gentle kiss.

However, the moment was short. Ryder withdrew and let out a sigh. "Luna, we need to talk about something."

Her heart fell. "What's that?"

"Changes are on the way. significant adjustments. With a serious tone, he said, "I've been working on plans to strengthen our pack to ensure our future."

Luna scowled. "What kind of modifications?"

With hesitation, Ryder scanned her gaze. "I can't talk specifics just now. Luna, just have faith in me. My actions are all directed towards the benefit of the group.

It was frustrating because she wanted to trust him but wasn't sure. "Ryder, why are you keeping it from me if it's so important?"

"It's intricate," he said while stroking his hair. "There are things you don't know that, if you knew too much, could endanger you."

Luna was filled with a sudden annoyance. "Ryder, I'm your friend. I should not be kept in the dark, but at your side.

With a forceful voice, Ryder said, "I'm doing this to protect you." "Please, Luna. Simply have faith in me.

She was about to dispute and ask for clarification, but the expression in his eyes silenced her. There was a cry for understanding, a desperation. She reluctantly gave a nod. Alright. I'll have faith in you.

Ryder's shoulders went a little easier. "I'm grateful. I assure you that everything will soon make sense.

Luna had a racing mind as she exited the mansion. Although she was in love with Ryder, the rumours and the secrecy worried her. She was plagued by a persistent sense that something was really off.

The group seemed to get more tense over the next several days. Dissenting and uneasy rumours sprang up like wildfire. Luna made an effort to concentrate on her tasks, but the persistent concern tore at her.

Luna decided to ask her parents for guidance one evening. She hoped they might provide some clarity, as they had always been her rock. With her heart heaving with doubt, she traveled to their cabin outside the pack's domain.

The cottage was deserted when she got there. Anxiety swept through her. At this hour, her parents were usually home. She called their names and looked around, but she couldn't find them.

Luna, in a desperate attempt to locate someone who had seen her parents, rushed to the pack's meeting hall. There was a chilly hush as she blasted through the doors. With the exception of one person standing in the shadow, the hall was deserted.

Ryder moved forward, his face serious. "We need to talk, Luna."

Her heart throbbed in her chest. "Ryder, where are my parents?"

He said, "They're safe," but there was more to it than that. However, there is something you should be aware of.

Luna was struggling to breathe. Ryder, what's going on? Why won't anybody be honest with me?

As if bracing himself for what he was about to say, he inhaled deeply. "There's a danger to the pack, Luna. There is a rival group trying to overthrow us. I had to make a few tough choices in order to keep everyone safe.

She tried to digest his words as her thoughts raced. "How is that related to my parents?"

Ryder gritted his teeth and glanced away. "They're gone now. as a means of leverage. I'm making every effort to win them back.

Luna's universe whirled. Ryder hadn't told her that her parents were in danger. "What kept you from telling me sooner?"

With sadness in his voice, he continued, "I didn't want to put you in danger." "I believed I could manage it by myself."

Luna's eyes filled with tears. "We're meant to be partners, Ryder. I can't be ignored by you.

Reaching for her, he said, "I know." "Luna, I apologise. All I wanted to do was keep you safe.

She withdrew, her feelings tumultuous. "I have to locate my parents."

"We shall," Ryder murmured, his eyes brimming with resolve. But we must exercise caution. The pack's security is the first priority.

Luna nodded, worry and uncertainty weighing heavily on her heart. As she turned to go, Ryder's words halted her.

"One more thing," he remarked in a solemn tone. The opposing group has goals beyond chasing the pack. They are also pursuing you.

Luna felt her blood chill. "Why me?"

Ryder looked at her, a mixture of resolution and grief in his eyes. "Because you underestimate your power." They'll stop at nothing in order to be near you.

As she thought about what he had said, Luna had a cold realization. The battle for her family and her pack was just getting started, and the threat was closer than she had ever thought.

Finally, the storm that had been building burst, putting Luna on the brink of a conflict that would put her love, strength, and destiny to the test.

The door blew open behind Luna as she stood in the empty conference room, Ryder's words weighing on her like a dense mist. As she spun around and saw a dark man standing at the doorway, her heart sprang into her throat. Luna was shocked to see the last person she had anticipated seeing.

The person responded, "Hello, Luna," a chilly grin flickering on their lips. "We need to talk."

When Luna saw the face of her biggest horror, her blood frozen.

And what she had believed to be true was suddenly disproved.
