I fell off a cliff and lost my memory. When I woke up, all I knew was that I was a general and had a fiancé. When the people sent by the court stood in front of me, I was immediately attracted to one of them. But the vice general pointed to someone else and said that he was my future husband. I couldn't believe it and thought I must have been crazy to like him. The prince laughed and the crown prince looked upset, warning me not to regret my decision. I didn't regret it at the time, but later on, I realized that I should have. Unfortunately, I was no longer the girl who was completely devoted to him.

Chapter 1

A flash of silver glinted as I brought the knife down, chopping the pork into evenly sized pieces. The soldiers were ecstatic to finally have some meat to eat. Just as I was about to show off another knife trick, I heard Darin calling from a distance.

"My dear General, why are you still here? The court's envoys have arrived."

He grabbed my arm and started pulling me along. "Hey, hey, hey, the knife..."

The quick-witted chef swiftly took the knife from my hand.

When we finally reached my main tent, Darin pushed me inside. "Hurry up and change into your impressive armor. The second half of the year's military pay depends on you, General!"

I couldn't help but shake my head. Darin was always so impatient. So what if people from Aresmore had arrived? What was the rush?

Perhaps sensing my indifference, Darin raised his voice. "General, your future husband is here too!"

What! I quickly changed into my armor and rushed out the door, muttering complaints about Darin not mentioning this sooner.

When I arrived, the first person I saw was the man at the forefront. Tall and handsome, he had to be my betrothed. I nodded in satisfaction, but then two people approached me, and the man spoke with disdain.

"Mabel, why would a proper lady like you come to Limont? You don't behave like a noblewoman at all."

The woman in his arms covered her nose. "Ugh, what a memorable smell."

I sniffed carefully. It was just the smell of raw meat. What was so bad about that? If she ever had to smell the blood on a battlefield, then she'd know what a bad smell was.

"Excuse me, who are you? Do we know each other well? If not, watch your mouth, or I'll have my men throw you out."

The two of them were furious, but I couldn't be bothered to deal with them. Bringing a mistress to the battlefield was just ridiculous.

I pushed past them and hurried towards my betrothed.

"Was the journey hard on you?" I asked.

Hearing my words, the man turned around, and I was even more taken aback. Wow, he was really handsome. Not bad at all.

The man glanced at the two fools from before, his voice puzzled. "Are you talking to me?"

Who else would I be talking to?

Seeing my exasperated expression, my betrothed laughed. "It's been a while, Mabel. You've changed quite a bit."

Darin had said the same thing, thinking I was different from the me before I lost my memory. But who cared? Whether I was the same or not, I was still me.

I grabbed my betrothed's hand enthusiastically. "Come, come, come. I'll personally show you to your quarters. You can stay in the tent next to mine."

He raised an eyebrow and smiled meaningfully but didn't refuse.

As we walked past the two fools, I vaguely heard the man calling my name. No matter, I just pretended not to hear.

When we reached the lodging, I explained how I had fallen off a cliff while chasing the enemy half a month ago and lost my memory when I woke up.

My betrothed looked even more surprised, with a hint of sudden realization. "Mabel, do you think your fiancé is me?"

"Isn't it?" I asked in return.

He shook his head. "Yes."

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
