Chapter 1 ~ Prologue ~

"I won't sign these papers! Not after everything you've done. You won't have your way with this. NO-not this time!" Her gaze, fierce and full of fury, locked onto his blue eyes.

If there's a word to describe what she felt now...'Regret'. She regrets going to bed with images of him in mind, regrets waking up an hour early to catch a ride with him for school even thou there was no other reason to, regrets holding hands during their night walk, interwinding fingers and sharing the warmth from each other's palm during the cold winters. More importantly, Sophia regrets saying 'yes' to him that day, that beautiful day still lures in her memory.

The sunset spread its magnificent ambience round the city showing the most eye-catching view. She would never forget his blue eyes looking down at hers with so much passion and love that gave her a thousand butterflies. His dark brown hair swaying gracefully amidst the slow dusk breeze added to his elegance, something Sophia couldn't resist staring for a million times. The white shirt he had on that day was the birthday present she got for him on his twenty first birthday in college. It matched perfectly with the black summer jacket and jeans.

Her heart skipped the beat numerous times that day. 'He's saying it. He's finally asking me out!' she scowled at her pathetic self, giggling at the lies, what was believed to be a fairytale never became reality. 'Wu', a name feared and envied by many has become a thing she now hate with all her heart.

The Wu family was synonymous with power and influence in C-city. Their name was whispered with reverence in boardrooms and social circles alike. Each of the three Wu brothers was a prize catch, a golden trophy coveted by countless women. Kain, the eldest, had secured his place as the Head of Wu Construction, his marriage to the daughter of the Chen industry's chairman a testament to his business acumen and social standing. Five years into their union, the couple had become parents to adorable twins, further solidifying their position as the power couple of the city.

Kevin, the middle son, is a heartthrob with a face that could launch a thousand ships. As the Vice CEO of Wu Hotels, he was heir to a luxury empire, his good looks and charm a constant subject of gossip columns. Despite his enviable position, Kevin remained single, unmoved by the matchmaking efforts of his family. Some whispered he was too focused on his career, while others speculated about his rumored aversion to commitment.

Then there was Charles Wu, the youngest brother, known as the 'Mystery Prince'. Being one of the charming guys back in school, his charisma and quiet confidence captivated many hearts and the attention of his lecturers because of his excellent academic performance. Even after graduating with a degree in business, Charles Wu exuded an aura of quiet power, his appointment as CFO of Wu Department Stores, while still pursuing his master's program attests to his sharp mind and business acumen. His marriage to the beautiful daughter of the Chairman of SZ Industries was a grand affair, celebrated as the ultimate love story.

Sophia Zhang, a beautiful and delicate woman, had been in love with Charles since their school days. She had patiently waited for him, ignoring the advances of other suitors, her heart set on her 'Prince charming'. Their wedding was the talk of the town, a fairytale union of two prominent families.

But unbeknownst to Sophia, this grand spectacle was just a carefully crafted facade. Behind the public display of love and happiness, a different story was unfolding, one that would shatter Sophia's world. The truth was, this wasn't a love story at all, but a calculated betrayal, a cruel twist of fate that left Sophia heartbroken and filled with a rage she couldn't ignore.

My world revolved around Jax Harding, my older brother's captivating rockstar friend. From sixteen, I adored him; at eighteen, I clung to his casual promise: "When you're 22, maybe I'll settle down." That offhand comment became my life's beacon, guiding every choice, meticulously planning my twenty-second birthday as our destiny. But on that pivotal day in a Lower East Side bar, clutching my gift, my dream exploded. I overheard Jax' s cold voice: "Can't believe Savvy's showing up. She' s still hung up on that stupid thing I said." Then the crushing plot: "We' re gonna tell Savvy I' m engaged to Chloe, maybe even hint she' s pregnant. That should scare her off." My gift, my future, slipped from my numb fingers. I fled into the cold New York rain, devastated by betrayal. Later, Jax introduced Chloe as his "fiancée" while his bandmates mocked my "adorable crush"-he did nothing. As an art installation fell, he saved Chloe, abandoning me to severe injury. In the hospital, he came for "damage control," then shockingly shoved me into a fountain, leaving me to bleed, calling me a "jealous psycho." How could the man I loved, who once saved me, become this cruel and publicly humiliate me? Why was my devotion seen as an annoyance to be brutally extinguished with lies and assault? Was I just a problem, my loyalty met with hatred? I would not be his victim. Injured and betrayed, I made an unshakeable vow: I was done. I blocked his number and everyone connected to him, severing ties. This was not an escape; this was my rebirth. Florence awaited, a new life on my terms, unburdened by broken promises.
