Chapter 1 Borrow

The Luxury Emperor's ballroom, nestled on the opulent Mckinely Street in A City, was a beacon for the elite. This grand venue, renowned for its splendor, regularly hosted the city's affluent society.

Blair sat quietly in a secluded corner on the second floor, her gaze drifting over the prestigious assembly below. Her lips curled into a self-deprecating smile as she observed the grandeur around her.

The ballroom, an expansive hall capable of accommodating over a thousand guests, was suffused with melodious music that gently filled the air. The ambiance was one of sophistication and celebration.

Periodically, the entrance would burst into cheers as distinguished celebrities and honored guests made their way into the room. Each arrival was met with enthusiastic applause, reflecting their esteemed status within the social hierarchy.

High above, the spotlights created a dazzling display, their beams dancing in sync with the fervent reception of the crowd.

Blair remained detached, her expression unchanged as she watched the evening's festivities unfold. Her disinterest wavered, however, when she saw him enter.

Clad in a dark brown tuxedo, he commanded attention with his tall, elegant frame. Appearing to be in his late twenties, his chiseled features and porcelain skin gleamed under the bright lights, emanating an aura of effortless sophistication and luxury.

As all eyes gravitated towards him, he effortlessly captured the spotlight, radiating warmth and brilliance akin to the sun itself. His companion, equally captivating, adorned herself in a stunning scarlet evening gown, exuding grace and allure with every step.

"Young Master Jake and Miss Mendra!" a voice exclaimed, breaking the spell of awe that had enveloped the crowd. Instantly, they surged forward, eager to greet the esteemed couple and offer their well-wishes.

For Blair, this moment marked the culmination of her anticipation. The figure she had been waiting for had finally made his entrance.

Meanwhile, amidst the ongoing conversations and toasts below, a sudden interruption echoed from above. All heads turned towards the staircase leading to the second floor as the door swung open, revealing a new arrival.

Descending with ethereal grace, a lady caught everyone's attention. Her complexion resembled the smoothness of jade, framed by sleek black hair elegantly pulled back to reveal the graceful curve of her neck. Clad in a simple yet mesmerizing aqua gown, she stood out like a celestial being amidst mortals, her beauty unparalleled.

"Who is that lady? murmured voices in the crowd, captivated by her otherworldly presence. Never before had A City seen such a captivating figure.

"Blair Dust!" the revelation rippled through the gathering, adding yet another layer of intrigue to the unfolding spectacle.

The origin of the voice remained shrouded in mystery, casting a veil of intrigue over the gathering crowd. Whispers fluttered among them, carrying fragments of speculation. Could it be Blair? Did she still bear the prestigious Dust lineage?

"Blair, the ultimate grandkid of Grandpa Dust," the voice continued, punctuating the air with uncertainty. "But the Dust fam's once epic influence totally crumbled due to bankruptcy. And Grandpa Dust, stuck in the hospital, is on the brink of fragility. So like, how's Blair even showing up to this shindig?" Confusion danced upon the faces of onlookers, mingling with a tinge of curiosity.

"Maybe she's trying to reclaim their lost status by showing up at this event?"" speculated another voice, weaving a thread of suspicion into the fabric of the conversation.

Amidst the murmurs and conjectures, Blair strode forth with a graceful poise, her presence commanding attention. She effortlessly plucked two glasses of crimson wine from the passing waiter's tray as she made her way toward Jake Band, the epitome of composed elegance.

"A toast, Jake," she offered, a smile gracing her lips as she extended a glass towards him, the glint of determination shimmering in her eyes.

Had circumstances been different, had their paths crossed under alternate skies, Blair might not have deigned to grace this occasion with her presence. Yet here she stood, resolute in her resolve.

In the depths of Jake's gaze, a subtle shift betrayed his surprise. Never before had he beheld Blair adorned in such opulent attire, her demeanor a captivating blend of sophistication and enigma.

Once a figure of quiet anonymity, Blair had often faded into the background, her presence melding seamlessly with the throng of ordinary faces. But today, a transformation had occurred, leaving onlookers in awe of her newfound elegance and grace.

Caught in the riptide of his astonishment, Jake's gaze lingered upon her, his mind reeling with disbelief at the sight before him. Mendra Den, his steadfast companion, sensed his bewilderment and gently nudged him back to reality with a soft call of his name, "Jake?"

With a subtle nod, Jake acknowledged Mendra's presence, silently appreciating her unspoken support. Turning his attention back to Blair, he accepted the proffered glass of wine, the cool surface a stark contrast to the warmth of the moment.

Sensing the need for discretion, Mendra gracefully withdrew, granting Jake a modicum of privacy amidst the bustling gathering.

As Blair leaned in, her voice a delicate whisper against the backdrop of the soirée, she unveiled a proposition laden with urgency and necessity. "Jake," she murmured, her words carrying the weight of her predicament, "If you want to keep our failed engagement under wraps, could you lend me $600,000?"

For Blair, the sum held a significance far beyond its monetary value. It was the cost of her grandfather's surgery, a lifeline tethered to the crumbling remnants of the Dust family's fortune. In this unforgiving society, she had learned that compassion often came with a price tag, and in her desperation, she turned to Jake as a last resort, a reluctant plea born of circumstance and necessity.
